Book excerpt: Online information seeking and online health information seeking are common practices today with the availability and prevalent use of the Internet and digital devices. People who are seeking health information online not only benefit from gaining or improving knowledge about health topics, diseases, treatments, and getting social support, they may also benefit from making well-informed and deliberate health decisions. Many studies showed that young people have great interest in online health information seeking, including sexual health knowledge and contraceptive methods. What prompts them to seek information to prevent unwanted pregnancy, and what influences their device preference for obtaining the information, is unknown. This study applied Planned Risk Information Seeking Model (PRISM), proposed by Kahlor (2010), to investigate Chinese young people's risk perception of and affective response to unwanted pregnancy and how unwanted pregnancy as a health hazard, together with other cognitive and motivational factors, predict people's information seeking intention of contraception. To better understand people's online information seeking, the proposed research model of this study expanded PRISM to further explore people's using intention of digital devices (computers/laptops and smartphones) as information seeking channels and their device preference when they intend to seek contraceptive information. The most important finding in this study is that Chinese college students prefer using a smartphone when they have the intention to seek contraceptive information on the Internet, and when both computers/laptops and smartphones are accessible digital devices to them. At the same time, in general Chinese college students rate computers as their preferred devices to seek contraceptive information. Perceived online information seeking control plays crucial roles in mediating information seeking attitude and in predicting people's online contraceptive information seeking intention, and it directly affects people's channel beliefs. The mediating effect impact of perceived seeking control on information seeking intention on devices is also highlighted as the most prominent indirect effect. This study also shows that perceived vulnerability to unwanted pregnancy rather than perceived severity of unwanted pregnancy is a significant predictor of people's contraceptive information seeking on the Internet. Hence it is more important to emphasize the likelihood of getting pregnant in sex education campaigns targeting young people in order to motivate their needs to seek information and learn more about contraception. In addition, although the study sample included both male and female college students, there were no significant differences in their information seeking attitudes and intentions despite male students reporting feeling higher information seeking control and vulnerability than female students on these topics. Implications of the findings for sex education campaigns related to contraceptives and optimizing information online for various devices are discussed.

Book excerpt: Background: Information seeking and scanning describe active and routine exposure to health information and its association with health behavior. These concepts may also be related to population-level health disparities. Previous literature notes that access and use of health information differs across racial and socio-economic status (SES), which may contribute to disparities in health outcomes. Inconsistent use of contraception, which occurs at disparate rates along ethnic and SES lines, may be related to disparate rates of information seeking and scanning. Objective: In order to understand what contraception information young women use and its association with factors in the integrative model of behavioral prediction (IMBP), this thesis assessed the information seeking and scanning behaviors of young women. Rates of seeking and scanning and sources for information were compared across ethnic and SES groups. Method: Rates of information seeking and scanning as well as sources used were assessed through an online survey of 578 women aged 18-29. Participants' knowledge, attitude, perceived norm, and perceived behavioral control (PBC), intention to use contraception, and contraception use behavior were measured. Demographic information such as ethnicity, age, relationship status, and SES was obtained. Results: There was a negative relationship between PBC and injunctive norms and scanning such that women who seek information more frequently had lower PBC. Rates of seeking and scanning were the same for all racial and SES groups. However, significant differences existed for the type interpersonal sources used to seek and scan across racial and SES lines. In addition, use of particular sources was related to consistent contraception use and intention to use contraception in the future. Discussion: Both interpersonal and mediated sources are associated with consistent use and intentions to use contraception in the future. Ethnic group and SES level are related to the sources used to seek and scan. Practitioners should target messages towards specific sources their audience depends on for information. Future theoretical work should look into the efficacy uses of information sources

Children born from unplanned conception are at greater risk of low birth weight, of being abused, and of not receiving sufficient resources for healthy development. A wider range of contraceptive options is needed to address the changing needs of the populations of the world across the reproductive life cycle, but this unmet need has not been a major priority of the research community and pharmaceutical industry. New Frontiers in Contraceptive Research: A Blueprint for Action, a new report from the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies, identifies priority areas for research to develop new contraceptives. The report highlights new technologies and approaches to biomedical research, including genomics and proteomics, which hold particular promise for developing new products. It also identifies impediments to drug development that must be addressed. Research sponsors, both public and private, will find topics of interest among the recommendations, which are diverse but interconnected and important for improving the range of contraceptive products, their efficacy, and their acceptability.
