Book excerpt: A survey of Wesleyan churches and a review of current literature reveals that most pastors are bearing the burden of pastoral care alone. Only a few churches are effectively equipping and empowering lay persons to help provide this needed and meaningful ministry within the body of Christ. The purpose of this project is to demonstrate biblically and historically that the laity are gifted for ministry and that they are called to the task of shepherding God's flock. Further, this project seeks to present a model for implementing a lay shepherding ministry in the small to mid-sized church.

Download or read book Can the Pastor Do It Alone written by Melvin J. Steinbron and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2004-12-14 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When are you going to do something about pastoring our people? When he heard that cry, Dr. Melvin Steinbron realized that the centuries-long traditional roles of the clergy and laity - with the clergy doing the pastoring and the laity receiving it - is woefully inadequate to care for all the needs of people in our churches today. So he decided to do something about it. Believing that lay people also have ministry gifts, he, along with a team of church members, initiated a program to enable the laity to share in pastoring the congregation. You, too, can form a lay pastoring ministry which will benefit both pastor and congregation. This book will show you: -how to reach out on a continuing basis to every member of your church -how God gives pastoring gifts to lay people -how to prepare your congregation for a lay pastoring ministry -how to get organized -how to choose lay pastors -how to conduct a 15-hour equipping seminar -seven commitments lay pastors must make -seven common ministry problems and how they can strengthen rather than weaken your program -how to evaluate your program This is much more than a how-to book. It's a how-it's-being-done-and-you-can-do-it-too book. The lengthy track record of scores of lay people doing effective pastoring assures you that lay people can indeed do the pastoring.

Book Shepherding Like Jesus

Download or read book Shepherding Like Jesus written by Andrew Hébert and published by B&H Publishing Group. This book was released on 2022-03-01 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: POOR IN SPIRIT. BROKEN. HUMBLE. HUNGRY. SYMPATHETIC. PURE. RECONCILING. ENDURING. These are not the words that describe the typical picture of the modern-day successful American pastor, but these are the words Jesus said should characterize the lives of his twelve disciples. In many circles, the image of what a pastor is or does looks nothing like the picture Jesus paints for his disciples of the character that marks citizens of his kingdom. Shepherding like Jesus is a call to rebel against much of what our culture understands pastoral leadership to be and return to being the shepherd God has called pastors to be. It’s an invitation to recover the most essential element of pastoral ministry: the character of Christ.

Book Shepherding the Church

Download or read book Shepherding the Church written by Joseph M. Stowell and published by Moody Publishers. This book was released on 1997-03-11 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Times are changing. The Truth never will. It's tough to be a pastor today. Christians who stand up for what God has said are disregarded and labeled right-wing extremists. Political correctness and tolerance of anything but godly character is the norm. So how do ministers lead God's people in this pagan culture? How do they shepherd the flock as the lights fade dimmer and the nights grow colder? This book is not about programs. It not about developing the best techniques for numerical growth. Rather it is a discussion of the heart of the matter - the heart of the shepherd. In Shepherding the Church, Dr. Stowell takes a look at what it takes to be a truly effective leader from the inside out. He encourages today's leaders to focus on their own character, spiritual growth, and spiritual gifts. Examine some heart issues like: how do I prove to my congregation that I'm trustworthy? how do I lead by loving? how do I overcome insecurities? how can I transform lives with my preaching? how do I lead my flock by the way I live my life? how do I persevere?Even in these tough times, effective leadership is possible. Learn from Dr. Stowell as he encourages today's leaders to keep their eyes on the non-negotiables of Christian ministry.

Download or read book SHEPHERDING GOD S FLOCK written by David A Swincer and published by Integrity Publications. This book was released on 2017-08-01 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The traditional pastoral role has changed over the last decades, largely due to the growth of mega-churches. The senior pastor has tended to become more an executive leader with an emphasis on public preaching as the figurehead of a large organisation. The traditional pastoral role has been superseded in large part in these situations, with much of the regular pastoral role being performed by a range of associate pastors/elders with a primary function as pastors, with little if any preaching component. In the past, many churches did not have any pastoral assistance, and often the pastor was assisted by deacons, performing de facto pastoral roles, whilst also performing the normal administrative functions usually ascribed to deacons. This has meant that often the expectancy of performing this de facto pastoral role, has led to a more selective process for choosing deacons, often precluding some well-equipped and gifted men from a serving ministry because they did not simultaneously qualify as elders. We look at the pastoral role generally, but with a view to multiplying this role in order to meet the needs of growing congregations through the introduction of elders. Some practical considerations are given for the transition to introduce these changes. Alongside this, what is the function of women in leadership ministries of the church?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Luke 15:7 tells us that the whole heaven rejoices when one soul is won. It is the work of the shepherd to care for the souls of the Lord. They are tasked to watch over them, discipline them, teach them, guide them, etc. For this reason, shepherds are the heart beat of the Lord. The Lord Jesus Christ Himself is called the "Good Shepherd". To shepherd a soul is the greatest work and greatest miracle here on earth and those who do it faithfully will have a great reward. The salvation of a soul is precious in the sight of God and is the only event that is able to move the entire heavenly host to rejoice and celebrate the blood and the done work of the cross. Most importantly, shepherds must follow the Chief Shepherd-Jesus Christ-to lay down their lives. They must first follow Him and then teach the congregation to follow as well, according to the will of God. Through striking word pictures and stories that resonate with every pastor, this book will reinvigorate pastors' instincts for doing grace in the churches they shepherd. Author and pastor, Lee Eclov equips the reader to understand their calling, their equipping, ministering in difficult circumstances and relationships, the mutual benefits for the congregation and the pastor, and how to finish well. If you are training to be a pastor and wondering if you are called, a seasoned shepherd needing encouragement and affirmation, or simply someone who wants to encourage your pastor, you will appreciate the sage wisdom and confirmation poured out in the pages of Pastoral Graces.

Book Prepare Them to Shepherd

Download or read book Prepare Them to Shepherd written by Brian Croft and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2014-06-03 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are You Called to Ministry? Those who are involved in full-time ministry often say they have been “called” to do what they do. But what does that mean? Who does the “calling,” and how is it received? In Prepare Them to Shepherd, pastor Brian Croft unpacks the biblical model for preparing individuals for full-time ministry. In the past, training and sending individuals into full-time pastoral ministry and missionary work was viewed as the responsibility of the local church. Today, much of that responsibility has been delegated to Bible colleges, seminaries, and parachurch and mission organizations. The aim of Prepare Them to Shepherd is to challenge local churches to recover the biblical model for ministerial training and assume responsibility to identify and prepare gifted and godly individuals for service in Christ’s body. Part of the Practical Shepherding series of books, this insightful book provides pastors and ministry leaders with the practical help they need to test, train, affirm, and send those who are called into ministry.
