Book excerpt: The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study was to discover and understand college students’ perceptions of the ways their lived experiences while participating in college student-run media have impacted their sense of self-efficacy. The central research question was, what are college student perceptions of how participation in college student-run media impacts their sense of self-efficacy? Bandura’s social cognitive theory of self-regulation, which explains how an individual’s environment, behavior, and personal factors combine and intertwine to produce feelings of self-efficacy, was used as the framework for this study. Purposeful sampling was used to select full-time students that had worked at least one semester on staff in a college, student-run media service, and were still active. The study site was a single, medium-sized college of approximately 7,678 students in the Mid-Atlantic United States. The participants for this study had primary editorial control over the content of the media productions they managed. Data were collected through individual interviews, individual media projects, and observations of related media group activities. The data were then analyzed using both Creswell’s and Moustakas’s procedures to identify the essence of the lived experiences. The central research question served to discover and understand participant perceptions of how college student-run media participation impacted self-efficacy. Subquestions included how participants described the environmental, behavioral, and personal factors related to that lived experience. The resulting data discovered three major themes supporting Bandura’s theory regarding how environmental, behavioral, and personal factors have a strong positive perceived effect on self-efficacy resulting from participation.

The developmental process of belonging is interwoven with the social identity development of diverse college students. Moreover, belonging is influenced by the campus environment, relationships, and involvement opportunities as well as a need to master the student role and achieve academic success. Although the construct of sense of belonging is complex and multilayered, a consistent theme across the chapters in this book is that the relationship between sense of belonging and intersectionality of identity cannot be ignored, and must be integrated into any approach to fostering belonging.Over the last 10 years, colleges and universities have started grappling with the notion that their approaches to maintaining and increasing student retention, persistence, and graduation rates were no longer working. As focus shifted to uncovering barriers to student success while concurrently recognizing student success as more than solely academic factors, the term “student sense of belonging” gained traction in both academic and co-curricular settings. The editors noticed the lack of a consistent definition, or an overarching theoretical approach, as well as a struggle to connect disparate research. A compendium of research, applications, and approaches to sense of belonging did not exist, so they brought this book into being to serve as a single point of reference in an emerging and promising field of study.

The purpose of this study was to examine the extent self-efficacy and involvement variables influence student success thereby offering potential strategies that could be implemented to improve student success at The University of Toledo (UT). The theories driving this study were Alfred Bandura's self-efficacy theory and Alexander Astin's student involvement theory. A combination of data collected at UT through the MAP-Works survey and NSSE survey was used to conduct a blocked stepwise regression to determine which self-efficacy and student involvement variables influence student success. The significant predictors of student satisfaction were then used to suggest possible strategies for improving the academic success of students attending UT which in turn will help improve retention, completion and graduation rates at the institution.

However, their retention rates are dismal and have remained stagnant for more than 30 years. The low retention rates have serious implications for community colleges and the community at large. Low retention rates impact such things as individual health and well-being as well as funding for colleges to operate. As such, this correlational study was designed to understand the relationship between student engagement and specific student characteristics and persistence in college. The specific student engagement variables examined were student-faculty interaction, college GPA, academic self-efficacy, late registration, and sense of belonging. Moderation and mediation analysis examined the effects of race, first-generation status, and high school GPA. Data from the Community College Survey of Student Engagement (CCSSE) that was administered at Tidewater Community College (TCC) was used for the analysis. The analysis revealed that high school GPA and student-faculty interaction are positively related to college GPA. Additionally, it found student-faculty interaction to be positively related to persistence. None of the moderation and mediation hypotheses were supported in the study. Given some of the issues found with the research design used for this study, it was recommended that future research consider conducting focus groups or interviews to study persistence instead of using archival data.

As a result, students must understand what, if any, impact social media usage had on their lives, specifically self-esteem. This quantitative, true experiment answered the question “What impact does social media usage have on the self-esteem of college students?” For the purpose of this study, social media usage was defined as time spent on Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, Twitter, and YouTube. This study took place at a private, small, four-year, liberal arts institution in the Midwest and included 61 participants. Participants were asked to voluntarily participate in a four-week study in which they were randomly assigned to one of two groups, abstaining from social media usage for the four weeks or continuing social media usage for the four weeks. These participants completed the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale as a pre-test and post-test to the experiment. The group of students who abstained from social media usage were given five open-ended questions to answer in the post-test of the study .The results indicated the self-esteem of college students is not impacted by social media usage. Students and higher education professionals should consider the ways social media usage influence their lives.

Book excerpt: As the number of rural, first-generation college students continue to rise, there was a gap in the literature regarding post-secondary enrollment and the self-efficacy of these students who participated in asynchronous credit recovery in high school to complete a high school diploma. In this qualitative, narrative study, I examined how completion of an asynchronous online credit recovery program influenced the perception of self-efficacy or rural, first-generation college students regarding academic success and social-emotional preparedness. Nine participants from rural towns in South Georgia provided insight related to their perceptions of their experiences in credit recovery. All nine participants perceived positive influences on their self-efficacy regarding academic success such as the improvement of individual work habits. These students also perceived the experience helped increase their awareness of the benefits of academic success, as well as environmental factors that contributed to academic success. Participants perceived credit recovery had no effect on their interaction with their peers or participation in campus activities or campus involvement. Participants did perceive self-advocacy as a direct result of having participated in credit recovery and had a positive perception of their self-efficacy regarding social-emotional preparedness. Factors that affect the retention of rural, first-generation college students’ academic success and social-emotional preparedness and understanding the students' perceptions of their self-efficacy may lead stakeholders to have a better understanding of the needs of these students.

However, the application of mindfulness in the field of communication is limited. With the rapid development of the Internet and new media, the study of Internet communication is growing rapidly. The Internet and new media make it easy to connect with others, explore a new world, and regard cyberspace as an extension of one’s own thoughts and personality. Nevertheless, when people use the Internet and new media mindless, they will easily experience the social effects on their virtual selves and encounter psychological problems (e.g. network morality, network anxiety, network pornography, network addiction, and cyberbullying), which has become a widespread and serious problem. As an important part of positive psychology, mindfulness intervention has been proved to help improve a series of negative psychological states and promote positive emotions and subjective well-being. However, what theoretical and practical contributions can mindfulness in the Internet and new media bring remains unknown. Thus, this Research Topic focuses on the influence and intervention of mindfulness on the psychological problems caused by the network new media communication. We welcome high-quality studies using a variety of research methods, including quantitative, qualitative, mixed methods, and reviews, on the second generation of mindfulness interventions and other meditation-based interventions (e.g., focused-attention meditation, transcendental meditation, and loving-kindness meditation).
