Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the literature of this vast and compelling subject, A. B. Bruce’s great book, The Humiliation of Christ stands alone and apart. Spoken of as having “won for himself the foremost place among Christian apologists” in the nineteenth century. A. B. Bruce crowned his New Testament studies (which included such famous books as The Training of the Twelve, and St. Paul’s Conception of Christianity, etc.) with this brilliantly impressive study of a subject which he especially was equipped to write. Here Bruce employs the teaching of Scripture, as it deepens and sharpens our perceptions of the sufferings of our Lord, to form dynamic as well as correct views of Christ’s person experience, and work; and having complete grasp of the relevant literature, ancient, modern, and that of his own contemporaries, he acts as a reliable and sure guide in the criticism of the various theories of Christ as Lord and Redeemer. A book every advanced student of the New Testament will cherish.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Humiliation of Christ: In Its Physical, Ethical and Official Aspects IN issuing a new edition of T he Humiliation of Christ, I desire gratefully to acknowledge the appreciative spirit in which a very imperfect attempt to discuss a difficult subject of great importance was received by the theological public. In this edition scarcely any alteration has been made in the text of the Lectures which appeared in the first edition But a new Lecture has been added, the Fifth in the present volume, on Modern Humanistic T nearies of C nrist's Person, which completes my original design. In this Lecture I have utilized the notes which appeared in the Appendix of the former edition on tile [deal-man T/teory of Cnrist's Person, and on t/ze title Son of man, replacing them by new notes on other topics. I have also in the same Lec ture embodied the substance of an article on Naturalistic Views of Cnrist's Person, which appeared in the British ana' Foreign Evangelical Review for January 1879. For the benefit of readers not familiar with the Greek and German languages I have given English translations of extracts from these tongues occurring in the Appendix, alpng with the original. I have not thought it necessary to follow the same course with extracts in notes at the foot of the page in the body of the work, because the drift of all such ex tracts is given in the text, so that the English reader loses nothing, except the power of verifying the accuracy of my representations. It was simply for the purpose of such verification that the extracts were given. I trust thatthese additions will have the effect of rendering the book more useful and acceptable. Ifl have not made more ex tensive alterations, it is not for want of a deep sense of the defects of my performance. If there are passages in the volume which do not satisfy the mind of the reader, they probably still less satisfy the mind of the writer. And yet I am not sure that if I were to try I could make them bet ter. Let me express the hope that, in spite of defects, these studies may promote growth in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, and by their very short comings stir up others to handle the high theme more worthily. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the studies of Karl Barth's thought, no other work covers, as this one does, the areas of political, doctrinal, and ecumenical theology in single compass. Written by a leading Barth scholar, Disruptive Grace is unique not only for its range of study, depth of insight, and accuracy of presentation, but also for the way it displays the heart as well as the mind of the great Swiss pastor and theologian. Each of the book's three main sections consists of five major essays. Part 1 relates Barth to contemporary issues of social justice, war, and peace. Part 2 covers christology, pneumatology, the Trinity, scriptural interpretation, and the question of universal salvation. Part 3 discusses the Reformed tradition as Barth understood it in relation to Roman Catholicism, Lutheranism, modern liberalism, evangelical conservatism, and the postliberal theology of the contemporary Yale school. The book concludes with a meditation on the saving significance of Christ's death, a theme that runs throughout the book. The result of more than twenty-five years of intensive Barth research, this volume provides scholars, teachers, and students with a thorough discussion of the twentieth century's most significant Christian thinker.

Book Bowing before Christ Nodding to the State

Download or read book Bowing before Christ Nodding to the State written by Dorothea H. Bertschmann and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2014-07-31 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Does the apostle Paul sponsor political conservatism? A growing number of scholars dispute this perception, arguing that Paul's political imagery and in particular the confession that "Jesus Christ is Lord" directly challenge the proud Roman emperor. This book critically engages these proposals, seeking to point out with greater precision the function of political imagery within the Pauline narrative. Dorothea H. Bertschmann starts by conversing with the works of John Howard Yoder and Oliver O'Donovan, two modern political ethicists and theologians. She argues that both thinkers in all their distinctive emphases wrestle with a similar difficulty: How can Christ the Lord be meaningfully related to earthly lords without betraying the otherness of Christ's Lordship? But how does Paul deal with this problem? In order to answer this question Bertschmann offers a close reading of two key texts, Philippians 2:5-11 and Romans 13:1-7.She argues that despite the many-faceted political imagery of the "Christ hymn", Paul does nothing in his explicit narrative to engage existing rulers positively or negatively with the message of Christ's rule.Paul's focus is entirely on the church, which he seeks to construct as a "community under authority". While there is no emperor in the Christ hymn, there is no Christ in Paul's political admonition of Romans 13.Paul deliberately keeps political rule at the periphery of God's salvific actions in Christ, while not totally dis-connecting it from the overall divine act. This strategy has its limitations, but also the potential to offer fresh impulses in theological deliberations about "church and state".
