Book excerpt: House Beat. There's no place like home--except if the house doesn't want you there! A Connecticut family living in a small apartment in Oaks, Pennsylvania, moves into an old semi-colonial house in Royersford, PA., needing a tremendous amount of work located about ten miles from King of Prussia. The Monahan family, Elizabeth, Kyle, and their children, Eleanor and Henry. This is the story of how their lives changed. From the outside, the house is very old-looking. The exterior is terrible, but nothing a little paint or siding won't take care of. The roof needs to be replaced. "I think I may have found a house for us!" Kyle says. "It has a nice piece of level property. A bit overgrown with brush, but that's easily cleaned up. When I saw the asking price, I had to take a drive-by. The house needs work--a fixer-upper, but it is more than three times the size of this place. What caught my eye was the price. We have almost enough put aside to buy it outright." The realtor unlocks the door. The hinges creak. "Creepy!" Henry stammers. The agent only goes as far as the door. She has an apprehensive look on her face and goes no farther into the house. The house has the usual problems any building built before the Civil War has; noisy pipes, creaky stairs, but they are soon to find out-- There is much more!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do we know music? We perform it, we compose it, we sing it in the shower, we cook, sleep and dance to it. Eventually we think and write about it. This book represents the culmination of such shared processes. Each of these essays, written by leading writers on popular music, is analytical in some sense, but none of them treats analysis as an end in itself. The books presents a wide range of genres (rock, dance, TV soundtracks, country, pop, soul, easy listening, Turkish Arabesk) and deals with issues as broad as methodology, modernism, postmodernism, Marxism and communication. It aims to encourage listeners to think more seriously about the 'social' consequences of the music they spend time with and is the first collection of such essays to incorporate contextualisation in this way.

Book The Pursuit of Happiness in Times of War

Download or read book The Pursuit of Happiness in Times of War written by Carl M. Cannon and published by Rowman & Littlefield Publishers. This book was released on 2005-09-15 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Founders wrote in 1776 that "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness" are unalienable American rights. In The Pursuit of Happiness in Times of War, Carl M. Cannon shows how this single phrase is one of almost unbelievable historical power. It was this rich rhetorical vein that New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani and President George W. Bush tapped into after 9/11 when they urged Americans to go to ballgames, to shop, to do things that made them happy even in the face of unrivaled horror. From the Revolutionary War to the current War on Terrorism, Americans have lived out this creed. They have been helped in this effort by their elected leaders, who in times of war inevitably hark back to Jefferson's soaring language. If the former Gotham mayor and the current president had perfect pitch in the days after September 11, so too have American presidents and other leaders throughout our nation's history. In this book, Mr. Cannon—a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist—traces the roots of Jefferson's powerful phrase and explores how it has been embraced by wartime presidents for two centuries. Mr. Cannon draws on original research at presidential libraries and interviews with Gerald R. Ford, Jimmy Carter, George H. W. Bush, and Bill Clinton, among others. He discussed with the presidents exactly what the phrase means to them. Mr. Cannon charts how Americans' understanding of the pursuit of happiness has changed through the years as the nation itself has changed. In the end, America's political leaders have all come to the same conclusion as its spiritual leaders: True happiness—either for a nation or an individual—does not come from conquest or fortune or even from the attainment of freedom itself. It comes in the pursuit of happiness for the benefit of others. This may be one truth that contemporary liberals and conservatives can agree on. John McCain and Jimmy Carter both envision happiness as a sacrifice to a higher calling, embodied in everything from McCain's time as a prisoner of war to the N

Book Kew Gardens and Other Short Fiction

Download or read book Kew Gardens and Other Short Fiction written by Virginia Woolf and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'The ponderous woman looked through the pattern of falling words at the flowers standing cool, firm, and upright in the earth, with a curious expression. . .So heavy the woman came to a standstill opposite the oval shaped flowerbed, and ceased even to pretend to listen to what the other woman was saying.' Virginia Woolf's short fiction has long been acknowledged as the place where she tried out some of her more experimental techniques before adopting and adapting them for use in her novel-length works. While this is certainly true, it is also the case that these short pieces are now increasingly being recognized as important works of art in their own right, rather than simply flights of experimental fancy awaiting their full actualization in the novel form. This new edition edited by Bryony Randall emphasises the startling variety in Woolf's experimentation during the most productive period of short fiction writing in Woolf's life, the late 1910s through to the end of the 1920s. It draws readers' attention to the deep political engagements evident across the range of her work and on the recent burgeoning of work in modernist print culture to set out the importance of the material context of these works' initial publication and reception.
