Book excerpt: Welcome to the twentieth edition of the International Workshop on Mobile Computing Systems and Applications - HotMobile 2019. This is a special year for HotMobile as it is the 25th anniversary: in 1994, the first workshop in this series was held in Santa Cruz, CA. In the past 25 years, Mobile Computing has profoundly changed the world and our life. By 1994, Personal Computing had recently emerged as the giant of the computing industry; Microsoft was still working toward Bill Gates' dream of a computer on every desk and in every home; GSM, the second generation (2G) of cellular data networks, was being deployed. People had to wait for two more years for the first Nokia Communicator, arguably the first smartphone. A lot of people were working on wireless local-area network but the first 802.11 protocol would be released only three years later. Today, Mobile Computing is Personal Computing. We carry around mobile devices in various form factors that are more powerful by orders of magnitude than the PCs of that era; and our mobile devices are connected with wireless broadband faster than best home and office Internet back then by orders of magnitude. HotMobile 2019 provides a unique opportunity to reflect on the fascinating progression of mobile computing over the past quarter century, and to look forward to the next 25 years. In addition to the usual HotMobile program, HotMobile 2019 features a number of activities that exploit this opportunity. We are delighted that the Program Chair of the first HotMobile, Professor Mahadev Satyanarayanan, has invited many of the 1994 workshop participants to join us this year. HotMobile 2019 returns to the Dream Inn in Santa Cruz, CA, where it started in 1994. Our technical program features a keynote talk by Dr. Edmund Nightingale from Microsoft, 26 technical papers, a Pioneer's Panel organized by Professor Satyanarayanan as well as a Demo & Poster session. The Program Committee of 17 scholars selected the 26 papers out of 57 submissions. All submissions received at least three and usually four reviews. After online discussion, the PC met at Rice University for a whole day to make the final decisions. Due to the time constraints of the workshop, 6 of the 26 accepted papers are given shorter time for oral presentation. Nevertheless, all 26 papers are excellent and are included in the proceedings in the same way. Along with the posters and demos, these technical papers cover a broad scope of Mobile Computing with varied boldness and maturity.

Book Distributed Context Aware Systems

Download or read book Distributed Context Aware Systems written by Paulo Ferreira and published by Springer Science & Business. This book was released on 2014-04-22 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Context-aware systems aim to deliver a rich user experience by taking into account the current user context (location, time, activity, etc.), possibly captured without his intervention. For example, cell phones are now able to continuously update a user’s location while, at the same time, users execute an increasing amount of activities online, where their actions may be easily captured (e.g. login in a web application) without user consent. In the last decade, this topic has seen numerous developments that demonstrate its relevance and usefulness. The trend was accelerated with the widespread availability of powerful mobile devices (e.g. smartphones) that include a myriad of sensors which enable applications to capture the user context. However, there are several challenges that must be addressed; we focus on scalability (large number of context aware messages) and privacy (personal data that may be propagated). This book is organized in five chapters starting with an introduction to the theme raising the most important challenges. Then, chapter two presents several important definitions (establishing a common ground for the following chapters) and taxonomy. These are important to chapter three which describes some of the most relevant distributed context-aware systems that can be classified according to the taxonomy. Privacy is addressed in chapter four and chapter five presents some important conclusions. The audience for this book is wide; researchers, students and professionals interested in the areas addressed will find the most relevant information regarding scalability and privacy in distributed context-aware systems.

Book Race and Gender in Electronic Media

Download or read book Race and Gender in Electronic Media written by Rebecca Ann Lind and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-10-04 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume examines the consequences, implications, and opportunities associated with issues of diversity in the electronic media. With a focus on race and gender, the chapters represent diverse approaches, including social scientific, humanistic, critical, and rhetorical. The contributors consider race and gender issues in both historical and contemporary electronic media, and their work is presented in three sections: content, context (audiences, effects, and reception), and culture (media industries, policy, and production). In this book, the authors investigate, problematize, and theorize a variety of concerns which at their core relate to issues of difference. How do we use media to construct and understand different social groups? How do the media represent and affect our engagement with and responses to different social groups? How can we understand these processes and the environment within which they occur? Although this book focuses on the differences associated with race and gender, the questions raised by and the theoretical perspectives presented in the chapters are applicable to other forms of socially-constructed difference. Chapters 5, 10, 12, and 19 of this book are freely available as downloadable Open Access PDFs at http://www.taylorfrancis.com under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives (CC-BY-NC-ND) 4.0 license.
