Book The New Old Me

Download or read book The New Old Me written by Meredith Maran and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2017-03-14 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A funny, seasoned take on dashed illusions.”—O Magazine “I love everything Meredith Maran writes. She is insightful, funny, and human, and the things she writes about matter to me deeply. Her memoir, The New Old Me, is a book I don’t just want to read—I need to read it. So does everyone else who’s getting older and wants to live fully, with immediacy and enjoyment, which is to say, everyone.”—Anne Lamott, author of Hallelujah Anyway For readers of Anne Lamott, Abigail Thomas, and Ayelet Waldman comes one woman's lusty, kickass, post-divorce memoir of starting over at 60 in youth-obsessed, beauty-obsessed Hollywood. After the death of her best friend, the loss of her life’s savings, and the collapse of her once-happy marriage, Meredith Maran leaves her San Francisco freelance writer’s life for a 9-to-5 job in Los Angeles. Determined to rebuild not only her savings but also herself while relishing the joys of life in La-La land, Maran writes “a poignant story, a funny story, a moving story, and above all an American story of what it means to be a woman of a certain age in our time” (Christina Baker Kline, number-one New York Times–bestselling author of Orphan Train). Praise for The New Old Me: “High time we had a book that celebrates becoming an elder! Meredith Maran writes of the difficulties of loss and change and aging, but makes it clear that getting on can be more interesting, more fun, and a lot more exciting than youth.”—Abigail Thomas, author of the New York Times bestseller What Comes Next and How to Like It “By turns poignant and funny, the book not only shows how one feisty woman coped with a ‘Plan B life’ she didn't want or expect with a little help from her friends. It also celebrates how she transformed uncertainty into a glorious opportunity for continued late-life personal growth. A spirited and moving memoir about how ‘it's never too late to try something new.’”—Kirkus

Book excerpt: Winner of the 2018 Colorado Book Award, "Pritchett writes with an evident love for the mountains and the people that call them home (Westword). The residents of Blue Moon Mountain form a tight–knit community of those living off the land, stunned by the beauty and isolation all around them. So when, at the onset of winter, the town veterinarian commits a violent act, the repercussions of that tragedy are felt all across the mountainside, upending their lives and causing their paths to twist and collide in unexpected ways. The housecleaner rediscovering her sexual appetite, the farrier who must take in his traumatized niece, the grocer and her daughter, the therapist and the teacher, reaching out to the world in new and surprising ways, and the ragged couple trapped in a cycle of addiction and violence. They will all rise and converge upon the blue hour—the l'heure bleu, a time of desire, lust, honesty—and learn to navigate the often confusing paths of mourning and love. Writing with passion for rural lives and the natural world, Laura Pritchett, who has been called ""one of the most accomplished writers of the American West,"" graces the land of desire in vivid prose, exploring the lengths these characters—some of whom we've met in Pritchett's previous work—will traverse to protect their own.

Book Judgment Misguided

  • Author : Jonathan Baron
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press, USA
  • Release : 1998
  • ISBN : 0195111087
  • Pages : 238 pages

Download or read book Judgment Misguided written by Jonathan Baron and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1998 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: People often follow intuitive principles of decision making, ranging from group loyalty to the belief that nature is benign. But instead of using these principles as rules of thumb, we often treat them as absolutes and ignore the consequences of following them blindly. In Judgment Misguided, Jonathan Baron explores our well-meant and deeply felt personal intuitions about what is right and wrong, and how they affect the public domain. Baron argues that when these intuitions are valued in their own right, rather than as a means to another end, they often prevent us from achieving the results we want. Focusing on cases where our intuitive principles take over public decision making, the book examines some of our most common intuitions and the ways they can be misused. According to Baron, we can avoid these problems by paying more attention to the effects of our decisions. Written in a accessible style, the book is filled with compelling case studies, such as abortion, nuclear power, immigration, and the decline of the Atlantic fishery, among others, which illustrate a range of intuitions and how they impede the public's best interests. Judgment Misguided will be important reading for those involved in public decision making, and researchers and students in psychology and the social sciences, as well as everyone looking for insight into the decisions that affect us all.

