Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until the day of Pentecost, the disciples, who had received, by the outbreathing of Christ, the indwelling Spirit, waited for His coming "upon" them; and when that day was fully come, with the outward manifestations of sound and flame, He came. They were baptized with the Holy Ghost; and not only baptized, but "filled with the Holy Ghost."-from Plain Papers on the Doctrine of the Holy SpiritIn the late 19th century, a new fascination with Pentecostalism gripped American Christianity, one that continues to this day to influence fundamentalist interpretations of the Bible. This 1899 book, a literal reading of Scripture, offers Christians the path to a direct relationship with the Holy Spirit. From the nature of this being to the absolute necessity of all Christians to commune with it, this is a vital historical work that all students of the Bible will want to read.OF INTEREST TO: Bible-study groups, seekers after wisdomAUTHOR BIO: American clergyman CYRUS INGERSOLL SCOFIELD (1843-1921), a Civil War veteran who fought for the Confederacy, was a lawyer until his evangelical conversion in 1879, after which his life was consumed with preaching and missionary work. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spirit Wind, a collaborative investigation into the works and person of the Holy Spirit, clearly and richly demonstrates diversity in theological perspectives but unity in the Christian faith. All theological discussions should aim at humbly respecting theological distinctiveness while sincerely encouraging theological conversations. Spirit Wind offers itself to achieve just that. Spirit Wind consists of nine chapters written by nine Chinese theologians, born in the Orient and trained in the West, who are now serving passionately as seminary professors in Australia, Singapore, Taiwan, or the United States. Each author endeavors to explain the person and works of the Holy Spirit not only from Chinese standpoints but also from biblical, historical, and cultural/pastoral perspectives, and yet all chapters are theological in nature. No theologian claims to capture all matters about the Spirit, but every author of this book is captivated by the powerful presence, sovereign freedom, and beautiful operations of the Holy Spirit. You will be, too!

HISTORICAL SURVEY OF THE DOCTRINE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT. IT only remains for me, in this last division, to subjoin as briefly as possible a historic outline of the development of the doctrine of the Holy Spirit, and a sketch of the discussions which it has undergone in the course of centuries. The history of this doctrine touches theology at so many points, sometimes in connection with the Trinity, sometimes with inspiration, sometimes with the doctrines of grace, at other times with the Person and mediation of Christ, that, were we to attempt a survey of all these debates, there is scarcely a point in the whole field of polemical theology or Church history which we should not be compelled to traverse. We must fix our eye on the salient points, therefore, and on the marked epochs in the history of the doctrine, that we may not be engulfed in details personal, dogmatic, or ecclesiastical. History, with its parallel testimony to Scripture, has a great importance which is not to be ignored; and it must be borne in mind that certain points of the doctrine at one time come more prominently into view, and others at another; that this topic at one time acquires interest, and that it falls again comparatively into abeyance. In the very earliest Christian literature, --that is, in the Apostolic Fathers, --and in the Epistle of Clemens especially, we find that the allusions to the Holy Spirit are all in the interest of spiritual religion, and by no means polemical (Clem. chap. xlvi.). The circular letter issued by the Church of Smyrna after Polycarp's death is of the same nature. The whole doctrine of the Spirit was at that time practical. The doctrine of the Spirit was accepted from the earliest age as an elementary truth in connection.
