Book The First Book of Plants Classic Reprint

Download or read book The First Book of Plants Classic Reprint written by Alice Dickinson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-06 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The First Book of Plants Plants grow almost everywhere in the world around us in all sizes and shapes. Some are so small that they can be seen only with a microscope. Others, like the redwood trees of Cali lornia, tower high in the sky. Plants grow not only in well watered soil, but in oceans, rivers, lakes and swamps, in deserts, on rocks, far above the ground on branches of trees, on old pieces of wood, even on such unlikely things as crusts of bread, old shoes, or on top of arctic snow. Some strange plants eat insects, and others steal food from their neighbors. Plants and animals are the living, growing things of the earth. Most animals move around, and many of them have sound apparatuses, for making noises. Most plants spend their whole lives silently in one place. Because they live so quietly, we sometimes forget that during their growing seasons they work hard all day long. For plants are just as alive as animals, and they have the same problems: finding and keeping a place to live, getting food, fighting animal enemies and plant rivals. Book First Studies of Plant Life Classic Reprint

Download or read book First Studies of Plant Life Classic Reprint written by George Francis Atkinson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-12 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Studies of Plant Life is written with a truly heart-warming purpose. Written by a distinguished academic but pitched at a level which is designed to allow a teacher to captivate a child in the earliest years of school. Atkinson takes the view that reasoning and 'why?' questions are suitable and appropriate for even the tiniest children and should not be held in reserve for a later date. It centres on an understanding of the 'life history' of a plant rather than tedious and traditional encouragements to rote learn and exclude context. George Francis Atkinson tells us in a startling modern way that a child does not best learn about a flower by uprooting it, dissecting and classifying it. Rather they should plant a seed, find out how it germinates, watch it grow, learn about its food, see how it breathes, reproduces and ultimately dies back. For as the author states 'When the child has once become acquainted with the conditions and necessities of plant life, how different will the world seem to him.' The book begins and progresses in an intuitive way. It begins with the particular characteristics of seeds and their peculiarities and progresses all the way on to the root systems, the changing colours of the leaves on trees and the bright momentary flowers and bids by plants for pollination and reproduction. Small engaging experiments suitable for independent learners, homeschooling or teachers in a classroom are outlined and encouraged, further tying the book to an inclusive ethos of hands on learning. A child could hardly fail to fall in love with botany when taught from this book but an adult has scarcely more opportunity to avoid being enthralled. This publication is intended for those with some knowledge of plants who want to grow one or more species for experimental purposes, for demonstra tions in schools, or for science projects where limited facilities are available. Techniques and equipment are described that are used at the Metabolism and Radiation Research Laboratory, Fargo, N. Dak., to raise crop and weed species in the absence of soil for experiments in which pesti cides and their metabolites are applied to plants or plant parts, often in radioactive form. Some of the techniques have been adapted specifically for use with radioactive tracers, where consideration must be given to the absorptive properties of the containers and their disposability or ease of decontamination. Book Growing House Plants Classic Reprint

Download or read book Growing House Plants Classic Reprint written by W. D. Holley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-19 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Growing House Plants No attempt was made to compare different soils or soil mixtures for any given plant. In each case, a soil mixture that was believed to be optimum for the plant studied was used. Leaf mold was used freely with good results. This material is available to all who will take the trouble to collect it. By raking away the litter in any wooded area, one can obtain black, well-rotted leaf mold. The material from deciduous trees is preferable to that from evergreens. Leaf mold will seldom give good results alone but is excellent for use in soil mixtures, when as much as half of the mixture may be of this material. The use. Of well-rotted manures is another help in soil mixtures. One of the reasons farm women are so successful with house plants is because manures are easily accessible to them. The age in which we live is an intensely practical one. Whatever our calling may be, it is likely that the majority of us spend most of our time in the keen pursuit of a professional or business career. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Growth and Tropic Movements of Plants Plant-physiology has been enriched by contributions to knowledge made by a succession of eminent and devoted workers. In regard to my own investigations on the subject, it may not be out of place to state that, being originally intended for the profession of medicine, I had the great advantage of pursuing at the University of Cambridge the study of the life-reactions of both plants and animals. Since then two subjects have claimed my closest attention the physics of inorganic and the physiology of living matter. Book Soil Conditions and Plant Growth Classic Reprint

Download or read book Soil Conditions and Plant Growth Classic Reprint written by Edward J. Russell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-14 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Soil Conditions and Plant Growth It is hoped that this new arrangement will prove satisfactory to students. It has the advantage that the book still covers the whole ground, while remaining of a manageable size, and that it is closely linked up with a series of similar books, each dealing with separate sections, in which more complete treatment and more fully informed criticism are given than I could myself undertake. On the other hand, the necessity for freedom of treatment, and the difficulty of placing such subjects as Soil Physics or Soil Protozoa under the heading of Biochemistry, compelled the withdrawal of the book from the important Biochemical Series, of which it has hitherto been a member. And, although Drs. Plimmer and Hopkins willingly consented, this course was not taken without serious consideration and regret: it in volves the separation of the book from a very useful series of volumes.
