Book excerpt: Global Housing: Dwelling in Addis Ababa' is the first book in a new series about Global Housing, edited by Nelson Mota and Dick van Gameren, published by Jap Sam Books in cooperation with the Delft University of Technology.00'Global Housing: Dwelling in Addis Ababa' brings together essays and architectural projects that discuss housing as a key component in the social and urban development of Addis Ababa, the capital city of Ethiopia. Over the last two decades the urban landscape of Addis Ababa has been changing at a fast pace, with disruptive consequences for the physical and social fabric of the city. Housing has been one of the key factors for this transformation, affecting job creation, craftsmanship, social and spatial equity, and dwelling practices, to name but a few.00The edited volume brings together twelve architectural projects developed by graduation students from TU Delft?s Global Housing educational program that explore alternative approaches to housing design, dwelling on the challenges brought about by Africa?s urban revolution.00Divided into two sections, this richly illustrated book offers reflections on the city of Addis Ababa, its different types of traditional and contemporary housing and its recent evolution in Part 1; and portfolios of the projects designed by the students enrolled in the program in Part 2. Each portfolio is structured around a theme or issue encountered by the participants in the studio, which is developed upon in a short study. A final essay based on interviews conducted with local actors and examining the challenges set by the city?s rapid urbanization concludes this fascinating contribution to innovative architectural thought in an increasingly urbanized world.

Book Public Rental Housing as Housing Delivery Strategy in Addis Ababa

Download or read book Public Rental Housing as Housing Delivery Strategy in Addis Ababa written by Yehanew Hailu and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2018-04-19 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2016 in the subject Politics - Region: Africa, , language: English, abstract: Rental housing takes the biggest share in Addis Ababa’s housing stock; above 50 percent. 37% is the share of the private rental sector; which is characterised by continuous rise in rent price and is becoming unaffordable for many poor households. Contrary to this is the public rental housing sector (PRH); it provides the most affordable housing units so far. With unrevised rent price and contract the sector has become permanent affordable shelter for many. Government policy that promotes home ownership has frozen the production of new PRH units. The study examines existing PRH stock in Addis Ababa in search of potentials and lessons for further developing the sector in the future. It focuses on apartments constructed by Agency for Government Houses (AGH); and studies development process, target group and management. Based on findings the study also proposes a strategy for developing the sector anew.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thesis (M.A.) from the year 2020 in the subject Economics - Other, grade: 1, Ethiopian Civil Service University (IGAD), language: English, abstract: This study has been conducted in Addis Ababa city of Akaki Kality sub city administration, Gelan condominium site with the general objective of assessing condominium houses affordability. It also attempted to identify the factors which affected the low income households for affording the condominium house and as well as to assess whether the condominium housing project benefits this targeted groups. Among other condominium sites Gelan site was chosen purposively. The study used mixing qualitative and quantitative methods and used primary and secondary data sources. To select the target population a researcher used simple random and purposive sampling technique. The study found that, majority of the residents of the condominium in the study area can afford the cost of condominium house because they were getting high income per month. However, the households with low income could not afford the price of condominium house. Furthermore, in the study area, condominium housing beneficiaries were not those who were classified as low and middle income categories rather households with higher income categories were benefited more. Majority of the housing units are owned by non targeted groups. The study also showed that, the intended objectives of condominium housing programs to provide 30 percent of the housing unit for female headed households has been well applied in to the study area. Additionally, the study revealed that, external factors such as poor investigation of the real problems on the ground, weak institutional evaluation and monitoring system of the program, the unparticipatory of the program and corruption practices was the main challenging factors that affects the households to benefited from the program. Based on the finding the researcher suggests the following to minimize the current problems of housing in the city through, giving special attention to control rural to urban migration, facilitating a comprehensive national housing policy by providing different subsidy mechanisms, establishing governmental housing banks that particularly work on the provision of low cost houses, encouraging the saving culture of the society, expanding the construction of rented houses, legislating and enforcing laws on the price of condo houses and increasing the participation of the city’s residents on evaluation of the program.

Book excerpt: Thesis (M.A.) from the year 2010 in the subject Urban and Regional Planning, grade: A, Addis Ababa University (Institute of Regional and Local Development Studies), language: English, abstract: This study has been conducted in Jimma town of ONRS with the general objective of assessing urban housing supply and its affordability with special reference to condominium housing. It also attempted to identify the factors which affected affordably condominium housing supply and local residents to afford for condominium housing in the town as well as to assess whether the condominium housing supply can solve the problems of urban housing for the urban poor. Data for this research were collected mainly through a survey of 180 households (120 households from non condominium residents and 60 households from condominium housing resident respondents) and analyzed using descriptive statistics and SPSS 15. The study found that, supplying of standard low cost housing for low and middle income groups are affected by high cost of local constructional materials, low level of income the majority of the residents, high housing costs and low capacity of the majority of the residents to afford for condominium housing in the study area. Beneficiaries of condominium housing were on average, those who were classified as high and middle income categories of the residents. The study also showed that, condominium housing beneficiaries are better off in terms of both mean monthly income and saving than the non condominium housing residents. Book Examining Rental Housing Affordability Among Eastern Ethiopian Cities

Download or read book Examining Rental Housing Affordability Among Eastern Ethiopian Cities written by Abaynew Wudu Belete and published by . This book was released on 2019-06-10 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientific Study from the year 2017 in the subject Economics - Case Scenarios, language: English, abstract: The rental sector had been neglected in government housing policy and in the local government's resource allocation, though it apprehended a large number of urban dwellers and which will undoubtedly continue in the future. The study aimed to examine the rental housing affordability, assess rental housing characteristics, identify factors which determined rental affordability and devised alternatives to promote rental housing affordability. In examining rental affordability about 651 questionnaires were distributed to rental households and government officials were interviewed to capture experience on rental regulatory and administrative issues. Global and local experiences on government housing policy and strategies revealed that the rental housing was less emphasized or sometimes, it was totally ignored. However, results from inter-census survey report revealed that the rental sectors had contributed much in addressing the residential needs of the urban poor and the contribution of the sector in addressing the housing needs were raised from 45 percent to 54 percent. Results from the logistic regression analysis indicated us the rental levels in the sample cities were in the threshold at least for 60 percent of the households. However, this event does not mean that rent is affordable; rather the lessee had a compromised adequacy of housing with monthly rental price to be in acceptable range. Therefore, the government should devise alternatives to promote rental sectors through regulation and policy interventions. Among the possible measures, getting rental housing on the larger urban policy is the first and central intervention. The government should regulate the rental market through regulatory and policy measures by making balance the interests of both landlords and renters.
