Book How to Produce Extracted Honey Classic Reprint

Download or read book How to Produce Extracted Honey Classic Reprint written by George W. Phillips and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How to Produce Extracted Honey To produce honey one must have a big force of bees. The honey-productiveness of an apiary is not to be measured by the number of colonies it contains, but by the number of bees in the individual colony. Therefore the only way to achieve the best results in honey is to see that each colony is in good working order by the time the flow opens. To do so it will be necessary to examine each separately in order to ascertain its condition. Special attention must be given to each queen. Every one that is in any way defective should be replaced with another that is young and vigorous. It will never do to hang on to a queen whose prolificness is doubtful. The colony which she occupies will yield very little surplus, or, in all probability, no honey at all. Far better to replace her, even if you have to buy another in order to do so. The next thing that must be taken notice of is the strength of each colony. If the flow be a month or six weeks ahead, and your weak stocks have young prolific queens, you may make an effort to build them up to full strength in time for it; but if it be near at hand, a better way is to unite them. Book Comb Honey Classic Reprint

Download or read book Comb Honey Classic Reprint written by Geo; S. Demuth and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Comb Honey Sir: I have the honor to transmit herewith a manuscript entitled "Comb Honey," by Geo. S. Demuth, apicultural assistant in this bureau. In view of the increasing demand for the finest grades of comb honey and of a decrease in the amount of comb honey produced, it seems timely to present to professional beekeepers an analysis of the best practice as well as to point out some essentials to the production of maximum crops of the best grades. I recommend the publication of this paper as a Farmers' Bulletin. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Bee Keeping in Porto Rico Classic Reprint

Download or read book Bee Keeping in Porto Rico Classic Reprint written by W. V. Tower and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-05 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bee Keeping in Porto Rico Comb honey can be produced for home consumption, but beginners will find it much easier to produce extracted honey. The production of extracted honey is not only eas1er for the bee-keeper, but is much less work for the bees, than is the rais ing of honey in one pound sections. In making the extracted honey the comb is used over and over again by the bees instead of their having to build new ones each time, as is the case in making the pound sections. When the comb in the supers is filled with honey and well capped it 18 taken to the extracting house, uncapped, and the honey removed by the extractor. The empty comb is then given back to the bees for them to refill with honey, thus saving bees the labor of producing new wax. It is much easier to control the bees when extracted honey is raised, as there is less tendency on their part to swarm. Honey is raised in larger frames and the bees are not forced to so great an extent as in the production of comb honey made in small sec tions. Bees will not start to fill the one pound sections until they have filled every available cell in the brood chamber. This cramping of the brood starts the swarming fever; if they are not watched very little honey is produced in the section boxes and a swarm comes off, lessening the working force of the hive. This is not the case in the production of extracted honey, for, as soon as there is a flow, supers are added, provided the colony is strong and shows a tendency to store. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gleanings in Bee Culture, Vol. 16: January 1, 1888 I never like to recommend any thing I have nev er tried, sol kept silent on that point. Since it has come up, though, I will say that it is my Opin ion that _it will pay, under some circumstances at least, to, leave the extracting-combs on until a start has been made in the sections. This will be some more labor, and will increase the proportion of extracted honey produced; but there will not be such a break in the work of'the colony, and not so much liability to swarm. By the way, my bees do not swarm nearly so much as most others' seem to. I do not know whether the difference is in management, locality. Or bees; but it seems to me there is a difference. I am heartily glad to see SO many testify to the worthlessness of Old combs in sections. It will probably be hard work to get it into the heads of some that it is any thing else than wicked waste to melt up nice combs; but I think we can persuade the majority that all section combs not in the best possible condition had better be made over. It is not likely that many very soon will grasp the whole truth that it will not pay to save any such sections at all. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Microbiological Studies of Honey: I. Honey Fermentation and Its Cause; II. Infection of Honey by Sugar-Tolerant Yeasts The relationship of fermentation to the honey industry, however, has changed in late years The post-war period has seen in Canada an increased production of honey, and particularly of extracted honey, o'ur export trade has widened, home consumption has increased and become less seasonal in nature. These developments in the production and marketing of honey have all tended to increase the period of storage of honey before it reaches the table of the consumer, and as a consequence of this lengthened period of exposure of what is by nature a perishable product, spoilage by fermentation has assumed much more serious pro-portions, and may now be said to be one of the chief dith cultice which those engaged in honey production and marketing have to face and the source of serious financial losses in the industry. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Miscellaneous Papers on Apiculture: December 19, 1907 Since the invention of the centrifugal honey extractor, in 1865, and its introduction into America, a constantly increasing proportion of the honey of the United States has been put on the market as ex tracted. Formerly honey was rendered free from comb by mashing full combs of honey and straining the liquid through a cloth. This is strained honey, but the same name still clings, in some quarters, to the article removed from the comb by centrifugal force. The 'pro duction of extracted honey requires much less labor on the part of the bee keeper than does the production of comb honey, and it has several advantages over the latter. The principal reason why ex tracted honey is more generally produced in the United States than formerly may probably be found in the increasing demand for honey for baking and confectionery purposes; considerably more than half of the honey piit on the markets is used in this way.
