Book Human Rights and Good Governance

Download or read book Human Rights and Good Governance written by Hans-Otto Sano and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-08-04 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, the result of an ongoing Nordic research project undertaken under the auspices of the Danish Centre for Human Rights in Copenhagen and the Raoul Wallenberg Institute for Human Rights and Humanitarian Law in Lund, examines the relationship and possible interaction between good governance and human rights. The contributors consist of academics and professionals with backgrounds in development studies, economics, law, political science, and sociology. Together they demonstrate the need for interdisciplinary dialogue and clarification of concepts, contents, and processes of realisation. While good governance is mainly pursued in a development context, it is a central message of the book that good governance guidelines ought to have universal applicability, affecting international organisations and public and private actors in Northern as well as Southern countries. Yet an established consensus does not exist on how good governance and human rights can or should complement each other. The book therefore assesses the advantages of using existing links and identifies ways of building new bridges for mutual support between governance and human rights. The authors examine their topics on the basis of theory, best practices, law, the experiences of societies undergoing democratic transition, and other empirical evidence, without attempting to come up with a common definition of good governance. The plurality of interpretations will hopefully further strengthen good governance and human rights as integral elements of a global agenda.

Book Human Rights and Good Governance

Download or read book Human Rights and Good Governance written by Wei Zhang and published by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers. This book was released on 2016-03-11 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Chinese Perspectives on Human Rights and Good Governance series reviews various aspects of human rights and good governance in China, including international human rights standards, specific substantive rights protection and rule of law, as well as constitutionalism, especially in the context of contemporary China. Its aim is to stimulate discussion on these and related topics, with a focus on international standards whenever these are applicable and relevant to China. In this first volume in the series, the contributors adopt different disciplinary approaches to look at China both in the context of its internal constraints and as a global player in the overall development of human rights. Where is China headed in the near future? Does Chinese culture stand in contradiction to human rights? Is the rule of law alien to Chinese society? Can China move ahead without political reforms? In this thought-provoking volume, leading Chinese and Western scholars offer analysis of these issues, also with reference to Chinese history and contemporary culture.

  • ISBN : 1589017315
  • Pages : 201 pages

Download or read book Building a Better Bridge written by Michael Ipgrave and published by Georgetown University Press. This book was released on 2008-11-10 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Building a Better Bridge is a record of the fourth "Building Bridges" seminar held in Sarajevo in 2005 as part of an annual symposium on Muslim-Christian relations cosponsored by Georgetown University and the Archbishop of Canterbury. This volume presents the texts of the public lectures with regional presentations on issues of citizenship, religious believing and belonging, and the relationship between government and religion—both from the immediate situation in Bosnia-Herzegovina and from three contexts further afield: Britain, Malaysia, and West Africa. Both Christian and Muslim scholars propose key questions to be faced in addressing the issue of the common good. How do we approach the civic sphere as believers in particular faiths and as citizens of mixed societies? What makes us who we are, and how do our religious and secular allegiances relate to one another? How do we accommodate our commitment to religious values with acknowledgment of human disagreement, and how can this be expressed in models of governance and justice? How are we, mandated by scriptures to be caretakers, to respond to the current ecological and economic disorder of our world? Michael Ipgrave and his contributors do not claim to provide definitive answers to these questions, but rather they further a necessary dialogue and show that, while Christian and Islamic understandings of God may differ sharply and perhaps irreducibly, the acknowledgment of one another as people of faith is the surest ground on which to build trust, friendship, and cooperation.

Book National Human Rights Institutions in the Asia Pacific Region

Download or read book National Human Rights Institutions in the Asia Pacific Region written by Brian Burdekin and published by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers. This book was released on 2007 with total page 573 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to provide a consolidated collection of materials to facilitate comparison of the various national human rights institutions (NHRIs) already established in the Asia-Pacific region, against a background of selected international materials and with the assistance of several comparative tables. The latter are not intended to be exhaustive, but are designed to assist in identifying and considering the strengths and weaknesses inherent in the legislative mandates of each national institution. While the collection is primarily intended for teaching purposes, it should also be useful to countries considering establishing a national human rights commission or, for those which have already done so, strengthening its mandate. For this reason several sections have been included outlining the relationship which should exist between NHRIs, the Executive, the Legislature, the Judiciary and other related institutions and a short section on the importance of the process which should precede their establishment.

