Book HIV HTLV I Associated Malignancies

Download or read book HIV HTLV I Associated Malignancies written by Joseph A. Sparano and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Infection with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and human T-cell lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I) is known to be associated with an increased risk of neoplastic disorders, especially Kaposi's sarcoma and aggressive B-cell lymphoma for the former, and T-cell lymphoma for the latter. The information obtained from the study of these infections has led to remarkable advances in our understanding of the immune system, as well as the biology of human neoplasms. The management of malignant diseases in such patients also poses substantial challenges to clinicians. This book provides an overview of the epidemiology, biology, clinical features, and clinical management of neoplasms occurring in such individuals. It is an important resource for clinicians treating these diseases, and for basic scientists who have an interest in this field.

Book Viral and Immunological Malignancies

Download or read book Viral and Immunological Malignancies written by Paul Volberding and published by PMPH-USA. This book was released on 2006 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The precise relationship between viral infection and malignancy remains an epidemiologic association and the subject of active investigation. Nonmalignant hematologic disorders have a similarly complex relationship with cancer-associated viruses and may offer insight into the pathogenesis of oncogenesis. This book explores the relationships between viral infections, immune impairments and the hematologic and malignant diseases, particularly against the backdrop of the HIV epidemic. By extending the scope to all of viral oncology the editors provide an invaluable resource on tumors related to other viruses other than HIV, particularly carcinomas of the cervix and anus with HPV and tumors of the liver with the various hepatitis viruses.

Book Molecular Pathogenesis of HTLV 1

Download or read book Molecular Pathogenesis of HTLV 1 written by O. John Semmes and published by Abi Professional Publications. This book was released on 1999 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has been almost two decades since the discovery of Human T-cell Leukemia Virus as the first human retrovirus linked to disease. The virus was first isolated from an individual suffering from an aggressive lymphoma and has since been conclusively linked to the development of Adult T-cell Leukemia (ATL). HTLV-1 infection has also been identified as the main etiological agent for a progressive neurodegenerative condition known as HTLV-1-associated myelopathy in Japan, and tropical spastic paraparesis in the Caribbean (HAM/TSP). In addition to ATL and HAM/TSP, the virus has also been associated with inflammatory disease, resulting in a cumulative lifetime risk of disease of about 10%. Given the widespread infections in areas of Japan, the Caribbean, and Africa, as well as the increasing incidence of infection in the United States and elsewhere, this virus warrants worldwide attention. Molecular Pathogenesis of HTLV-1 presents an updated perspective of our current knowledge of molecular events contributing to pathogenesis associated with HTLV-1. The book is divided into 5 sections with each section composed of multiple original research articles. Each article is written by a leading authority in the field. Issues addressed include progression to disease state, current disease models, and molecular events leading to pathogenesis. There are also two articles that provide a more general "layman's" perspective.

Book Retrovirus Infections of the Nervous System

Download or read book Retrovirus Infections of the Nervous System written by Michael B.A. Oldstone and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although retroviruses have long been associated with a variety of animal diseases, active research in the field of human retroviruses dates from the discovery of human immunodefici ency virus (HIV) in association with acquired immunodefici ency syndrome (AIDS). The enormous research efforts in this field have been directed toward understanding the nature of the virus and toward its elimination through preventive vaccin ation and the cure of the disease. Human T-cell leukemia virus (HTLV-l) was the first member of the human retrovirus family to be discovered. It was implicated as the cause of adult T-cell leukemia (ATL) even before the association of HIV and AIDS was established. Research on HTL V -1 has, however, been lagging behind that of HIV because of the importance of AIDS. Today HTLV-1 and possibly closely related HTLV-2 are associated with a variety of human neurologic diseases, and research activities in this field may show that human retroviruses can cause a variety of human diseases in addition to those affecting the nervous system. Papers in this volume attempt to acquaint the reader with the present state of research into retrovirus infection and related diseases of the nervous system.

Book Molecular Pathology of HTLV 1

    Book Details:
  • Author : Umberto Bertazzoni
  • Publisher : Frontiers Media SA
  • Release : 2019-03-25
  • ISBN : 2889457508
  • Pages : 225 pages

Download or read book Molecular Pathology of HTLV 1 written by Umberto Bertazzoni and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2019-03-25 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human T-cell leukemia virus type 1 (HTLV-1) was the first human retrovirus discovered, in 1980, by Gallo and co-workers. About 5-10% of HTLV-1-infected individuals are at risk of developing either a fatal malignancy, adult T-cell leukemia (ATL), or a chronic neuroinflammatory syndrome, HTLV-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP). Both diseases are incurable at present. Many issues concerning HTLV-1’s life cycle and pathobiology are still unsolved or controversial, and new approaches for prognostic stratification of patients and eradication of HTLV-1 infection are in high demand. In this Research Topic, the focus has been centered on discussing two main themes: the functional analysis and oncogenic potential of HTLV-1 regulatory proteins and the control of HTLV-1-associated diseases. The 22 articles in this eBook cover many different aspects of HTLV-1 infection and pathogenesis, providing new perspectives and groundwork for future studies.

Book Infections and the Rheumatic Diseases

Download or read book Infections and the Rheumatic Diseases written by Luis R. Espinoza and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-09-26 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive and up-to-date review of the basic and clinical aspects of infections and infectious processes that trigger or aggravate a variety of autoimmune and inflammatory musculoskeletal disorders. It delivers a timely update on the interactions between infection and rheumatic diseases in order to provide clinicians with the tools they need for proper diagnosis and treatment. The book is divided into five main sections. The first examines the basic aspects of bacterial infections with a discussion of molecular biology, the microbiome, various types of bacteria that cause infection, and recent advances in biologic therapy. The next section focuses on different forms of viral arthritis including hepatitis arthritis, arthritis associated with alpha viruses, and parvovirus-related arthritis. Subsequent chapters then discuss arthritis caused by mycobacteria, fungi, spirochete, and other miscellaneous arthritides. Following this are various analyzations on reactive arthritis and infection-related rheumatic diseases such as Whipple’s Disease, SAPHO Syndrome, rheumatic fever, and HIV-associated rheumatic manifestations. Finally, the book closes with three chapters on external impacts on infectious diseases such as climate change, vaccinations and systemic lupus erythematosus. Infections and the Rheumatic Diseases is an essential resource for physicians and related professionals, residents, fellows, graduate students, and nurses in rheumatology, clinical immunology, and internal medicine.
