Book The Miner s Canary

Download or read book The Miner s Canary written by Lani GUINIER and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2009-06-30 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like the canaries that alerted miners to a poisonous atmosphere, issues of race point to underlying problems in society that ultimately affect everyone, not just minorities. Addressing these issues is essential. Ignoring racial differences--race blindness--has failed. Focusing on individual achievement has diverted us from tackling pervasive inequalities. Now, in a powerful and challenging book, Lani Guinier and Gerald Torres propose a radical new way to confront race in the twenty-first century. Given the complex relationship between race and power in America, engaging race means engaging standard winner-take-all hierarchies of power as well. Terming their concept political race, Guinier and Torres call for the building of grass-roots, cross-racial coalitions to remake those structures of power by fostering public participation in politics and reforming the process of democracy. Their illuminating and moving stories of political race in action include the coalition of Hispanic and black leaders who devised the Texas Ten Percent Plan to establish equitable state college admissions criteria, and the struggle of black workers in North Carolina for fair working conditions that drew on the strength and won the support of the entire local community. The aim of political race is not merely to remedy racial injustices, but to create truly participatory democracy, where people of all races feel empowered to effect changes that will improve conditions for everyone. In a book that is ultimately not only aspirational but inspirational, Guinier and Torres envision a social justice movement that could transform the nature of democracy in America.

Book How To Draw Step By Step For Beginner And Impress Your Teacher and Parents And Friends

Download or read book How To Draw Step By Step For Beginner And Impress Your Teacher and Parents And Friends written by Nitin Kanani and published by . This book was released on 2019-11-30 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We all used to draw as kids. It was easy back then, no matter if you used color pencils, a stick, or your finger on a steamy window. But even then you might have noticed that some children drew better than you. Not that you knew what "better" meant-all you knew was the sweetness of praise. Whenever you heard someone else being praised, and your own work ignored, you felt worse and worse. Eventually, you gave up on drawing. Why would you continue if nobody cared? Now, whatever the reason, you want to come back, but it seems so scary. Those children who never gave up are working as professionals now, and their art looks almost magical. How could you possibly bridge that gap? Will you ever catch up on them? The answer is, nobody knows. But it's not them you should be catching up on. There's your dream about you drawing what you want, in any style you want, without being constantly critiqued for your mistakes. That "future you" should be your ideal, because becoming as good as him or her is what depends on you, not the skill/determination of others.Once you set your future self as your point of reference, you'll be constantly progressing. Being better than yesterday is your goal. Doesn't it sound more possible than becoming as good as someone else in no time? If you agree with me, join me in this great quest. I won't show you how to draw-you wouldn't even want that! Instead, I'll show you how to learn to draw. I'll lead you through four big stages that you'll reach at your own pace. This is stage one. If you've wondered how to start after such a long break, here you'll find the answer. I'll present a set of exercises for absolute beginners-some of them you may find obvious, but it will only mean you're a bit more advanced than you thought! Ready? When you decide to learn something, the right attitude is far more important than all the textbooks in the world. I've already given you one piece of advice-compare your skills to your future self, not to others. There are more, so read this part carefully before starting the exercises.Perfection Doesn't ExistWhen you set up your goal, it may look completely plausible. "This is me today, and this is me when I reach the goal," that's what you imagine. There's a certain way to go between these two points, and it seems like something you can do. However, you miss one important point-your needs change with you.Today it may seem so amazing to be able to draw a stick figure, but only because you can't do it yet. Once you reach your goal, it loses its power and you're looking for something else, something stronger. You can't want what you already have. That's why you may whine that you can't draw a stick figure as if it were some worthy skill, and someone who can draw a stick figure whines that they can't draw a real human. There is no point where you'll be good enough. That's how we're constructed, so just accept it. You'll never think of your skills: "I'm a great artist and I don't need to learn anything else, I just do it for fun at this point." It's not going to happen! There will always be something you can't do, something that would complete you... and once you get it, that new thing opens your eyes to a new world of things yet to learnIf there is a way to be perfect, it's to stop trying. You must understand that no matter how good you are at drawing, it will not make you a better, more valuable person than you are now. It's also true from the other side-no matter how bad you are at drawing, it doesn't make you less worthy. This brings us to another point: Do It for Yoursel

