The area lies largely upon the chalk hills of the Yorkshire Wolds, which here meet the sea in the impressive cliffs around Flamborough Head, but the wapentake also extended into the Vale of Pickering and the Plain of Holderness. There is thus a variety of landscape and agricultural history to describe. Much of the rolling wold land was occupied by open fields and sheep- walks until inclosure in the later 18th and earlier 19th centuries opened the way to improvement; on the lower ground much early inclosure took place, too. A dozen villages in the wapentake were depopulated in the Middle Ages. Most of the settlements are relatively small, but they include the one-time market town of Kilham and the seaside resorts of Bridlington and Filey. In the Middle Ages the 'old town' of Bridlington, with its priory and market-place, and the fishing village beside the harbour were quite separate, but with the growth of the resort of 'Bridlington Quay' from the late 18th century onwards they have been absorbed into a wide-spreading town. Bridlington has also had an interesting coastal and oversea trade and still supports a fishing fleet. The resort of 'New Filey' was established later, laid out near the old fishing village from c.1840 onwards, and its physical growth and commercial development have been more restrained than those of Bridlington. Fishing also forms part of the story of Flamborough. The wapentake contains a wide variety of ecclesiastical and domestic architecture, but there are two outstanding buildings: the great priory church at Bridlington, which survived the Dissolution with the loss of its chancel and tower, and the early-17th-century red-brick mansion of Burton Agnes Hall, replacing an old manor-house but retaining its 12th-century undercroft.

The aim was to examine the economic reasons for the growth of British shipping before the arrival of modern technology, with a particular attention on overseas trade. The first is an in-depth exploration the roles within the shipping industry, from shipbuilders and shipowners to seamen and masters, from an economic perspective. The second is a chapter-by-chapter review of British overseas trade with Northern Europe, Southern Europe, the Mediterranean, East India, and America and the West Indies. The final two chapters diverge from the main sections, and focus on the interplay between government, war, and shipping. Davis attaches no extra significance to any particular nation or role, and offers an even-handed approach to maritime history still considered rare in the present day. Costs, profits, voyage estimates, ship-prices, and earnings all come under close and equal scrutiny as Davis seeks to understand the trades and developments in shipping during the period. To conclude, he places the study into a broader historical context and discovers that shipping played a measured but crucial role in the development of industrialisation and English economic development. Was it to represent the opinions of constituents or to vote according to their informed opinions reflecting the needs of the kingdom? Most authorities have accepted Edmund Burke's depiction of 18th-century MPs, insisting it was their right to form their opinions without reference to the instructions of constituents. This study provides answers to these important questions and, in doing so, reveals that Burke's vision does not represent how the House of Commons functioned during the last two decades of the 18th century. Rather than focusing on specific issues or demographic groups, English MPs brings to the fore the legislative activity of a broad segment of late 18th-century English MPs. This book shows they were diligent legislators who attended to the needs of constituents, in the process developing strong connections with them. It demonstrates that these connections did not rest on shared beliefs in reformist ideologies except in, and around, the metropolis. Instead, they grew out of the members' timely and effective tending, session after session, to the host of measures brought forward by constituents and neighbours. McCahill explores, in fascinating detail, the consequences of this bond. In this book, McCahill draws from an impressive array of primary sources and secondary literature to combine a structural analysis with broad surveys and detailed case-studies. The result is an illuminating and a comprehensive account of the House of Commons between 1760 and 1790.
