Book My Losing Season

Download or read book My Losing Season written by Pat Conroy and published by Bantam. This book was released on 2003-08-26 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • A deeply affecting coming-of-age memoir about family, love, loss, basketball—and life itself—by the beloved author of The Prince of Tides and The Great Santini During one unforgettable season as a Citadel cadet, Pat Conroy becomes part of a basketball team that is ultimately destined to fail. And yet for a military kid who grew up on the move, the Bulldogs provide a sanctuary from the cold, abrasive father who dominates his life—and a crucible for becoming his own man. With all the drama and incandescence of his bestselling fiction, Conroy re-creates his pivotal senior year as captain of the Citadel Bulldogs. He chronicles the highs and lows of that fateful 1966–67 season, his tough disciplinarian coach, the joys of winning, and the hard-won lessons of losing. Most of all, he recounts how a group of boys came together as a team, playing a sport that would become a metaphor for a man whose spirit could never be defeated. Praise for My Losing Season “A superb accomplishment, maybe the finest book Pat Conroy has written.”—The Washington Post Book World “A wonderfully rich memoir that you don’t have to be a sports fan to love.”—Houston Chronicle “A memoir with all the Conroy trademarks . . . Here’s ample proof that losers always tell the best stories.”—Newsweek “In My Losing Season, Conroy opens his arms wide to embrace his difficult past and almost everyone in it.”—New York Daily News “Haunting, bittersweet and as compelling as his bestselling fiction.”—Boston Herald

Book On Loss and Losing

    Book Details:
  • Author : Melvyn L. Fein
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2017-09-08
  • ISBN : 1351502085
  • Pages : 509 pages

Download or read book On Loss and Losing written by Melvyn L. Fein and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-08 with total page 509 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All people suffer instances of personal loss that cause distress. All too often, their discomfort is treated as a medical issue requiring treatment-usually through medication. Melvyn L. Fein argues for a broader understanding of loss and losing that offers another approach, which he characterizes as "resocialization." Indeed, how a person thinks, feels, and acts may all need to be reorganized if personal distress is to be overcome. Fein urges that we distinguish between the loss of something we once possessed and losing something that never came to fruition. Thus, it is possible never to achieve vital social roles, social statuses, and/or personal bonds, despite our individual efforts. While some of these losses are not necessarily problematic, others are extremely painful. Unfortunately, rather than investigate the source of this discomfort, distraught individuals frequently seek refuge in simplistic solutions. As a consequence, one of the reasons the medical model remains dominant is that the alternative is imperfectly understood. Fein presents a compelling case for a sociological interpretation of personal distress. Although he acknowledges that some personal suffering derives from biological sources, and that mental illnesses can spill over to cause social dysfunctions, he argues that it is important to recognize the social causes of human suffering. In thereby recognizing the limitations of the human condition, most of us can do better than blindly accept an inherited dedication to the medical model. On Loss and Losing offers a legitimate option without denying the reality of human suffering.

  • Author : Andrew Grof
  • Publisher : Sunstone Press
  • Release : 2015-09-01
  • ISBN : 1632930870
  • Pages : 142 pages

Download or read book Lost Loves written by Andrew Grof and published by Sunstone Press. This book was released on 2015-09-01 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this first-person account, a composer confronts cancer as well as an increasingly debilitating dementia that threatens to rob him of both his past and his present. In something of a last ditch effort he does his best to resurrect nearly forgotten loves as well as the music of the greats that once sustained him. In the process he finds the past no less difficult to deal with than his present and is forced to confront a most unflattering image of himself. The crisp yet lyrical writing is crisp yet lyrical and alternates between staccato and legato depending on the particular stages of the composer's illness. The Hamlet-like narrator is at once dangerously close and forbiddingly distant from the reader with a climax in death's full assault with hitherto hidden revelations.

Book Sin the Absence of Love

    Book Details:
  • Author : Daniel Stevens
  • Publisher : WestBow Press
  • Release : 2014-08-26
  • ISBN : 1490846026
  • Pages : 271 pages

Download or read book Sin the Absence of Love written by Daniel Stevens and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2014-08-26 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most evangelical Christians have a reasonable grasp on the Bible, especially the New Testament. The challenge is applying the principles taught by Jesus in making decisions. We are all taught to love our neighbor and put others interests ahead of our own. Does this mean we can never consider our own interests? Do we need to give everything away? When competing in sports or business, do we need to let our competitor win if we truly love them? Do we need to give others whatever they ask of us? How do we prevent ourselves from being taken advantage of? Is there sin within the church itself? Why has God set the world up the way He has? What is the purpose of evil and temptation? Why do our survival needs force us to be selfish? These are the questions this book attempts to answer.
