Book excerpt: In 2015, we continued long-term sockeye salmon population studies at Hugh Smith Lake designed to evaluate adult sockeye salmon abundance and juvenile production. An estimated 36,000 sockeye salmon smolt were passed through a smolt weir operated at the outlet of the lake from 20 April to 6 June. We estimated 53% of the smolt were freshwater age 1 and 47% were freshwater age 2. From 18 June to 5 November, we enumerated the adult salmon escapement through a weir, conducted an ancillary mark-recapture study to confirm the weir count, and collected biological information to estimate the age, length, and sex composition of the sockeye salmon escapement. The weir count of 21,298 adult sockeye salmon was the 11th escapement in the past 13 years to exceed the lower bound of the optimal escapement goal range of 8,000-18,000 adult sockeye salmon. Age-1.3 adults were the dominant returning age class, representing an estimated 42% of the total spawning population. However, the proportion of all 2-ocean fish (age-1.2, 2.2, and 3.2 age classes; 51%) exceeded the proportion of 3-ocean fish (age-1.3 and 2.3; 49%), and the number of wild 2-ocean fish in the escapement (10,850 fish) was the second largest on record. Peak counts of live fish on the spawning grounds were observed on 14 September in Buschmann Creek (741 fish) and 13 September in Cobb Creek (194 fish). The reported subsistence harvest (690 fish) was the second largest since 1985. We used results from genetic stock identification analysis for the first time to estimate the commercial harvest of Hugh Smith Lake sockeye salmon in 2014 (15,000 fish) and 2015 (24,000 fish). The harvest distribution and estimated harvest rates (58% in 2014 and 52% in 2015) were similar to results from previous tagging studies.

Download or read book Hugh Smith Lake Sockeye Salmon Stock Assessment 2020 written by Teresa M. Fish and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2020, long-term population studies designed to evaluate adult sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) abundance and juvenile production at Hugh Smith Lake continued. The smolt weir count of 16,000 sockeye salmon smolt was tied for the 2nd lowest count on record. An estimated 48% of smolt were freshwater age-1 and 52% were freshwater age-2. The escapement was counted through a weir, a mark–recapture study was conducted to confirm the weir count, and biological data were collected to estimate the age, length, and sex composition of the adult sockeye salmon escapement. The 2020 weir count of 3,860 adult sockeye salmon was below the optimal escapement goal range of 8,000–18,000 adult sockeye salmon and was the 9th lowest escapement since 1980. Age-2.2 fish were the most abundant age class, representing an estimated 40% of the total spawning population. Counts of live sockeye salmon in Buschmann Creek (not including mouth estimates) only exceeded 250 fish during 4 of 18 surveys from 19 August to 7 November (peak count 556 fish on 27 October). Counts of live sockeye salmon in Cobb Creek peaked at only 27 fish on 30 September and all other counts there were less than 20 fish. Reported subsistence harvest was 70 fish and accounted for an estimated 2% of the terminal run. The estimated minimum harvest rate in the District 101–108 commercial net fisheries was 38% in 2020.

Download or read book The 2014 Chignik River Sockeye Salmon Smolt Outmigration written by Mary E. Loewen and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 71 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes the results of the sockeye salmon Oncorhynchus nerka smolt monitoring and enumeration project conducted by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) in the Chignik River system in 2014. The research was designed to estimate population size and age structure of outmigrating smolt, assess fish body condition, describe limnetic habitat conditions and forage base in rearing lakes, collect samples for genetic stock identification, and provide data for the Chignik River preseason adult sockeye salmon forecast.