Lonely No More: The Astonishing Power of Inner Bonding takes the reader on a spiritual journey of self-discovery and personal transformation, exploring the often-conflicting relationship between the false beliefs of the ego wounded self, how those false beliefs leave a person lonely and disconnected, and how to achieve true spiritual connection. Book The Art of Saving Your Soul

Download or read book The Art of Saving Your Soul written by James Schreiner and published by Uriel Press. This book was released on 2022-08-23 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hello fellow morning prayer and meditation enthusiast. This book brings you a blueprint to follow in helping you to get closer to a God of your understanding. I see myself as a spiritual person. I do not intend to tell you who your God has to be I give you the opportunity to find your God. My goal is to open your mind to the benefits of seeking God first thing in the morning. It is imperative that each individual spend a chosen amount of time talking to God. Equally important is your time spent listening to God. How do you know if the voice you are listening to is God’s? He is the soft gentle voice that you hear during the course of the day that says things like. “I do not think that is a good idea”. You know the one you did not listen to and later on when the crisis is over you wish you had. You asked yourself why did I do that? The other voice, the loud chatty one that can only offer you stuff is constantly leading you down the wrong path. My main objective is to help you to make better choices. To understand that Karma is real. Getting together for an hour each week is nice. What about the other 167 hours that the Darkside spends getting you to do things that are detrimental to your moral well-being. God will never tell you to throw a brick through someone’s window. Evil tells you that prayer is not required or to be taught in schools. I was the Evil narcissistic pathological liar who followed Satan’s game plan of looking for my happiness out there. My contentment was based on the just as soon as I get into the perfect relationship. Buy the most expensive car. Belonging to the right country club in the perfect neighborhood. Getting the impeccable outfit to wear to church on Sunday. My life had to be flawless at all times. I am here to tell you that nothing from out there will bring you the satisfaction and kindness that you crave until you surrender to God. He is the true source of Hope and wisdom. When I was at the lowest separation from God suffering from loneliness. I took no responsibility for my actions. My rage was turned inward which in turn caused me to suffer 22 years of depression. I happened upon the prayer of Saint Francis and changed my life forever. The Darkside is still wondering what happened. He thought he had a convert for life. As I put the prayer into action in my life and live by its principles I immediately acquired peace and serenity. That can only be achieved by finding God and introducing him into my life. It is my intention to help you to find that same peace of mind with the morning prayer and meditations that I am presenting in this book. It is intended to give spiritual advisors daily material to help others cope with their everyday routine. You cannot do this alone. Hopefully I can inspire you to find a Power greater than yourself. Thank You Jesus! June of 2022. Yours truly, James P. Schreiner

Book Three Free Sins

Download or read book Three Free Sins written by Steve Brown and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2012-02-07 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From a popular pastor and radio host—Three Free Sins teaches that the only people who make any progress toward being better are those who know that God will still love them, regardless of how good they are. This book is about the misguided obsession with the management of sin that cripples too many Christians. It’s about the view that religion is all about sin…about how to hide side sin or how to stop sinning all together. In the Introduction, the author toys good-naturedly with an agitated caller on his radio program, teasing him in a segment where he offers three free sins. The offer is real. Not that Steve has the power to forgive sins, but he wants to make the point that Jesus has made the offer to cover all of our sins – not just three. Chapter one, titled “Teaching Frogs to Fly,” is even better. The gist of this chapter is that you can’t teach frogs to fly, just like you can’t teach people not to sin. Steve tells a story about a guy who has a frog, and he’s convinced he can teach the frog how to fly. The man keeps throwing the frog up in the air or up against walls – all to the poor frog’s demise. The message is that even though people can be better, they can never not sin—just like a frog can never learn to fly, no matter how much pressure is put on it. Steve continues through the book to show readers that while they can never manage sin, they can relax in knowing that they are completely forgiven—not just of three, but of all.
