Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: They were many, such as Tassaduk Ahmed, Altaf Ali, Ayub Ali Master and others who started the cogs turning and brought about changes for the community; one such change was capacity building for the youth of their time. Then the community needed to take the reign of living in UK by getting into the decision making systems. So in 1982, sadly after the 1978 murder of Altab Ali, the community leaders put forward seven Independent councillors to contest the seats in key wards in Tower Hamlets. The effort did not go to waste, we had the first two Bangladeshi councillors out of eleven contesting in four wards, St Katharine's, St Mary's, Spitalfields and Weavers. Out of which the Labour party candidate won in St Katharine's Ward and one Independent seat in Spitalfields. The community finally got in but it took many years before shifting the balance and directly addressing the deprivation and lack of investment in the borough and this book recognises and celebrates the councillors.

  • Pages : 118 pages

Download or read book Father to Child written by Mayar Akash and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2014 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "From the heights of joy to a much darker sorrow", Father to Child is a collection of inspirational poems and musing that follow the author's life from his own childhood up to when he has children of his own and wishes to pass some of wisdom to them. It deals with a vast number of emotional topics, from the heights of joy to a much darker sorrow. Akash expertly weaves a number of complicated themes throughout his poetry and expresses his feelings in a beautifully blunt form of honesty. This collection gives a clear idea of what it was like growing up in the author's shoes, how his cultural heritage and values shaped him as he grew up, and eventually how he came to terms with his identity. It also gives a deep insight into the struggles he has faced, in a touching, sometimes even heart wrenching manner. Like all great poetry, these touches your heart in a way you can't quite put words to; I enjoyed the soulful journey alongside the author, Mayar Akash.

Book Re Awakening

Download or read book Re Awakening written by Mayar Akash and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2017 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Re-Awakening on the steps of Royal London takes the reader back more than three decades, to a time when the activities of the far right political parties were active in the Bethnal Green area of London. It looks at the challenges which faced the communities living in the area at that time and how they coped with the intimidation and outright racism which manifested itself on the very streets where they lived. From the late 60's, all through the 90's and to the present day. Re-Awakening on the steps of Royal London is a record of one man's involvement in the demonstrations which defined the time and contributed to the defeat of hatred and the lack of inclusion and acceptance that was prevalent. Told in stories of the times and from the photographs taken by the author, Re-Awakening on the steps of Royal London is a moving account of how a community came together to beat the haters and ultimately remove them from the streets.

Book The Impact of the COVID 19 Pandemic on Green Societies

Download or read book The Impact of the COVID 19 Pandemic on Green Societies written by Chinmay Chakraborty and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-03-22 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers the sustainability issues of a green environment towards economics and society in terms of alteration in industrial pollution levels, effect of reduced carbon emissions, changes in water bodies characteristics with respect to heavy metal contamination, monitoring of associated impact with respect to ecology and biodiversity, impact of reduced noise levels and air quality influences on human health, handling and management of biomedical waste. According to WHO, 80% of people living in urban areas are exposed to air exceeding safe limits. The advent of "sustainability‟ in development science has led planners to apply evolving notions of "sustainability‟ to the contemporary debate over how cities and regions should be revitalized, redeveloped, and reformed. Market allocation of resources, sustained levels of growth and consumption, an assumption that natural resources are unlimited and a belief that economic growth will „trickle down‟ to the poor have been its hallmarks. The recent advance technology helps to promote green and clean modern societies continuously. The Internet of things will be playing an important role in the upcoming years in environment protection and sustainable development. There is a focus on paradigm shift in the sustainable development for the green environment during the period of isolation of COVID-19. This is the moment for the mobilization against the climate crisis. The sudden fall in pollutants and subsequent blue skies signifies a dramatic shift for India and also other affected countries during this period. Fighting climate change requires a collaborative approach between all spheres of society unlike the former. It must heavily redirect resources towards local, sustainable activities, including education, health, sustainable agriculture and circular management of resources. The impact of COVID-19 pandemic which has resulted in the dramatic change in the different aspects of the environment. The global lockdown has led to a rejuvenation of nature, ecosystems, biodiversity. Even urban environments are discovering a degree of peace and serenity, which led to decrease in greenhouse gas emission.

Book Heavy Metals in the Marine Environment

Download or read book Heavy Metals in the Marine Environment written by Robert W. Furness and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this volume is to draw together state-of-the-art reviews of knowledge onlevels of heavy metals in marine environments (particularly in marine animals), the dynamicprocesses in these systems, toxic effects, and threats presented by heavy metals in foods ofmarine origin. All heavy metals, whether biologically essential or not, have the potential to be toxicto organisms at a threshold bioavailability. Such threshold concentrations vary betweenmetals, between species and with the physicochemical characteristics of the medium, somelike copper being particularly toxic even though essential in trace amounts. Responses ofanimals to metals in their medium or food depend to a large extent on the ability of speciesto regulate levels attained in their tissues. Higher animals have the capacity to regulate levelsof many metals, while marine invertebrates can regulate some within certain limits. Whereanimals cannot regulate physiological levels of metals, an alternative strategy is to detoxifyand store metals in relatively harmless forms. Knowledge of the manner in which animals deal with potentially toxic concentrations of heavy metals is of fundamental importance in the assessment of metal pollution by analysis of metal levels in biological samples. The interaction of heavy metals with biological materials is a key theme running through this volume. Toxic effects may be reflected at the individual, population, or ecosystem level, affecting species composition and production levels, or may be of direct dietary significance to man. The global cycling of metals through the marine environment is crucially affected by biological processes.
