Book excerpt: This book explores the established field of healing narratives in the New Testament by focusing on the remembered tradition regarding Jesus’ healings and comparing them with those of other healers, such as Asclepius. A sub-theme to the book is to investigate the reception of Jesus as healer in various African communities. The book exposes the various healing methods employed by Jesus such as exorcism, touch and the use of spittle. Like any other healing performances that reflect the healthcare system of a given culture, Jesus’ healings were holistic: healing the bodily pain, restoring households and combatting stigmatisation and marginalisation. The book demonstrates Jesus’ healing activities as “shalom” performances that seek to re-establish peace in all its social dimensions. With regard to the reception of Jesus as healer in the African context, the book elaborates the sacrificial lamb motif and the need for restoring a relationship with God. All the contributions in the book present a unique and original perspective in understanding Jesus as healer from an African healthcare system.

Most of them pray almost everyday, and their relationship with God reflects the different ways that each of them experiences grief. Several of the widows lacked genuine and binding companionship because people consider them burdens. So they stay away from public spaces and feel lonely, which could be the reason why they compensate by creating a relationship with God. Most of these women also conceal their loneliness because it often creates worry and anxiety in their children so they cry alone and in private.

Book excerpt: In many countries, the status of women without men is very low; most often they are extremely marginalized from all aspects of society. Widowhood is a problem throughout the world where violence and severe discrimination are increasing due to conflict, unawareness and patriarchal societies in which we live. Widows are viewed as the curse to their families, often blamed of their husband's death where their struggle is invisible and their needs become a distant dream. All of these factors restrict a woman's ability to lead a dignified and empowered life. In India, there are an estimated 40 million widows, many of whom are child widows who have succumbed to a life of discrimination. The self-immolation of widows occurs where women are facing severe cruelty from their community and husband's family where they feel that there is no way out other than ending their life. Globally, sexual exploitation occurs between widows and their in-law's families, leading to psychological trauma, violence, economic insecurity and displacement of their children. Protection of this invisible group of women worldwide must be recognized, especially in developing countries as numerous human rights abuses are occurring against widows every day. The present book is on the socio-economic and psychological condition of widows in India especially Vrindavan. The study of Vrindavan's widows is done on the basis of a field survey. In this book, we tried to attempt not only their condition before widowhood and after widowhood but also their economic condition and the way of surviving after coming to Vrindavan. The book also shows how these widows are in vulnerable conditions and what they expect from the government. And last, suggestions were given by these widows as well as by authors for their welfare. Insights from the multi disciplinary field of gossip studies help to interpret what role gossip plays, especially in relation to how power and authority are distributed and promoted. A presentation of various texts in Greek, Hebrew and Latin shows that the relation between gossip and gender is complex: to gossip was typical for all women and risky for elite men who constantly had to defend their masculinity. Frequently the Pastoral Epistles connect gossip to false teaching, as an expression of deviance. On several occasions it is argued that various categories of women have to avoid gossip to be entrusted duties or responsibilities. “Old wives’ tales” are associated with heresy, contrasted to godliness in which one had to train one self. Other passages clearly suggest that the false teaching resembles feminine gossip by use of metaphorical language: profane words will spread fast and uncontrolled like cancer; what the false teachers say is tickling in the ear, and their mouth must be stopped or silenced. The Pastoral Epistles employ terms drawn from the stereotype of gossip as rhetorical devices in order to undermine the masculinity and hence the authority, of the opponents.