Book Human Rights Indicators in Development

Download or read book Human Rights Indicators in Development written by Siobhan McInerney-Lankford and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2010-10-26 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human rights indicators are central to the application of human rights standards in context and relate essentially to measuring human rights realization, both qualitatively and quantitatively. They offer an empirical or evidence-based dimension to the normative content of human rights legal obligations and a provide means of connecting those obligations with empirical data and evidence, and in this way relate to human rights accountability and the enforcement of human rights obligations. Human rights indicators are important both for assessment and diagnostic purposes: the assessment function of human rights indicators relates to their use in monitoring accountability, effectiveness and impact, while the diagnostic purposes relates to measuring the current state of human rights implementation and enjoyment in a given context, whether regional, country-specific or local. This paper offers a preliminary review of the foregoing in the development context, and a general perspective on the significance of human rights indicators for development processes and outcomes. It is not intended to be prescriptive and does not provide specific operational recommendations on the use of human rights indicators in development projects. Nor does it advocate a particular approach or mode of integrating human rights in development, or argue for a rights-based approach to development. This paper is designed to provide development practitioners with a preliminary view on the possible relevance, design and use of human rights indicators in development policy and practice. It also introduces a basic conceptual framework about the relationship between rights and development, including in the World Bank context and surveys a range of methodological approaches on human rights measurement, exploring in general terms different types of human rights indicators and their potential implications for development at three different levels of convergence or integration.

Book The Inspection Panel of the World Bank

Download or read book The Inspection Panel of the World Bank written by Gudmundur Alfredsson and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2022-07-11 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the adoption of extensive human rights standards and their wide acceptance by States and the international community, the time has come to emphasise the implementation of these standards at both national and international levels. International financial institutions and development agencies have a special role to play in this respect, considering the influence and the resources at their disposal. Increasingly, they are acknowledging this duty, not only as a service to human rights but more so in recognition of the contribution which human rights and democracy, and so by extension good governance and accountability, make to political stability and improved economies. This volume is the result of a Workshop on the Inspection Panel which was organised in Lund by the Raoul Wallenberg Institute of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law and co-sponsored by the World Bank. Its purpose is to look for common ground in areas of mutual interest and to offer a substantive collection of ideas which can prove useful for the future work of the Inspection Panel and similar institutions. Such undertakings must include human rights education and training for the officialdom of national governments and international organisations, as well as for the individuals and groups who stand to benefit from the implementation of the international standards and monitoring exercises, where independent and impartial experts scrutinise the conduct of national and international actors.

Book Principles of International Economic Law

Download or read book Principles of International Economic Law written by Matthias Herdegen and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-09-29 with total page 625 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Principles of International Economic Law provides a comprehensive overview of the central topics in international economic law, with an emphasis on the interplay between the different economic and political interests on both the international and domestic levels. Following recent tendencies, the book sets the classic topics of international economic law, like WTO law, investment protection, commercial law and monetary law in context with aspects of human rights, environmental protection and the legitimate claims of developing countries. The book draws a concise picture of the architecture of international economic law with all its complexities, without getting lost in fragmented details. Providing a perfect introductory text to the field of international economic law, the book thoroughly analyses legal developments within their wider political, economic, or social context. Topics covered range from codes of conduct for multinational enterprises, to the human rights implications of the exploitation of natural resources. The book demonstrates the economic foundations and economic implications of legal frameworks. It puts into profile the often complex relationship between, on the one hand, international standards on liberalization and economic rationality and, on the other, state sovereignty and national preferences. It describes the new forms of economic cooperation which have developed in recent decades, such as the growing number of transnational companies in the private sector, and forms of cooperation between states such as the G8 or G20. This fully updated second edition covers new aspects and developments including the growing importance of corporate social responsibility, mega-regional-agreements like CETA, TTIP, and TPP, trade and investment related aspects of human rights law.

