Book Sustainable Development Goals and Human Rights

Download or read book Sustainable Development Goals and Human Rights written by Markus Kaltenborn and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-01-01 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book analyses the interplay of sustainable development and human rights from different perspectives including fight against poverty, health, gender equality, working conditions, climate change and the role of private actors. Each aspect is addressed from a more human rights-focused angle and a development-policy angle. This allows comparisons between the different approaches but also seeks to close gaps which would remain if only one perspective would be at the center of the discussions. Specifically, the book shows the strong connections between human rights and the objectives of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals adopted by the United Nations in 2015. Already the preamble of this document explicitly states that "the 17 Sustainable Development Goals ... seek to realise the human rights of all". Moreover, several goals and targets of the 2030 Agenda correspond to already existing individual human rights obligations. The contributions of this volume therefore also address how the implementation of human rights and SDGs can reinforce each other, but also point to critical shortcomings of the different approaches.

Download or read book Implementing Human Rights and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development at the Local Level written by Karina Gomes and published by . This book was released on 2020-01-22 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first volume in the publication series "Human Rights Go Local". This series will allow established researchers, new voices, and practitioners to contribute to the debate on the interlinkages between human rights and global policy frameworks, such as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and the New Urban Agenda. In addition, the publication series will showcase how these very interlinkages can guide us towards creating inclusive, resilient, safe, and sustainable urban spaces and regions. The contributions to this publication series are targeted to all stakeholders at the local and regional levels: municipal administrations and regional governments; local authorities and service-providers; city coalitions; scholars and activists; and everyone seeking to understand, evaluate, discuss, and engage in fostering human rights and sustainable development at the local and regional levels. This book discusses three fundamental questions: -What are the interlinkages between human rights and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and what practical implications does this relationship have for the local level? -How do local level authorities, such as Human Rights Cities, (concurrently) implement human rights and the Sustainable Development Goals in practice? -Which governance levels are practically involved in the implementation of human rights and the international development agenda at the local level and how do they interact and influence each other? The publication series is jointly edited by the UNESCO Centre for the Promotion of Human Rights at the Local and Regional Levels (Graz, Austria) and the UNESCO Chair in Human Rights and Human Security at the University of Graz.

Book Leave No One Behind

Download or read book Leave No One Behind written by Homi Kharas and published by Brookings Institution Press. This book was released on 2019-10-29 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ambitious 15-year agenda known as the Sustainable Development Goals, adopted in 2015 by all members of the United Nations, contains a pledge that “no one will be left behind.” This book aims to translate that bold global commitment into an action-oriented mindset, focused on supporting specific people in specific places who are facing specific problems. In this volume, experts from Japan, the United States, Canada, and other countries address a range of challenges faced by people across the globe, including women and girls, smallholder farmers, migrants, and those living in extreme poverty. These are many of the people whose lives are at the heart of the aspirations embedded in the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. They are the people most in need of such essentials as health care, quality education, decent work, affordable energy, and a clean environment. This book is the result of a collaboration between the Japan International Cooperation Research Institute and the Global Economy and Development program at Brookings. It offers practical ideas for transforming “leave no one behind” from a slogan into effective actions which, if implemented, will make it possible to reach the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. In addition to policymakers in the field of sustainable development, this book will be of interest to academics, activists, and leaders of international organizations and civil society groups who work every day to promote inclusive economic and social progress.

Book The Sustainable Development Goals and Human Rights

Download or read book The Sustainable Development Goals and Human Rights written by Inga Winkler and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-07 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were adopted in 2015. The SDGs make the central promise to Leave No One Behind and include a dedicated goal to reduce inequalities. Human rights advocates have put great hopes in the SDGs as an instrument for transformative change. But do they bring about the much-needed paradigm shift? Or were the extensive consultations and negotiations much ado about nothing? "Sustainable Development Goals and Human Rights: A Critical Early Review" follows two central lines of inquiry. The chapters examine to what extent do the SDGs live up to the promise to reduce inequalities and provide for monitoring and policies that address the needs of marginalized and invisible populations. They further suggest transparent and binding accountability processes and mechanisms to ensure that the SDGs are more than lofty goals and bring power to their promise. The volume begins with three chapters that focus on different aspects of SDG 10 and the commitment to reduce inequalities. From this cross cutting SDG, the following three chapters look at the translation of equality and accountability into specific sectors: health (SDG 3) and labour (SDG 8). The chapters were originally published in a special issue of The International Journal of Human Rights.

Book Integrated Review and Reporting on SDGS and Human Rights

Download or read book Integrated Review and Reporting on SDGS and Human Rights written by and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human rights and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development are inextricably linked. The 2030 Agenda is explicitly grounded in international human rights. The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) "seek to realize the human rights of all", and more than 90% of the targets directly reflect elements of international human rights and labour standards. The pledge to "leave no one behind" mirrors the fundamental human rights principles of non-discrimination and equality. The potential to bridge the accountability and implementation gap through aligning SDG and human rights reporting and follow-up offers itself to SDG and human rights reporting and follow-up at national as well as regional and international levels. SDG and human rights reporting is done by a broad range of actors including governments, civil society organisations, NHRIs and others. This Guidance Note therefore explores different ways in which human rights recommendations - found through the SDG - Human Rights Data Explorer - can be used in different processes and at different levels in order to pursue a human rights-based approach to sustainable development.
