Download or read book The Color of Work written by Timothy J. Minchin and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2003-01-14 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Histories of the civil rights movement have generally overlooked the battle to integrate the South's major industries. The paper industry, which has played an important role in the southern economy since the 1930s, has been particularly neglected. Using previously untapped legal records and oral history interviews, Timothy Minchin provides the first in-depth account of the struggle to integrate southern paper mills. Minchin describes how jobs in the southern paper industry were strictly segregated prior to the 1960s, with black workers confined to low-paying, menial positions. All work literally had a color: every job was racially designated and workers were represented by segregated local unions. Though black workers tried to protest workplace inequities through their unions, their efforts were largely ineffective until passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act opened the way for scores of antidiscrimination lawsuits. Even then, however, resistance from executives and white workers ensured that the fight to integrate the paper industry was a long and difficult one.

Download or read book The Curse of the Code written by Marlin J. Dorhout and published by Dorrance Publishing. This book was released on 2023-08-15 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About the Book The Curse of the Code is a witty but enlightening short fiction of the discriminating practices subtly employed against poor people by the IRS and the code it promulgates. What Real People Think Tony Carola A quick read in “people speak” language to help understand a complex subject; the tax code and its discrimination on low income US citizens. That discrimination ensures nearly half our citizens will never accumulate wealth. Donna I read Mr. Dorhout’s book. I was amazed and it made me angry. Why does my sister, a single parent, have to pay her land-lord’s income tax? How come the government doesn’t help her buy a home for HER family? They make everything easy for the rich but my sister will never have anything. I never thought my government would treat people so dishonestly. Thanh Nguyen, 1975 Vietnamese Refugee, DPS Prog. Mgr. After reading the book, I realized tax systems are designed to keep the wealthy with yachts above water, while someone like me is trying my hardest to keep my head from drowning. Joe Russoniello, US Attorney, N.D. CA (1982-’90, 2008-‘2010) The “Curse” gives the reader a look behind the IRS’s curtain of secrecy. I encourage those interested in what’s really going on with our tax enforcement policies to take advantage of Marlin’s rigorous analysis. Dare I say, “guilty as charged.”

Download or read book On Privilege Fraudulence and Teaching As Learning written by Peggy McIntosh and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-04 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From one of the world’s leading voices on white privilege and anti-racism work comes this collection of essays on complexities of privilege and power. Each of the four parts illustrates Peggy McIntosh’s practice of combining personal and systemic understandings to focus on power in unusual ways. Part I includes McIntosh’s classic and influential essays on privilege, or systems of unearned advantage that correspond to systems of oppression. Part II helps readers to understand that feelings of fraudulence may be imposed by our hierarchical cultures rather than by any actual weakness or personal shortcomings. Part III presents McIntosh‘s Interactive Phase Theory, highlighting five different world views, or attitudes about power, that affect school curriculum, cultural values, and decisions on taking action. The book concludes with powerful insights from SEED, a peer-led teacher development project that enables individuals and institutions to work collectively toward equity and social justice. This book is the culmination of forty years of McIntosh’s intellectual and organizational work.
