Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many things define a job seeker--experience, education, first impressions, connections, passion, and the value you might bring to the company you wish to work for. For decades, the perceived ideal candidate would have all of the above, most of the above; however, a good candidate would have a four-year college degree. To a great extent, an employer still would like someone with a four-year college degree. However, I believe this is changing. The need for those who work with their hands and those who are willing to work their way up through the various levels of an organization is becoming more and more desired by companies. The time it will take you to earn your degree, you could be making a nice living and will have accrued zero debt in the process. Plus, after working in an industry of your choice, something you do have an interest in, even a passion for, you may be on equal footing with a newly hired college grad based on the four years you have been working in your industry of choice, as you continue to work your way up through the company. You will find the more value you bring to a company, the more they will look to you to assume great responsibility. Typically, the more responsibility, the greater the paycheck. What makes this book timely is the fact as COVID-19 winds down, we are seeing many labor shortages in many areas and industries. Now is the absolute best time to go to an industry experiencing a labor shortage, or enter one of the numerous industries researched in this book and get yourself the job you always wanted, without the cost and time involved with getting a four-year college education. I have nothing against getting a degree, and there are still many fields where they will always be mandatory; however, the trades, service industries, government, railroads, law enforcement, plus many others will welcome you with open arms without the need for a four-year degree. I hope this book helps.
Download or read book Dams and Reservoirs Societies and Environment in the 21st Century written by Luis Berga and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2006-02-15 with total page 1373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water resources stored by dams and reservoirs play an essential role in water resource management, hydropower and flood control. Where there is an extensive network of dam infrastructures, dams have made a major contribution to economic and social development, providing considerable storage capacity per capita. However, dams and reservoirs may also have an important social and environmental impact, and should be studied within the framework of integrated water resource management and sustainable development. Dams and Reservoirs, Societies and Environment in the 21st Century presents the latest research on the role played by dams and reservoirs in 21st century societies, in developed, emergent and developing countries. It analyses the viability of dams and suggests alternative solutions from a holistic perspective, considering the technical, economic, social and environmental aspects. Other issues covered include the social acceptability of dams, public involvement and dam awareness. The book covers subjects ranging from dam engineering, through the benefits and drawbacks of dams, to their social and environmental impact, and contains numerous case studies of the constructive contributions that reservoirs have made to water development and management. The book is a valuable resource for professional and dam engineers, water managers, governmental organizations and commercial enterprises responsible for dam development and management.

Download or read book Sharing Ownership in the Workplace written by Raymond Russell and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 1985-06-30 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Employee ownership is the fastest growing organizational trend in American business. Instances of workers buying out closing plants, unions granting wage concessions in exchange for an employer's stock, and corporations using employee stock ownership as a defense against takeovers are occurring more frequently. But is the movement toward employee ownership a significant new trend or a repetition of past mistakes? Sharing Ownership in the Workplace traces the history of employee ownership in the United States and Western Europe to its incipiency in the nineteenth century. The findings are disturbing—labor-owned business tend to revert to conventional organizational structure. This book examines this phenomenon, an understanding of which is crucial for assessing the prospects of the emerging generation of employee-owned firms. It presents three contemporary case studies of businesses that have been employee owned for generations—scavenger firms, taxi cooperatives, and professional group practices—to determine what causes them to fail and what makes for successful labor-controlled operations. Throughout Russell integrates various ideological perspectives on worker-owned organizations, citing theorists as diverse as Karl Marx, Max Weber, Sidney and Beatrice Webb, Louis Kelso, and Peter Drucker. Special attention is paid to the processes that lead to employee ownership, cause it to spread, and either to endure or to degenerate over time.
