Download or read book Mozart in the Jungle written by Blair Tindall and published by Grove/Atlantic, Inc.. This book was released on 2007-12-01 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The memoir that inspired the two-time Golden Globe Award–winning comedy series: “Funny . . . heartbreaking . . . [and] utterly absorbing” (Lee Smith, New York Times–bestselling author of Guests on Earth). Oboist Blair Tindall recounts her decades-long professional career as a classical musician—from the recitals and Broadway orchestra performances to the secret life of musicians who survive hand to mouth in the backbiting New York classical music scene, where musicians trade sexual favors for plum jobs and assignments in orchestras across the city. Tindall and her fellow journeymen musicians often play drunk, high, or hopelessly hungover, live in decrepit apartments, and perform in hazardous conditions—working-class musicians who schlep across the city between low-paying gigs, without health-care benefits or retirement plans, a stark contrast to the rarefied experiences of overpaid classical musician superstars. An incisive, no-holds-barred account, Mozart in the Jungle is the first true, behind-the-scenes look at what goes on backstage and in the orchestra pit. The book that inspired the Amazon Original series starring Gael García Bernal and Lola Kirke, this is “a fresh, highly readable and caustic perspective on an overglamorized world” (Publishers Weekly).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many things define a job seeker--experience, education, first impressions, connections, passion, and the value you might bring to the company you wish to work for. For decades, the perceived ideal candidate would have all of the above, most of the above; however, a good candidate would have a four-year college degree. To a great extent, an employer still would like someone with a four-year college degree. However, I believe this is changing. The need for those who work with their hands and those who are willing to work their way up through the various levels of an organization is becoming more and more desired by companies. The time it will take you to earn your degree, you could be making a nice living and will have accrued zero debt in the process. Plus, after working in an industry of your choice, something you do have an interest in, even a passion for, you may be on equal footing with a newly hired college grad based on the four years you have been working in your industry of choice, as you continue to work your way up through the company. You will find the more value you bring to a company, the more they will look to you to assume great responsibility. Typically, the more responsibility, the greater the paycheck. What makes this book timely is the fact as COVID-19 winds down, we are seeing many labor shortages in many areas and industries. Now is the absolute best time to go to an industry experiencing a labor shortage, or enter one of the numerous industries researched in this book and get yourself the job you always wanted, without the cost and time involved with getting a four-year college education. I have nothing against getting a degree, and there are still many fields where they will always be mandatory; however, the trades, service industries, government, railroads, law enforcement, plus many others will welcome you with open arms without the need for a four-year degree. I hope this book helps.

Download or read book Cognitive Lexicography written by Carolin Ostermann and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2015-07-31 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: English lexicography and linguistics have always shared close ties, yet the potential of cognitive linguistics for lexicography has only been hesitantly acknowledged in the literature. This is what cognitive lexicography attempts to change by using insights gained in cognitive semantic research for the development of new dictionary features. After a short survey of the history and practice of English monolingual learner lexicography, as well as an outline of the relationship between linguistics and lexicography, three new dictionary features are developed. They cover three different cognitive semantic theories as well as three different parts of the monolingual dictionary entry, each time for a new set of lexemes. Frame semantics, conceptual metaphor theory, as well as cognitive conceptions of polysemy, are used to create a new example section for agentive nouns, a new defining structure for emotion terms and a new microstructural arrangement for particle entries. Dictionary analyses on all, as well as user studies on two of the features, complement these suggestions. The monograph thus presents a new approach to lexicography that incorporates into its description of lexical items how humans perceive and conceptualise language.
