Book A Plea for Art in the House

Download or read book A Plea for Art in the House written by W. J. Loftie and published by Buck Press. This book was released on 2008-11 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PREFACE. THE Author of this very practical treatise on Scotch Loch - Fishing desires clearly that it may be of use to all who had it. He does not pretend to have written anything new, but to have attempted to put what he has to say in as readable a form as possible. Everything in the way of the history and habits of fish has been studiously avoided, and technicalities have been used as sparingly as possible. The writing of this book has afforded him pleasure in his leisure moments, and that pleasure would be much increased if he knew that the perusal of it would create any bond of sympathy between himself and the angling community in general. This section is interleaved with blank shects for the readers notes. The Author need hardly say that any suggestions addressed to the case of the publishers, will meet with consideration in a future edition. We do not pretend to write or enlarge upon a new subject. Much has been said and written-and well said and written too on the art of fishing but loch-fishing has been rather looked upon as a second-rate performance, and to dispel this idea is one of the objects for which this present treatise has been written. Far be it from us to say anything against fishing, lawfully practised in any form but many pent up in our large towns will bear us out when me say that, on the whole, a days loch-fishing is the most convenient. One great matter is, that the loch-fisher is depend- ent on nothing but enough wind to curl the water, -and on a large loch it is very seldom that a dead calm prevails all day, -and can make his arrangements for a day, weeks beforehand whereas the stream- fisher is dependent for a good take on the state of the water and however pleasant and easy it may be for one living near the banks of a good trout stream or river, it is quite another matter to arrange for a days river-fishing, if one is looking forward to a holiday at a date some weeks ahead. Providence may favour the expectant angler with a good day, and the water in order but experience has taught most of us that the good days are in the minority, and that, as is the case with our rapid running streams, -such as many of our northern streams are, -the water is either too large or too small, unless, as previously remarked, you live near at hand, and can catch it at its best. A common belief in regard to loch-fishing is, that the tyro and the experienced angler have nearly the same chance in fishing, -the one from the stern and the other from the bow of the same boat. Of all the absurd beliefs as to loch-fishing, this is one of the most absurd. Try it. Give the tyro either end of the boat he likes give him a cast of ally flies he may fancy, or even a cast similar to those which a crack may be using and if he catches one for every three the other has, he may consider himself very lucky. Of course there are lochs where the fish are not abundant, and a beginner may come across as many as an older fisher but we speak of lochs where there are fish to be caught, and where each has a fair chance. Again, it is said that the boatman has as much to do with catching trout in a loch as the angler. Well, we dont deny that. In an untried loch it is necessary to have the guidance of a good boatman but the same argument holds good as to stream-fishing...

Book The Art of the House Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Art of the House Classic Reprint written by Rosamund Marriott Watson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-28 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Art of the House Should the inspiration of the moment dietate to you a command for walls light in colour, you must not, having once put your hand to the plough, entertain any idea Of looking back. That would be to ruin all. A fastidious chastity of form and site must be the order Of the day; your pieces of furniture, very refined, very fit, and very few, are to be disposed here and there after anxious premeditation and earnest thought. They must correspond in their design with the spirit Of the wall-papers, or the panelling, and be placed just there (and in no other position than that) where they will tell the most effeetively as patches of a darker tone; or you may choose to set the whole - walls, chairs, tables, and all - in a high key; only remembering that if this be done you must keep just as tight a rein over your fancy as though the plenishing were Of dark wood. A severe elegance scrupulously maintained and con Sistently carried out in every particular, is the main characteristic of this method; the colour Chord, limited though it be, will have an austere sweetness that falls in well with some tempera ments, but a jarring note were disastrous. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Course in Household Arts, Vol. 1 A course IN household arts was prepared in 1902 for the Boston Public Schools of Cookery, and its use in that city was continued up to the time a revised edition of the book was contemplated. The lessons were planned with reference to the requirements of the different grades, no less than with due regard for the wide variation in the number and length Of periods devoted to the work. At the same time the material was so arranged that the essentials of the course could be covered in two years - the minimum of time recommended by the Board of Supervisors. This purpose was accomplished by dividing the course into two parts, Series A and B, each containing material for one lesson a week for a year, and each card including a sufficient number Of recipes illustrating the principles involved to admit variation to suit differing circumstances and conditions. Allow ance was made for needful drill in preliminary work and for the care and storage of materials and utensils customary at the close of the year. This inscription they had visited in a previous year. Further, the quick eye Of the hostess of Dunecht had caught sight of some curious sculptures on a stone by the road-side on the way to the minus cule inscription; and other like stones in the neighbourhood had been shewn in Stuart's two volumes of Sculptural Stones of Scotland. The suggestion was then made that for the sake of visitors at Dunecht a sort Of guide book should be prepared, giving some simple description of the several Objects and their meaning and uses. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Art in Dress: With Notes on Home Decoration To secure the best results in the use of these notes a copy should be in the hands of each student. The pamphlet is, in fact, a textbook on art as applied to dress and home decoration. The fundamental purpose in the study of art principles in connection with dress and home decoration is to create a desire in the minds of the students for beauty in those things which surround them in every-day life. To obtain this harmony and beauty in the ordinary things of life, one must understand the basic principles of good color and line. Few realize that every time we combine two 'colors or two lines we create a design whether we desire to do so or not, and the result is good or bad according to the knowledge or instinct that is guiding the hand of the worker. A girl's selection of a hat or a gown evidences her feeling, or lack of feeling, in design. It is therefore greatly to be desired that she should have a guiding principle, rather than to follow in blind obedience the erratic fashions of the day. Approached, like temples, through avenues of human or ram headed sphinxes, they con sisted of a series of courts surrounded by colonnades, to which pylons of colossal proportions gave entrance, and of many small chambers occupied by the king, his wives and children, and the officers of his household with their attendants. There were also several sanctuaries dedicated to as many divinities, where the king, who was deified during life, worshipped his own image as well as the images of his ancestors, and took part in other sacred rites. Download or read book Hints on House Furnishing Classic Reprint written by Walter Shaw Sparrow and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-11-13 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hints on House Furnishing Perhaps these are trite things to say, but trite things are Often neglected truths, to the meaning of which we have been blinded by custom. The more reasonable they seem to be at a first glance, the less likely we are to ponder them until we know the full extent of their reasonableness. We go wrong in the household arts, not because our rash adventures have the charm of novelty, are new and attractive, but because they are too familiar to be understood, and ought therefore to be looked at from a fresh standpoint, one of common reason. Grave writers say, for instance, without the least hesitation. That the arts belong to experts and connoisseurs, and that laymen cannot hope to be on familiar terms with them: an opinion not in the least likely to encourage the public, nor is it borne out by well-known events. Moliere's housekeeper was an excellent critic, Shake speare made a fortune by pleasing the London people, and laymen today are the main patrons of art, let their judgment be false or true. The principles of home decoration are held up as great mysteries, yet their appeals to the mind are quite simple and tangible, like the laws of cricket and football. The difficulty is to play the game well after the rules are learnt by heart. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
