Book The Wolves of Mount McKinley

Download or read book The Wolves of Mount McKinley written by Adolph Murie and published by UBS Publishers' Distributors. This book was released on 1985 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the time of Lewis and Clark, wolves were abundant throughout North America from the Arctic regions to Mexico. But man declared war on this cunning and powerful animal when cattle replaced the buffalo on the western plains, reducing the wolf's range to those few areas in the Far North where economic necessity did not call for its extinction. Between 1939 and 1941, Adolph Murie, one of North America's greatest naturalists, made a field study of the relationship between wolves and Dall sheep in Mount McKinley National Park (since renamed Denali National Park) which has come to be respected as a classic work of natural history. In this study Murie not only described the life cycle of Alaskan wolves in greater detail than has ever been done, but he discovered a great deal about the entire ecological network of predator and prey. The issues surrounding the survival of the wolf and its prey are more important today than ever, and Murie helps us understand the careful balance that must be maintained to ensure that these magnificent animals prosper. Originally available only in government publications which are long out-of-print, this account of a much maligned animal is now available in its first popular edition.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Snapshots From the Past: A Roadside History of Denali National Park and Preserve Visitors come to Denali National Park and Preserve for many reasons some to see spectacular scenery and the continent's highest peak, some to see wildlife, and some for a wilderness experience. In addition, there is the cultural story to discover, since humans have been a part of this landscape for thousands of years. Prehistoric hunter - gatherers roamed the hills, intent on providing food for their families; explorers trekked through the area making maps, prospectors and miners searched for valuable minerals, and park visitors have sought inspiration, education, and recreation. Travelers on the long and winding park road view a snapshot in time, of life today, but the road passes sites that go back in time, rich in history. This book presents snapshots of the past and tells stories about the sites, providing the perspective of decades. The book is arranged to follow the park road from east to west, from the park entrance to Kantishna, 92 miles away. There are few mileage markers to assist in locating sites. Instead. Standing at 20,237 feet, Denali is the tallest mountain in North America and has roughly 14,000 feet of vertical relief from base camp to summitmore even than Mount Everest. While native populations had lived within the boundaries of todays Denali National Park and Preserve for over 7,000 years, white settlers only arrived en masse starting in the 1890s. When they did arrive, it was to chase after Denalis abundant game supply and placer gold in the Kantishna mining area. Only a handful of renegades made attempts on the peak at the turn of the century. Setting off with two thermoses of hot chocolate and six donutsand a 14-foot spruce pole to set on the summitthe Sourdough Expedition reached the mountains north peak in 1910. Today, Denali draws over a thousand climbers each year, and the park provides a safe haven for wildlife and a beautiful natural playground for other backpackers and explorers.