Book Constitutional Law Democracy and Development

Download or read book Constitutional Law Democracy and Development written by Douglas Karekona Singiza and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-02-21 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Uganda, like many African countries in the 1990s, adopted decentralisation as a state reform measure after many years of civil strife and political conflicts, by transferring powers and functions to district councils. The decision to transfer powers and functions to district councils was, in the main, linked to the quest for democracy and development within the broader context of the nation state. This book’s broader aim is to examine whether the legal and policy framework of decentralisation produces a system of governance that better serves the greater objectives of local democracy, local development and accommodation of ethnicity. Specifically, the book pursues one main aim: to examine whether indeed the existing legal framework ensures the smooth devolution process that is needed for decentralised governance to succeed. In so doing, the book seeks, overall, to offer lessons that are critically important not only for Uganda but any other developing nation that has adopted decentralisation as a state-restructuring strategy. The book uses a desk-top research method by reviewing Uganda’s decentralisation legal and policy frameworks.

Book Breaking Chains Building Bridges

Download or read book Breaking Chains Building Bridges written by S Scott Jr and published by S Scott Jr. This book was released on 2023-11-15 with total page 69 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In our shared human journey, the echoes of oppression reverberate through the annals of history. From systemic inequalities to the suppression of cultural expressions and the marginalization of entire communities, oppressive systems have left indelible marks on the fabric of our societies. These wounds run deep, compromising the well-being and potential of individuals and fracturing the very foundations of justice and equality. As we stand at the precipice of change, it becomes evident that healing from oppression is not only a moral imperative but also a necessary step towards realizing a world where every human being can thrive. This book, "Breaking Chains, Building Bridges: A Holistic Vision for Healing from Oppression," is a call to action, an invitation to embark on a transformative journey that transcends mere resistance and offers a roadmap for healing the wounds inflicted by various forms of oppression. Understanding that oppression is a multidimensional force, we embark on this journey by exploring its intricate facets: racial, gender, economic, spiritual, cultural, and governmental. Each form of oppression interweaves, reinforcing and perpetuating the others, creating complex webs that shackle individuals and communities. Yet, in acknowledging and dissecting these oppressive structures, we uncover the path towards liberation. Equipped with knowledge and empathy, we begin to reimagine a world where healing is not a privilege but a fundamental right. We envision a society where everyone, regardless of background or identity, can live their lives with dignity and agency, free from the chains of oppression. This holistic vision encompasses seven interconnected dimensions of healing, drawing upon the wisdom and insights from previous sections: Financial Healing: advocating for economic justice, wealth redistribution, and equitable access to resources, ensuring financial well-being for all individuals and communities. Spiritual Healing: nourishing diverse spiritual practices, engaging in interfaith dialogues, reclaiming personal spiritual paths, and creating inclusive spaces for healing and growth. Cultural Healing: preserving and revitalizing marginalized cultural traditions, fostering inclusivity, and striving for a world that celebrates the beauty and richness of all cultures. Governmental Healing: promoting democratic governance, human rights, participatory decision-making, and accountability at all levels of government, ensuring the empowerment and well-being of all citizens. Education and Awareness: cultivating knowledge, empathy, and critical consciousness through educational initiatives, dismantling oppressive narratives, and fostering understanding of diverse experiences. Collaboration and Unity: building bridges of solidarity, embracing diversity and shared values, dismantling systems that perpetuate division, and fostering collective healing and empowerment. Action and Advocacy: translating knowledge into transformative action, engaging in grassroots activism, demanding policy reform, and creating sustainable change at individual, collective, and systemic levels. By intertwining these dimensions, we carve a path towards a society that not only acknowledges the pain of oppression but takes tangible steps towards healing and liberation. Through education, inclusivity, activism, and accountable governance, we cultivate a world where the wounds of the past are acknowledged, healed, and transformed into the building blocks of a more just and equitable future.
