Book Talking to Brick Walls

Download or read book Talking to Brick Walls written by Jacques Lacan and published by Polity. This book was released on 2017-10-23 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'I've been talking to brick walls' says Lacan, meaning: 'Neither to you, nor to the Big Other. I'm speaking by myself. And this is precisely what interests you. It's up to you to interpret me.' These brick walls are those of the chapel at Sainte-Anne hospital. Getting back in touch with his younger years as a junior doctor, Lacan amuses himself, improvises, and lets himself go. The intention is a polemical one: the best of his pupils, captivated by the idea that analysis evacuates all prior knowledge, have been raising the banner of non-knowledge, borrowed from Bataille. No, says Lacan, psychoanalysis proceeds from a supposed knowledge, that of the unconscious. One gains access to it by the path of truth (the analysand ventures to say what comes to mind, frankly and with no frills) when it comes to an end in jouissance (the analyst interprets what the analysand says in terms of libido). However, two further paths bar access to this one: ignorance (to devote oneself to it with passion is always to consolidate established knowledge), and power (the passion for might obliterates what is revealed by parapraxes). Psychoanalysis teaches the virtues of powerlessness: this, at least, respects the real. A wise lesson for an era, this era of ours, that has seen bureaucracy, arm in arm with science, dreaming of changing humankind in its deepest reaches - through propaganda, through direct manipulation of the brain, through biotechnology, and even through social engineering. Admittedly things were no better before, but tomorrow they could be far worse. Jacques-Alain Miller

Book Talking to a Brick Wall

Download or read book Talking to a Brick Wall written by Deborah Mattinson and published by Biteback Publishing. This book was released on 2011-10-31 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With a foreword by Michael Portillo. Deborah Mattinson had a unique perspective on the New Labour project. As Britain's leading political pollster, she has been monitoring public opinion since the mid-1980s, and helped transform Labour into Europe's greatest election-winning machine of the modern era. Most recently as chief pollster to Gordon Brown as Prime Minister, she has been on the frontline of electoral politics, consistently representing the voter's side of the story to the politicans. Sometimes, she has encountered scepticism - a belligerent John Smith made an unappreciative witness to one of Deborah's focus groups - and she has often had to convey unwelcome results - telling a grumpy Gordon Brown he needed to spruce up his appearance cannot have been easy. With a stellar cast, including Neil Kinnock, Peter Mandelson, John Smith, Tony Blair and Gordon Brown, Talking to A Brick Wall reviews the New Labour years from the voter's point of view. It tracks the ups and downs of the Blair/Brown era as seen from beyond Westminster, showing how closely political reputation correlates with voter connection. It profiles the swing voter, shows the importance of women's votes, and what gives a politician popular appeal, and maps the voters' views through the 2010 campaign and its immediate aftermath, showing how the electorate has been left out of political decision making and revealing the public's recipe for rehabilitating the Labour Party and rebuilding trust in democracy. A champion of democratic renewal through citizen engagement, Deborah Mattinson believes that we must move to new grown up partnership politics if democracy is to thrive.