Book How to Draw What You See Easily Magically Fast

Download or read book How to Draw What You See Easily Magically Fast written by Larry Sparks and published by . This book was released on 2019-08-19 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: HOW TO DRAW WHAT YOU SEE EASILY AND MAGICALLY FAST By Larry J. SparksI have been an artist hobbyist for about 25 years. I started out late in life learning to create artistic drawings and paintings. I did not invent this technique to learn how to draw what you see. It has been around for more than a century. I just want to share what I learned. The technique is simple, so dont overthink it! What you are going to do is learn how to draw what you see. Your brain takes care of the rest! Most of us have 2 hands. If not, then you will need another object to observe. In my case, I learned to draw with my right (dominant) hand by observing my left or other hand! Pretty simple and only costs a little ink or pencil lead! For most people starting out (regardless of age) you can train your brain to drive your dominant hand holding the pencil (or whatever medium you choose) by looking at your other hand AND NOT LIFTING THE PENCIL FROM THE PAPER or looking at the result of your sketch until you are finished. Keep your eyes ONLY on the subject you are drawing! You say No Way? Generally, you will see progress in just a couple of weeks or so. You will want to keep practicing to get better. You may even want to draw your foot or some other object if you become bored looking at your non dominant off hand. But, you will see incredible progress and with practice from time to time you will learn a skill that should last as long as you like to draw or paint. In fact, after 25 years, I can fire up Photoshop, set up a brush and color and use my mouse (right dominant hand) to draw and paint directly on the screen without ever looking at the mouse! Wow! Beats the heck out watching stuff on the box when you can learn a useful skill instead! AND, IT IS A GREAT HOBBY!

Book The Neolithic of the Irish Sea

Download or read book The Neolithic of the Irish Sea written by Vicki Cummings and published by Oxbow Books. This book was released on 2015-03-31 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of 24 papers aims to reconsider the nature and significance of the Irish Sea as an area of cultural interaction during the Neolithic period. The traditional character of work across this region has emphasised the existence of prehistoric contact, with sea routes criss-crossing between Ireland, the Isle of Man, Anglesey and the British mainland. A parallel course of investigation, however, has demonstrated that the British and Irish Neolithics were in many ways different, with distinct indigenous patterns of activity and social practices. The recent emphasis on regional studies has further produced evidence for parallel yet different processes of cultural change taking place throughout the British Isles as a whole. This volume brings together some of these regional perspectives and compares them across the Irish Sea area. The authors consider new ways to explain regional patterning in the use of material objects and relate them to past practices and social strategies. Were there practices that were shared across the Irish Sea area linking different styles of monuments and material culture, or were the media intrinsic to the message? The volume is based on papers presented at a conference held at the University of Manchester in 2002.

Book The Home Guard Training Pocket Manual

Download or read book The Home Guard Training Pocket Manual written by Lee Johnson and published by Casemate Publishers. This book was released on 2019-02-19 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpts from the many unofficial “manuals” avidly bought by members of the British Home Guard desperate to prepare for invasion during World War II. How would you clear a stoppage on a Bren Gun while in action? What is the most effective way to clear a wood of enemy forces? How best could you counter a landing by enemy airborne forces in your area? What measure can you take to help ensure accurate rifle fire at night? What qualities should you look for when selecting a patrol commander? Just a few of the practical questions posed—and answered—in the selection of publications included in The Home Guard Training Pocket Manual. Numerous manuals and training pamphlets were privately published during World War II to supplement the slim official Home Guard manual produced by the War Office. Covering everything from patrolling, night fighting, drill and small arms proficiency to the legal powers of the Home Guard, these manuals were welcomed by the men of local Home Guard units keen to do everything possible to prepare for possible invasion—when they would be the first line of defense. This pocket manual collates a selection of material from these fascinating publications, often written by serving soldiers and reprinted multiple times due to demand.
