Book excerpt: Excerpt from How England Saved China In saying this they fail to recognize how much the England of to-day owes to the missionaries who brought Christianity to it, when it was barbarous and uncivilized. Neither have they read the history of other lands and marked how some of them have been elevated by English missionaries, and how the English flag is looked upon as the symbol of freedom and justice, in a large measure through the heroic services of her sons. If Africa could speak today, she would declare that the horrors of the past have been swept away through the devotion of Living stone, one oi the most distinguished of English missionaries, who gave his life for that dark continent. That many Christian men and members of Churches should speak in the same strain is still more distressing. The command of Christ, clear. The writer has been deeply affected by the fact that considerable numbers of Englishmen, merchants, scholars, working-men, &c., deliberately declare that missionaries ought not to be sent to the heathen. In saying this they fail to recognize how much the England of to-day owes to the missionaries who brought Christianity to it, when it was barbarous and uncivilized. Neither have they read the history of other lands and marked how some of them have been elevated by English missionaries, and how die English flag is looked upon as the symbol of freedom and justice, in a large measure through the heroic services of her sons. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Englishman in ChinaDaily the motion of the Ship thinned our ranks, until it became evident to the stewards that one table was enough. I was in a very agreeable set, and long shall I remember that voyage in the Indus, and the kind old captain. It was by far the best part of my long, long journey.I think I shall stay about a month in Egypt, and then on, on, on to the Flowery Land. As this will be the first letter you will receive, and as it, I suppose, will be handed the round, I shall not only make it long, but Shall keep it open, so as to be able to dot down the voyage.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book China England Classic Reprint

Download or read book China England Classic Reprint written by C. C. Lu and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from China England But while this gloomy picture of the state of affairs might have been partly true of China in the time past, it is no longer true now. The sick man is rapidly convalescent, the sleeping lion is awake, and the hoary and tottery empire has had new blood injected into her system. China is moving and she is moving with a rapidity difficult for one who has not personally witnessed the wonderful changes to understand and realise. Repeated defeats at the hands of the foreign Powers soon convinced our people of the futility of matching bows and arrows against modern guns and explosives, whilst our wooden junks went down before the onslaught of armoured cruisers and battleships like wheat before the scythe. For several years there was loud and threatening talk of doing violence to the integrity of the empire, and one actually appeared under the ominous work and unfortunate title of "The break-up of China." No sooner did books and newspapers containing discussions of this subject appear than they were translated into our language, and the wild rumours of impending violence filled the minds of the people with indignation and alarm, impelling them at, one may say, the point of the bayonet to devise ways and means whereby national danger might be averted. Proofs of incidents were not lacking to warn our people that all were not brothers within four seas. The rising of the 20th century ushered in the New China, beaming and teeming in the prime of its vigour, though sometimes tempered by the over-enthusiasm of its juvenile spirit. As we know that we are in need of new knowledge badly, batches of young men have been sent abroad for such scientific education. Many of them devoted a large part of their time to the editing of magazines and the translation of books, a veritable flood of literature thus pouring back to their fatherland, and reaching every nook and corner of the empire. Download or read book Origin and Progress of the War Between England and China written by John Worth Edmonds and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-20 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Origin and Progress of the War Between England and China: A Lecture Taught as American citizens are, that man is endowed with the inalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness; hav ing early learned, as we have, the lesson that it is the first duty of all governments to permit to each the pursuit of his own happiness in his own way, without intrusion from or molestation to others, we, cannot but regard the conduct of the Chinese Empire toward the other members of the great family of nations, as governed by a kin dred spirit. While other dynasties have arisen and flourished and fell, while other nations have with varied speed passed through the alternations of youth, manhood, and age, the adherence of the Chinese to this great principle, which is thus buried deep in the foundation of our prosperity, has caused century after centu ry to rise upon their empire, flourishing in vigorous activity. In an hour, which may yet be, if it be not already, fraught with immense evil to them, the Chinese so far relaxed from their exclu sive policy as to permit a foreign trade. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Life in China Hong Kong - Jericho - Timbuctoo! Are not these names used indifferently to represent the extreme of remoteness? Do not nine out of ten, even among well-informed English gentlemen, consider the first named a place with which we have little in common though it be a British possession, or at all events of little momentous interest? And are they not of opinion that its contingent loss need not, to any material extent, affect our national prosperity? Yet Hong Kong, apart from its military and naval value as our most advanced outpost in the far East, and from its commercial interest represented by an annual average British exchange of about forty-two millions sterling, is marked by characteristic advantages unparalleled in any single one of our other possessions. Book England s Policy in China Classic Reprint

Download or read book England s Policy in China Classic Reprint written by Andrew Wilson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-18 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from England's Policy in China Our 'position towards China is not entirely new, but the gravity of it is now being realised for the first the. England has more reason than Napoleon had in Egypt to remind her soldiers and her politicians in the Flowery Land that they are in the presence of Forty Centuries. His Forty Centuries looked down from Memnon's statue, from pyramid and obelisk and sculptured tomb, over great sandy wastes, and on a scanty degraded population long accustomed to the persuasion of the stick; but on the Expeditionary Force to China the Forty Centuries which look down are no ghost of a dead Past, but a vast nation, a polity, a mode of thought and modes of life, which have beheld the birth of authentic history, and, having survived the vicissitudes of four thousand years, are still hale and strong though they have lost the fire of youth. 'we have not to do with a country thinly peopled by savage tribes, which must yield their hunting grounds to the expanding populations of Bumpe. It is not a mouldering corpse or a sick man before which we now stand, but a great and grave nation sufi'ering chiefly from the wounds which we 'have ourselves wantonly inflicted. It is a nation with arts and sciences which content its wants; with a literature unequalled in the depth of its practical wisdom with a state of society more homogeneous and th oroughly organised than any other existing on the globe; with education generally diffused; with material benefits richly ahareii by the labouring classes with a population which numbers more than a third of the human race, and which neither desires our interference nor refuses to accept our commerce.