Book Think Again

Download or read book Think Again written by Adam Grant and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2023-12-26 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: #1 New York Times Bestseller “THIS. This is the right book for right now. Yes, learning requires focus. But, unlearning and relearning requires much more—it requires choosing courage over comfort. In Think Again, Adam Grant weaves together research and storytelling to help us build the intellectual and emotional muscle we need to stay curious enough about the world to actually change it. I’ve never felt so hopeful about what I don’t know.” —Brené Brown, Ph.D., #1 New York Times bestselling author of Dare to Lead The #1 New York Times bestselling author of Hidden Potential, Originals, and Give and Take examines the critical art of rethinking: learning to question your opinions and open other people's minds, which can position you for excellence at work and wisdom in life Intelligence is usually seen as the ability to think and learn, but in a rapidly changing world, there's another set of cognitive skills that might matter more: the ability to rethink and unlearn. In our daily lives, too many of us favor the comfort of conviction over the discomfort of doubt. We listen to opinions that make us feel good, instead of ideas that make us think hard. We see disagreement as a threat to our egos, rather than an opportunity to learn. We surround ourselves with people who agree with our conclusions, when we should be gravitating toward those who challenge our thought process. The result is that our beliefs get brittle long before our bones. We think too much like preachers defending our sacred beliefs, prosecutors proving the other side wrong, and politicians campaigning for approval--and too little like scientists searching for truth. Intelligence is no cure, and it can even be a curse: being good at thinking can make us worse at rethinking. The brighter we are, the blinder to our own limitations we can become. Organizational psychologist Adam Grant is an expert on opening other people's minds--and our own. As Wharton's top-rated professor and the bestselling author of Originals and Give and Take, he makes it one of his guiding principles to argue like he's right but listen like he's wrong. With bold ideas and rigorous evidence, he investigates how we can embrace the joy of being wrong, bring nuance to charged conversations, and build schools, workplaces, and communities of lifelong learners. You'll learn how an international debate champion wins arguments, a Black musician persuades white supremacists to abandon hate, a vaccine whisperer convinces concerned parents to immunize their children, and Adam has coaxed Yankees fans to root for the Red Sox. Think Again reveals that we don't have to believe everything we think or internalize everything we feel. It's an invitation to let go of views that are no longer serving us well and prize mental flexibility over foolish consistency. If knowledge is power, knowing what we don't know is wisdom.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There’s nothing exciting about being forced into the fraternity of hurting parents, but once there, the question becomes one of survival – for you, your young adult offspring, your family and the relationships you all share. How do you deal with the issues and heartache that accompany the drama? And if you’re a Christian, how do you reconcile your understanding of who God is with the situation in which you find yourself? For most parents, understandably, the question becomes, “How can I get through to my son/daughter?” But the question that really needs to be asked may be, “How can I get a grip on myself so I don’t do things that make matters worse?” This book is a toolkit filled little by little—one tool, one difficulty at a time. With these tools, the Lord Jesus Christ upheld me, firmly but tenderly showed me options that lay before me, and helped me navigate—giving me fresh perspective—in the midst of heart-wrenching challenges. I shudder to think how I might have responded absent His help. Amazingly, often unbeknown to me, at the same time the Lord was helping me, He was wonderfully at work in the lives of our young adult children and our family as a whole. My toolkit is something I wish I’d never needed, but over time, it has become a treasure for which I am deeply grateful. I humbly share my treasure with you.

Book The Sunset Strip Diaries

Download or read book The Sunset Strip Diaries written by Amy Asbury and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2024-02-17 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There comes a time in every girl's life, when she has to choose good or choose bad. Amy Asbury chose bad, hands down. Good meant wallflowers, secretaries and subservient wives. Bad meant power- and a possible escape from a life of secrets. At twelve years old she was trying to make sense of a drug-addicted father and his disturbing behavior. By fifteen she was dealing with horrendous depression, blackouts and rape. At sixteen she was in a mental institution for suicidal tendencies and violent behavior. She knew she could never be normal. The only place for a girl like her was Hollywood. Read the true story of the social ascent (and eventual decline) of a girl in the Sunset Strip music scene of the early 1990's. From crazy parties to glittered junkies and man-eating strippers, Amy has chronicled what life was like back in the days of excess and debauchery. It is not just a fascinating look into an amusing time in pop culture, but also details the mindset of a young woman trying to find confidence and self-worth in a life full of pain and chaos. The party came screeching to a halt when the Grunge movement took over and heroin became more prominent. How far off track can a person go before it's too late?

Download or read book It s A Conversation written by Gwen La-Lande and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2022-09-27 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Communication is the venue people use to invite others to their mental party. It's a Conversation is a head-to-head and heart-to-heart collaboration between two friends. During their casual talks, they decided to use Post-its and record comments that sounded special and worth remembering. These jotted Post-its grew and became this book. The authors agreed early on that what people say frequently includes onion-peel layers of meaning that extends further than the literal words being spoken. This book shares their perspectives with the reader by offering some clarity to selected, familiar phrases and buzz statements. It's a Conversation takes a second, sometimes third look, before responding to the situations presented in each idiom. The authors are looking at the big picture, not just what was said. For example, an old adage like "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me" can unpack a deeper meaning once it is studied. It's a Conversation highlights the power your words have. Words can add to or subtract value from a person's quality of life. Unlike perishable groceries, words don't possess the luxury of a shelf life or an expiration date. Words outlive their microphoned participants, and yes, what is said, who says it, how and why it is said--always matters.
