Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How Shakespeare's Skull Was Stolen and Found The uncle of the late Mr. M., a youth who bore the name of Frank Chambers, was placed with a medical man (the only one practising in Alcester) about the year 1787. He was a wild, rather dashing young fellow; not bad-looking, if a portrait taken in after years be evidence; and, coming straight from attendance at a London hospital, found the exclusive society of a small town uncongenial, and its restraints irksome. Owing to a certain mild escapade - the manuscript alleges that it was nothing more heinous than a practical joke upon the curate in charge at the tumbledown old rectory - he found it convenient to leave Alcester and to go abroad; and as Englishmen did not then dream of a trip to America or to Australia, his wanderings were confined to France, The heart of the French nation was then beginning to throb with the feverish heat of revolution, and 'gentlemen of the pave' had already defined liberty on the 'lucus a non lucendo' principle. Frank Chambers, like Arthur Young, was a strict observer of the national moral bankruptcy, and three of his letters from Rheims show that he was not deceived, like some greater minds among his own countrymen, by the tendency of thought and action in France at that remarkable period. This book is a reprint of that tale and of its sequel, published five years later. Was Shakespeare's skull really stolen? Or was that just a work of fiction?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, the author embarked on a fascinating journey in search of traces of the legendary playwright and poet, William Shakespeare, when he made London his main residence. This quest required extensive research, which, in the pre-digital era, must have been a daunting task. The account reveals a tumultuous period in English history, far from the idyllic image painted by many. It was a time of "theater wars," where rival houses competed fiercely, engaged in intense mudslinging and infighting. Amidst this backdrop, the elusive Shakespeare strove to mingle with high society, seeking inspiration for his works by eavesdropping on the conversations of patrons at a local pub. The journey of discovery reveals an intriguing portrait of an enigmatic figure, elusive and mysterious, shrouded in the drama of a turbulent time in English history.

Book Religion Around Shakespeare

Download or read book Religion Around Shakespeare written by Peter Iver Kaufman and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For years scholars and others have been trying to out Shakespeare as an ardent Calvinist, a crypto-Catholic, a Puritan-baiter, a secularist, or a devotee of some hybrid faith. In Religion Around Shakespeare, Peter Kaufman sets aside such speculation in favor of considering the historical and religious context surrounding his work. Employing extensive archival research, he aims to assist literary historians who probe the religious discourses, characters, and events that seem to have found places in Shakespeare’s plays and to aid general readers or playgoers developing an interest in the plays’ and playwright’s religious contexts: Catholic, conformist, and reformist. Kaufman argues that sermons preached around Shakespeare and conflicts that left their marks on literature, law, municipal chronicles, and vestry minutes enlivened the world in which (and with which) he worked and can enrich our understanding of the playwright and his plays.

Book excerpt: “One man in his time plays many parts, His acts being seven ages.” In this illuminating, innovative biography, Jonathan Bate, one of today’s most accomplished Shakespearean scholars, has found a fascinating new way to tell the story of the great dramatist. Using the Bard’s own immortal list of a man’s seven ages in As You Like It, Bate deduces the crucial events of Shakespeare’s life and connects them to his world and work as never before. Here is the author as an infant, born into a world of plague and syphillis, diseases with which he became closely familiar; as a schoolboy, a position he portrayed in The Merry Wives of Windsor, in which a clever, cheeky lad named William learns Latin grammar; as a lover, married at eighteen to an older woman already pregnant, perhaps presaging Bassanio, who in The Merchant of Venice won a wife who could save him from financial ruin. Here, too, is Shakespeare as a soldier, writing Henry the Fifth’s St. Crispin’s Day speech, with a nod to his own monarch Elizabeth I’s passionate addresses; as a justice, revealing his possible legal training in his precise use of the law in plays from Hamlet to Macbeth; and as a pantaloon, an early retiree because of, Bate postulates, either illness or a scandal. Finally, Shakespeare enters oblivion, with sonnets that suggest he actively sought immortality through his art and secretly helped shape his posthumous image more than anyone ever knew. Equal parts masterly detective story, brilliant literary analysis, and insightful world history, Soul of the Age is more than a superb new recounting of Shakespeare’s experiences; it is a bold and entertaining work of scholarship and speculation, one that shifts from past to present, reality to the imagination, to reveal how this unsurpassed artist came to be.
