Book excerpt: In Complaint! Sara Ahmed examines what we can learn about power from those who complain about abuses of power. Drawing on oral and written testimonies from academics and students who have made complaints about harassment, bullying, and unequal working conditions at universities, Ahmed explores the gap between what is supposed to happen when complaints are made and what actually happens. To make complaints within institutions is to learn how they work and for whom they work: complaint as feminist pedagogy. Ahmed explores how complaints are made behind closed doors and how doors are often closed on those who complain. To open these doors---to get complaints through, keep them going, or keep them alive---Ahmed emphasizes, requires forming new kinds of collectives. This book offers a systematic analysis of the methods used to stop complaints and a powerful and poetic meditation on what complaints can be used to do. Following a long lineage of Black feminist and feminist of color critiques of the university, Ahmed delivers a timely consideration of how institutional change becomes possible and why it is necessary.

Book excerpt: The groundbreaking novel from the Pulitzer Prize–winning author of American Pastoral that originally propelled its author to literary stardom: told in a continuous monologue from patient to psychoanalyst, this masterpiece draws us into the turbulent mind of one lust-ridden young Jewish bachelor named Alexander Portnoy. "Deliciously funny...absurd and exuberant, wild and uproarious...a brilliantly vivid reading experience." —The New York Times Book Review "Touching as well as hilariously lewd.... Roth is vibrantly talented." —New York Review of Books Portnoy's Complaint n. [after Alexander Portnoy (1933- )] A disorder in which strongly-felt ethical and altruistic impulses are perpetually warring with extreme sexual longings, often of a perverse nature. Spielvogel says: 'Acts of exhibitionism, voyeurism, fetishism, auto-eroticism and oral coitus are plentiful; as a consequence of the patient's "morality," however, neither fantasy nor act issues in genuine sexual gratification, but rather in overriding feelings of shame and the dread of retribution, particularly in the form of castration.' (Spielvogel, O. "The Puzzled Penis," Internationale Zeitschrift für Psychoanalyse, Vol. XXIV, p. 909.) It is believed by Spielvogel that many of the symptoms can be traced to the bonds obtaining in the mother-child relationship.

Book How to Complain More Effectively

Download or read book How to Complain More Effectively written by Charles M. Dobbs and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2015-01-02 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles M. Dobbs is a recently retired professor of history from Iowa State University; previously, he was a professor at Metropolitan State University of Denver. He taught courses in US and East Asian history, with a focus on diplomatic and military history. He authored five monographs, several dozen scholarly articles, and more than three hundred encyclopedia entries mostly focused in these areas. One of his favorite courses to teach was research methods, where he discussed how to frame the question, find appropriate materials and sources, and how to organize those sources and write up the materials in a compelling fashion. Dobbs earned his BA from the University of Connecticut and his MA and PhD degrees from Indiana University, all three in history. During his nearly four decades as a faculty member, Dobbs also spent fifteen years as assistant to the president. Duties included looking into complaints, overseeing, editing, and/or originating the presidents correspondence, helping organize outreach, and interacting with various publics. Separately, Dobbs has a long history of writing letters when he was disappointed in a product or a service he received. He has always believed that companies and organizations are strengthened by logical, well-argued letters drawing attention to a problem area. From these twin experiences comes this book, How to Complain [More] Effectively. It reflects experience in complaining about situations as well as having to look into such complaints to determine if the institution was at fault; and if it was, to offer a reasonable resolution, and if it acted correctly, to explain the situation and correct the record to reflect that appropriate action.

What skills do you have to learn—and then use—to make sure you get the payoffs you really want in your professional life and your personal life? The problem with so many positive-thinking books and self-help routines is that they don’t give you the whole formula. The Payoff Principle gives you that formula—Purpose + Passion + Process = Payoff—and then works as your guidebook, teaching you how to apply the formula to achieve success at work, at home, and everywhere you go. When you find purpose in what you do, exhibit passion for the outcome, and master the process to make it happen, you produce the payoffs you want, need, and deserve. Plenty of people have done exactly that, whether consciously and deliberately or accidently and luckily. But, you don’t have to depend on luck anymore. You have a formula for getting what you want. You have a practical set of strategies guaranteed to deliver greater happiness and success than you’ve ever experienced. All you have to do now is read The Payoff Principle to learn how to implement the formula to experience the new-and-complete you.

