Book A Catalog of Scolytidae and Platypodidae Coleoptera

Download or read book A Catalog of Scolytidae and Platypodidae Coleoptera written by Donald E. Bright and published by NRC Research Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication supplements Wood & Bright's 1992 catalogue of the world's Scolytidae and Platypodidae (bark beetles), updating the taxonomy of these two families to nearly the end of 1995 and including all known literature references to the end of 1994 (plus references to articles missed in the earlier bibliography). References which provide new information on taxonomy, host plants, or biology of a species are also included. The format of the supplement closely follows that of the 1992 catalogue. Each genus & species is listed with its page number from that catalogue; additional information on figures, distribution, hosts, and references to other subject areas are given. The publication also includes lists of host plants, arranged by scientific name, and the beetles attacking them.

It is the first book in the market solely dedicated to this important group of insects, and contains 15 chapters on natural history and ecology, morphology, taxonomy and phylogenetics, evolution and diversity, population dynamics, resistance, symbiotic associations, natural enemies, climate change, management strategies, economics, and politics, with some chapters exclusively devoted to some of the most economically important bark beetle genera, including Dendroctonus, Ips, Tomicus, Hypothenemus, and Scolytus. This text is ideal for entomology and forestry courses, and is aimed at scientists, faculty members, forest managers, practitioners of biological control of insect pests, mycologists interested in bark beetle-fungal associations, and students in the disciplines of entomology, ecology, and forestry. Provides the only synthesis of the literature on bark beetles Features chapters exclusively devoted to some of the most economically important bark beetle genera, such as Dendroctonus, Ips, Tomicus, Hypothenemus, and Scolytus Includes copious color illustrations and photographs that further enhance the content

Book Distribution of Bark Beetle Attacks on Ponderosa Pine Trees in Montana

Download or read book Distribution of Bark Beetle Attacks on Ponderosa Pine Trees in Montana written by Philip Cornwell Johnson and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The boles of 71 mature ponderosa pine trees killed by Dendroctonus brevicomis LeConte (Coleoptera: Scolytidae) were analyzed to determine the distribution of the attacks by endemic populations of this bark beetle and those of several phloem -feeding associates. The longitudinal -circumferential distribution of the attacks fitted dia- grammatically into four distinguishable bole infestation patterns. The characteristics of the patterns and similarities with comparable ‍?attacks of D. brevicomis in northeastern California are discussed.

Book Bark and Wood Boring Insects in Living Trees in Europe a Synthesis

Download or read book Bark and Wood Boring Insects in Living Trees in Europe a Synthesis written by François Lieutier and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-08-24 with total page 569 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the first time, a synthesis on the research work done in Europe on all Bark And Wood Boring Insects In Living Trees (BAWBILT) is presented. As final product of a four-year research project gathering together 100 scientists from 24 countries, the book is the fruit of a real collective synthesis in which all European specialists have participated. It reviews and comments on all the European literature, while considering the biological (trees, insects, associated organisms, and their relationships) and forest management aspects. However, although focused on the European forest, it also compares the available information and interpretations to those concerning similar species in other continents. It ends with propositions of research priorities for Europe. The book is directed to all scientists and students concerned with forest entomology and ecology, as well as to forest managers and all scientific public interested in forest biology.
