Book Human Development Report Mongolia 1997

Download or read book Human Development Report Mongolia 1997 written by Shahin Yaqub et al and published by DSConsulting. This book was released on with total page 77 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This groundbreaking Mongolian Human Development Report - the country's first - went beyond just chronicling Mongolia's state of development in statistics and graphs. It placed the story of the Mongolian people during the transition years (post-1989) at its heart, using photographs, stories and case studies to detail the bigger narrative at play. The Report was edited, designed, laid out and printed in Mongolia. Rather than following the example of other countries - where reports are sent to outside publishers, robbing countries of the opportunity to pick up modern publishing skills and to reap the economic benefits - the Human Development Report Mongolia benefited Mongolian publishing.

Download or read book In Their Own Words Selected Writings by Journalists on Mongolia 1997 1999 written by David South, Editor-in-Chief and published by DSConsulting. This book was released on 2015-02-28 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In their own words compiles by theme the vast number of stories and features by journalists on Mongolia's transition experience from 1997 to 1999. A rich and unusual resource for a developing country, this book offers the reader a one-stop snapshot of how a country handles the wrenching social, political, cultural, economic and environmental challenges of changing from one political and economic system to another. An excellent resource for scholars of austerity crises and for those seeking understanding on how to plot a path out of an austerity crisis. In particular, the collection of articles and stories show the impact austerity has on people and their lives. Unadorned by backward-looking historical narratives, these are accounts fizzing with the energy of the moment: a first draft of a tough time for most Mongolians.

Book Modern Mongolia

  • Author : Morris Rossabi
  • Publisher : Univ of California Press
  • Release : 2005-04-25
  • ISBN : 9780520938625

Download or read book Modern Mongolia written by Morris Rossabi and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2005-04-25 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Land-locked between its giant neighbors, Russia and China, Mongolia was the first Asian country to adopt communism and the first to abandon it. When the Soviet Union collapsed in the early 1990s, Mongolia turned to international financial agencies—including the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, and the Asian Development Bank—for help in compensating for the economic changes caused by disruptions in the communist world. Modern Mongolia is the best-informed and most thorough account to date of the political economy of Mongolia during the past decade. In it, Morris Rossabi explores the effects of the withdrawal of Soviet assistance, the role of international financial agencies in supporting a pure market economy, and the ways that new policies have led to greater political freedom but also to unemployment, poverty, increasingly inequitable distribution of income, and deterioration in the education, health, and well-being of Mongolian society. Rossabi demonstrates that the agencies providing grants and loans insisted on Mongolia's adherence to a set of policies that did not generally take into account the country's unique heritage and society. Though the sale of state assets, minimalist government, liberalization of trade and prices, a balanced budget, and austerity were supposed to yield marked economic growth, Mongolia—the world's fifth-largest per capita recipient of foreign aid—did not recover as expected. As he details this painful transition from a collective to a capitalist economy, Rossabi also analyzes the cultural effects of the sudden opening of Mongolia to democracy. He looks at the broader implications of Mongolia's international situation and considers its future, particularly in relation to China.

Book Diseases of Globalization

Download or read book Diseases of Globalization written by Christine McMurray and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-11 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The emergence of a global economy has led to the erosion of local autonomy and national sovereignty with an associated emphasis on the spread of liberal, free-market economics. A clear divide is appearing between those benefiting from and those disadvantaged by this process. Among the most important consequences are changes in the patterns of health and the prevalence of disease. While infant mortality is declining in most countries, and many formerly prevalent diseases are being successfully tackled, the move from subsistence to cash economies brings with it changes in diet, alcohol consumption and high levels of smoking; with the result that non-communicable, 'lifestyle illnesses' such as heart disease and diabetes are spreading rapidly. Similarly, growing divisions of wealth add to the problem, bringing diseases relating to poverty and malnourishment as well as those caused by affluence and over-consumption. Issues covered in this book include equitable and sustainable modernization, the determinants of health, the process of marginalization, and survival strategies on the periphery. The authors draw on primary case study material, largely from societies in the Pacific region undergoing modernization, to provide invaluable information for tracking and assessing the full impacts of these changes.
