A fragile veil separates a seemingly idyllic small town from dark secrets lying just beneath. After his sister’s untimely death, life holds little meaning for teenaged CJ Slater. Numb, withdrawn, and plagued with self-doubt, CJ finds himself drawn into a dangerous mystery when he meets the enigmatic Izzy. Izzy believes the birthmark over her heart is a scar from when she was killed in a previous life. After a cataclysmically traumatic childhood, she ran away from home and dedicated herself to finding the person she believes to have brutally murdered her previous incarnation. While CJ does not believe in reincarnation, he believes in Izzy. Convinced she has tracked the killer to CJ’s town, the two slowly start to unravel the mystery and unwittingly unearth insidious and perilous secrets. At once a gripping mystery, a moving coming-of-age tale, and a philosophical examination of the human condition, Even After Always explores how we can recover what time takes away. It is an affirmation of the redemptive power of love and the belief in ourselves and each other.
Download or read book Antidote to a Curse written by James Cristina and published by Transit Lounge . This book was released on 2018-07-01 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Cristina and his work evoke Franz Kafka and Arshile Gorky. This novel is an astute exploration of the nature of identity.’ - Janette Turner Hospital It’s the 90s. Silvio Portelli returns to Melbourne after time spent teaching in England and rents a room from the charismatic octogenarian, Nancy Triganza. Nancy is having an elaborate aviary constructed to indulge her passion for birds. At a city sex shop, Silvio meets the mysterious Zlatko, a Bosnian immigrant and, in a previous life, a collector of rare birds. Silvio becomes obsessed with Zlatko, and his own journal and dreams begin to mirror Zlatko’s past, and in time the reality of what happened in Bosnia. Such revelations are counterpointed by Silvio’s own tense wait to learn the results of his tests for HIV. Bold in design, Antidote to a Curse is a story in which the hunter becomes the hunted, the writer the subject, and vice versa. Cristina lovingly captures Stalactites cafe where Zlatko and Silvio often meet, and a city enmeshed with Europe, both physically and in spirit. Rich with images and allusions yet grounded in the everyday Antidote to a Curse is a startling debut. Cristina subtly draws the reader deeper and deeper into a state of psychological obsession where only the truth can provide a way out.

Book excerpt: The official school drop-out figure in the US in recent years has been 25 per cent of the cohort. Estimates from large cities are often double these rates, and in some areas 60 per cent or worse. This text focuses on this problem in US schools, but from an unusual perspective. It is a study gained from in-depth interviews of 100 "stop-outs" - that is, those who dropped out but then decided to return to school. Four basic questions are posed by this text: who drops out?; why did they drop out?; what caused them to return?; and what intervention policies can be formulated to prevent students dropping out in the first place? The answers provided by this text for the last question are intended to make it of particular interest to school administrators.

Download or read book The Red Room written by and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2009-08-15 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern Korean fiction is to a large extent a literature of witness to the historic upheavals of twentieth-century Korea. Often inspired by their own experiences, contemporary writers continue to show us how individual Koreans have been traumatized by wartime violence—whether the uprooting of whole families from the ancestral home, life on the road as war refugees, or the violent deaths of loved ones. The Red Room brings together stories by three canonical Korean writers who examine trauma as a simple fact of life. In Pak Wan-so’s "In the Realm of the Buddha," trauma manifests itself as an undigested lump inside the narrator, a mass needing to be purged before it consumes her. The protagonist of O Chong-hui’s "Spirit on the Wind" suffers from an incomprehensible wanderlust—the result of trauma that has escaped her conscious memory. In the title story by Im Ch’or-u, trauma is recycled from torturer to victim when a teacher is arbitrarily detained by unnamed officials. Western readers may find these stories bleak, even chilling, yet they offer restorative truths when viewed in light of the suffering experienced by all victims of war and political violence regardless of place and time.
