Zaroff, a big-game hunter himself, has heard of Rainsford’s abilities with a gun and organises a hunt. However, they’re not after animals – they’re after people. When he protests, Rainsford the hunter becomes Rainsford the hunted. Sharing similarities with "The Hunger Games", starring Jennifer Lawrence, this is the story that created the template for pitting man against man. Born in New York, Richard Connell (1893 – 1949) went on to become an acclaimed author, screenwriter, and journalist. He is best remembered for the gripping novel "The Most Dangerous Game" and for receiving an Oscar nomination for the screenplay "Meet John Doe".

Book excerpt: This Rondo Awards-nominated study describes how Richard Connell's famous story of 1924, "The Most Dangerous Game," has persisted into the New Century as an indelible influence. Michael H. Price and the late George E. Turner began tracing that influence as early as the 1960s, while interviewing the filmmakers responsible for the first adaptation, 1932's THE MOST DANGEROUS GAME. The research has continued apace, and it all comes together in THE HOUNDS OF ZAROFF. The book compiles kindred films, remakes, knockoffs, ripoffs, and toss-offs into a 250-page survey -- from the original film, through such famous titles as PREDATOR and THE TEXAS CHAIN SAW MASSACRE, through rank obscurities like WALK THE DARK STREET and CONFESSIONS OF A PSYCHO CAT. The coverage extends into the present day, with the HUNGER GAMES pictures of 2012-2013 providing a coda. A coda, yes, but never a cul-de-sac for one of the most often-filmed stories ever to see the light of cold print.

The Mad Lover About the Book: The Most Dangerous Game, also published as The Hounds of Zaroff, is a short story by Richard Connell first published in Collier's magazine on January 19, 1924. It features a big-game hunter from New York who falls off a yacht and swims to an isolated island in the Caribbean where he is hunted by a Cossack aristocrat. The story is an adaptation of the big-game hunting safaris in Africa and South America that were fashionable among wealthy Americans in the 1920s. Big-game hunter Sanger Rainsford and his friend, Whitney, are traveling to the Amazon rainforest for a jaguar hunt. After a discussion about how they are "the hunters" instead of "the hunted," Whitney goes to bed and Rainsford hears gunshots. He climbs onto the yacht's rail and accidentally falls overboard, swimming to Ship-Trap Island, which is notorious for shipwrecks. On the island, he finds a palatial chateau inhabited by two Cossacks: the owner, General Zaroff, and his gigantic deaf-mute servant, Ivan. Zaroff, another big-game hunter, knows of Rainsford from his published account of hunting snow leopards in Tibet. Over dinner, the middle-aged Zaroff explains that although he has been hunting animals since he was a boy, he has decided that killing big-game has become boring for him, so after escaping the Russian Revolution he moved to Ship-Trap Island and set it up to trick ships into wrecking themselves on the jagged rocks that surround it. He takes the survivors captive and hunts them for sport, giving them food, clothing, a knife, and a three-hour head start, and using only a small-caliber pistol for himself. Any captives who can elude Zaroff, Ivan, and a pack of hunting dogs for three days are set free. He reveals that he has won every hunt to date. Captives are offered a choice between being hunted or turned over to Ivan, who once served as official knouter for The Great White Czar. Rainsford denounces the hunt as barbarism, but Zaroff replies by claiming that "life is for the strong." Realizing he has no way out, Rainsford reluctantly agrees to be hunted. During his head start, Rainsford lays an intricate trail in the forest and then climbs a tree. Zaroff finds him easily, but decides to play with him as a cat would with a mouse, standing underneath the tree Rainsford is hiding in, smoking a cigarette, and then abruptly departing. After the failed attempt at eluding Zaroff, Rainsford builds a Malay man-catcher, a weighted log attached to a trigger. This contraption injures Zaroff's shoulder, causing him to return home for the night, but he shouts his respect for the trap before departing. The next day Rainsford creates a Burmese tiger pit, which kills one of Zaroff's hounds. He sacrifices his knife and ties it to a sapling to make another trap, which kills Ivan when he stumbles into it. To escape Zaroff and his approaching hounds, Rainsford dives off a cliff into the sea; Zaroff, disappointed at Rainsford's apparent suicide, returns home. Zaroff smokes a pipe by his fireplace, but two issues keep him from the peace of mind: the difficulty of replacing Ivan and the uncertainty of whether Rainsford perished in his dive. Book excerpt: 'Cary is great with a gun and deadpan about danger' Spectator Bill Cary makes a precarious living flying aerial surveys over Lapland. When he's hired by a wealthy American hunter, Frederick Wells Homer, to fly into a prohibited part of Finland near the Soviet border, the job seems shady indeed, and when a major crook wants him to go on the hunt for Tsarist treasure, things get messy. With thugs and the Finnish Secret Service already on his tail, matters get worse when Homer's beautiful sister turns up to search for him, and Cary's fellow bush pilots start getting killed off in a series of suspicious accidents. Cary begins to realise that it may all stem from an incident in his wartime past. The Most Dangerous Game was shortlisted for the British Crime Writers Association Gold Dagger Award. Book excerpt: Discover the remarkable history of the Peaky Blinders...Peaky Blinders is a popular BBC television series about an organized crime family in post-World War I Birmingham, England, but does this series depict the factual history of Birmingham? As it turns out, there were Peaky Blinders in Birmingham, and they terrorized those streets long before World War I. The Peaky Blinders rose to prominence in the overcrowded and unsanitary conditions of late Victorian Birmingham in the 1870s. Their ranks were composed of the working poor-trade union members who were fiercely loyal to each other-children who had no place else to go, and career criminals. Just how organized they became and the exact extent of their involvement in crimes other than street fighting and assault is a subject of some debate, but they did build a fierce reputation as violent criminals that plagued the citizens of this industrial city for a little over a decade. The Peaky Blinders were well-known for both their stylish clothing and their violent nature. No man, woman, or child was safe when they were on the prowl. The Peaky Blinders left a profound impression on the city they terrorized, and over 150 years later, their legend lives on in film and song. This book tells their story, from the early days of the slogging gangs to the end of the Peaky Blinder era in the lead up to World War I. Discover a plethora of topics such as Birmingham, the Birthplace of the Peaky Blinders Rise of the Peaky Blinders Mob Rule The Law Strikes Back The End of an Era The World Moves On: World War I And much more!