Book A Complaint is a Gift

Download or read book A Complaint is a Gift written by Janelle Barlow and published by Berrett-Koehler Publishers. This book was released on 1996 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Customer complaints can give businesses a wake-up call when they're not achieving their fundamental purpose--meeting customer needs. They are a feedback mechanism that can help organizations rapidly and inexpensively shift products, service, style, and market focus. Businesses that don't value their customers' complaints suffer from costly, negative word-of-mouth advertising. Presenting dozens of real-life striking examples of poor--and excellent-- complaint handling, Barlow and Moller show that companies must view complaints as gifts if they are to have loyal customers.

Two decades ago, Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus revolutionized the way we thought about love and partnership. John Gray's work has helped countless readers improve and even save their relationships. But as society evolves, relationships do, too. It's time to move beyond Mars and Venus, toward a new relationship model for modern couples. Today, men and women are no longer trapped by rigid societal roles. Now more than ever, we have the freedom to be our authentic selves. Women can access their masculine side, and men can embrace their feminine side. This new freedom is a good thing, but it also brings new challenges. Men and women still need the right tools and skills to help build stronger relation- ships. While previous generations sought "role mate" relationships, based on the more rigid gender roles of the time, today's couples need a new kind of relationship: a "soul mate" relationship. These more emotionally satisfying relationships require a deeper understanding of our partners' individual needs. In Beyond Mars and Venus, Gray teaches you how to strengthen your bond and grow in love together, so you and your loved one can meet each other's needs in the best way possible, bringing you lasting happiness and a fulfilling partnership.

Book How to Complain

Download or read book How to Complain written by Mel Stein and published by No Exit Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You are sitting down with family and friends in a supposedly smart restaurant - and the food is disgusting. What do you do when the waiter asks if everything is ok? Like the majority of the population, you probably half-smile and mumble something aquiescent. Wrong! You should always complain and always explain! A complaint without explanation is worthless. Ranting and raving is bad; controlled complaining is good. Don't just walk away, let the people who caused that feeling know why. In all cases you stand to gain a lot more than ranting, or not saying anything at all.

Book Fresh Complaint

  • Pages : 352 pages

Download or read book Fresh Complaint written by Jeffrey Eugenides and published by Knopf Canada. This book was released on 2017-10-03 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Proudly presenting the widely anticipated new work of fiction from the multi-award winning bestselling author of Middlesex--a #1 major bestseller in Canada--and The Marriage Plot--also an acclaimed national bestseller--and the beloved The Virgin Suicides. Featuring unseen stories from one of the most eclectic, dynamic fiction writers working today, Fresh Complaint brings together works both new and previously published--including the crème de la crème of Eugenides's beloved New Yorker stories, never before collected between two covers. Jeffrey Eugenides's bestselling novels have shown that he is an astute observer of the crises of adolescence, sexual identity, self-discovery, family love and what it means to be an American in our times. The stories in Fresh Complaint continue that tradition. Ranging from the reproductive antics of "Baster" to the wry, moving account of a young traveller's search for enlightenment in "Air Mail" (selected by Annie Proulx for The Best American Short Stories 1997), this collection presents characters in the midst of personal and national crises. We meet a failed poet who, envious of other people's wealth during the real-estate bubble, becomes an embezzler; a clavichordist whose dreams of art collapse under the obligations of marriage and fatherhood; and, in "Bronze," a sexually confused college freshman whose encounter with a stranger on a train leads to a revelation about his past and his future. Narratively compelling, beautifully written and packed with a density of ideas that belie their fluid grace, Fresh Complaint proves Eugenides to be a master of the short form as well as the long. Showcasing stories from as far back as the 1980s and as recently as 2017, Fresh Complaint is the career-spanning collection from the Pulitzer Prize-winning author.
