Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A clothes designer tries to coordinate her out-of-control life, in a novel from the New York Times–bestselling author that’s “juicy good fun” (Newsday). All of Karen Kahn’s dreams seem to be coming true. She’s been honored with the fashion industry’s most coveted award, her marriage is thriving, and some very impressive money is being dangled in front of her in a proposed buyout. The only thing missing is what she craves most—a baby. When she receives the heartbreaking news that she’ll never be able to have a child, it feels like the doctor’s verdict has pulled a loose thread—and suddenly everything seems to be unraveling. Now she has to take a hard look at her life and figure out what really suits her and what doesn’t . . . “This new novel by the author of The First Wives Club works at every level. An engaging, behind-the-scenes look at the fashion industry, it lays bare the frenetic pace, cutthroat competition and chronic backbiting of the world of couture. Also an engrossing family saga, it shows 40-year-old Karen, who is infertile, desperately trying to adopt a baby and, as an adopted child herself, searching for her birth mother. The narrative also offers a hilariously dark portrait of Karen’s immediate—and totally dysfunctional—family. A glittering New York social backdrop, plenty of namedropping, romance, some outstandingly creative characters . . . A book that fairly hums with excitement.” —Publishers Weekly

Book Outer Banks Piracy Iii

Download or read book Outer Banks Piracy Iii written by Shirley Mays and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2011-04-21 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is Shirley Mays' third book. She is a North Carolina real estate broker and an environmental consultant. She has a Research Center at the Cotton Exchange in Wilmington, North Carolina. This book is about a conspiracy to defraud the United States taxpayers perpetrated by individuals employed by the Resolution Trust Corporation (RTC) and its successor agency on the matter in question, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC). The Resolution Trust Corporation was a US government-owned asset management company mandated to liquidate assets of the defunct savings and loan associations ("S&Ls"). Between 1989 and mid-1995, the RTC closed or otherwise resolved 747 Savings & Loans Institutions (known as thrifts) with total assets in the hundreds of billions of dollars. Shirley Mays was certified by the RTC and the FDIC as a minority woman -owned corporation. She became an insider and a whistleblower. Her whistleblowing case filed with the Department of Justice in July of 1996 was covered up by the government with lightening speed. She filed an IRS Whistleblower Case in June of 2009. She and her Congressman are now going after the corporate criminals like the IRS went after Al Capone.. for tax evasion. She has their pseudo-Federal ID numbers. Whereas, there is no statute of limitations when you are able to show that they knew they were committing fraud. The IRS looks at a fraud case entirely differently. It can pursue any case where it can prove the company knew it was cheating, even if the underpayment was 20 years ago.

In Jay Lake's"The Stars Do Not Lie," Morgan Abutti is soon in fear for his life when he tries to announce his discovery of something in the stars that contradicts the creation myth of a major religion on his planet. In "The Weight of History, the Lightness of the Future," also by Jay Lake, set in the author's "Sunspin" series, the Howard Immortal, Before Michaela Cannon, and an untrustworthy shipmind investigate the cause of the Mistake, an alien attack on human civilization with an EMP weapon that occurred more than a thousand years ago and wiped out most of its technology. In "Sudden, Broken and Unexpected," by Steven Popkes, a burnt-out, talented musician is hired to help a world-class rock star divaloid, an electronic construct, prepare for her new world tour. There's only one problem, the musician passionately despises divaloids. In Robert Reed's"Eater-of-Bone," marooned human colonists, from the "Great Ship," fight for dominance on a planet inhabited by smaller, weaker, and less intelligent aliens. Finally, in "The Boolean Gate," by Walter Jon Williams, set in the 19th century, an elderly Samuel Clemens escapes his Mark Twain persona through his friendship with Nicola Tesla. As Tesla's inventions come to fruition, Twain suspects that Tesla has opened up a gateway to an alien intelligence.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book-length poem imagines the Hebrew prophet Amos writing his memoirs from beyond the grave. Born into poverty and obscurity, Amos the shepherd and sycamore pruner faced daunting challenges in his attempts to follow what he heard as God's charge to change the social structures of his time. He had his vocation and his art, but what chance did he have against entrenched political corruption and religious hypocrisy? As Amos examines his life, his art, his message, and his failure, he recognizes the impossibilities of the trackless path out of the desert that he walked in life, and he faces the awful truth that "reality has authors." The poor do not write that reality, and Amos takes both pride and umbrage that he is recorded forever in the biblical canon as a "major minor prophet." From the comfort of the afterlife, Amos explores life's deepest questions with such companions as Laozi, King David, William Shakespeare, and Michel Foucault. Amos learns that telling the truth isn't easy or perhaps possible, even from beyond the grave. Still, he cannot avoid considering human existence and asking: Is it necessary to speak truth to power when victory is impossible?
