Despite this terrifying statistic, millions of guns flow into the streets of the world each year. It is a multi-billion dollar industry, and one which is barely regulated. From AK-47s to M16 rifles; from Terrorist-owned shoulder-fired missiles to child soldiers, this enlightening guide reveals the disturbing reality behind the murky underworld of international arms trading. Explaining how deals can often operate on the edge of legality, and listing the world’s main players, it goes on to ask how the exchange of small arms can be tightened in the future. Full of insight and anticipating the danger of ever lighter and more powerful weapons, this is required reading for anyone who wishes to understand the world today and one of the key threats to development, prosperity and international peace.

Book Small Arms and Light Weapons

Download or read book Small Arms and Light Weapons written by Erwin Dahinden and published by United Nations Publications. This book was released on 2002 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are over 600 million small arms and light weapons (SALW) in circulation worldwide. Of 49 major conflicts in the 1990s, 47 were waged with small arms as the weapons of choice. Small arms are responsible for over half a million deaths per year, including 300,000 in armed conflict and 200,000 more from homicides and suicides. Multilateral cooperation in this area took a significant step forward when the United Nations Conference on the Illicit Traffic in Small Arms and Light Weapons in All Its Aspects was held from 9-20 July 2001 at UN Headquarters in New York. The General Assembly, in its Resolution 56/24V, welcomed the adoption of the PoA and reiterated Member States' support for action to curb the illicit flow of small arms and light weapons. This fourth volume in the Arms Control and Disarmament Law series addresses the issue of small arms and light weapons from the legal point of view, presented at the seminar on Small Arms and Light Weapons: Legal Aspects of National and International Regulations. Book Best Practice Guide Minimum Standards for National Procedures for the Deactivation of Small Arms and Light Weapons

Download or read book Best Practice Guide Minimum Standards for National Procedures for the Deactivation of Small Arms and Light Weapons written by and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Best Practice Guide on Deactivation of Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW) suggests minimum standards, approaches and procedures to ensure the permanent deactivation of SALW, and provides recommendations on how to incorporate these into national norms and legislation. The Guide details concrete measures for the participating States to take in marking and record-keeping of weapons and also puts forward technical specifications for the deactivation of SALW. It also contributes to the OSCE efforts in preventing diversion of SALW in the OSCE area and beyond. First adopted in 2018, the Guide has been reviewed and updated to ensure that it remains relevant and applicable. In recognition of the importance of ensuring irreversible SALW deactivation, the OSCE minimum standards have been strengthened by a number of technical updates for rendering SALW and their essential parts permanently inoperable. The Guide on Deactivation of SALW complements the set of OSCE`s Best Practice Guides on SALW covering all stages of a weapon's life cycle, advising states on responsible conduct in this area, starting with manufacturing, the proper marking of small arms, accurate and sustained record keeping, export control criteria and transparency about transfers, and finishing with deactivation, destruction and disarmament, demobilization and reintegration processes.

Book A Guide to International Disarmament Law

Download or read book A Guide to International Disarmament Law written by Stuart Casey-Maslen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-05-24 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Disarmament is integral to the safeguarding and promotion of security, development, and human rights. Hundreds of millions of dollars are spent each year on disarmament operations, yet no comprehensive guide exists to explain clearly the international rules governing disarmament. This book seeks to fill that gap. It describes the international legal rules that govern disarmament and the operational, political, and technical considerations that govern their implementation. This book aims to support compliance, implementation, and further development of international disarmament law. Traditionally, disarmament focused on weapons of mass destruction. This remains a critically important area of work. In recent decades, the scope of disarmament has broadened to encompass also conventional weapons, including through the adoption of rules and regulations to govern arms transfers and measures to eliminate specific munitions from stockpiles and to destroy explosive remnants of war. There have also been four "generations" of programmes to address small arms and light weapons at national or sub-national level through disarmament, demobilisation, and reintegration (DDR) programmes during and following the end of armed conflict. While an internationally accepted definition of disarmament does not yet exist, it is widely agreed that disarmament encompasses or interrelates with prohibitions and restrictions on the development, production, stockpiling, testing, and transfer of weapons and on their destruction. In addition to clarifying these elements, chapters of this guide will also consider the relationship between disarmament and the law of armed conflict, and with the United Nations Security Council, human security, public health, and non-state actors.

Download or read book Searching for Aid Effectiveness in Small Arms Assistance written by Kerry Maze and published by United Nations Publications UNIDIR. This book was released on 2010 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: States and organisations recognise the centrality of international assistance to help states prevent, combat, and eradicate the illicit trade in small arms and light weapons (SALW). However, addressing SALW remains a serious challenge for many states. States and organizations have yet to tackle important questions about the practices of delivering, evaluating, and measuring SALW assistance. This report explores these questions and highlights areas where further work remains to be done. Looking partly through an aid-effectiveness lens, this report aims to help the international community work toward ensuring that assistance is being used optimally and that states are measurably benefiting.
