Book Horses Healing the Wounded Warrior

Download or read book Horses Healing the Wounded Warrior written by Rebecca R. Wara-Goss and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a major concern for military veterans in the United States and current research on women's experiences in the military and the effects of their postmilitary PTSD are limited. Currently, there are a variety of evidence-based and alternative treatment options for veterans with PTSD, and one alternative treatment option includes equine-facilitated psychotherapy (EFP). EFP is a form of animal-assisted therapy (AAT) that integrates the human–animal bond as part of treatment and recovery. The purpose of this exploratory study was to explore in-depth experiences of the horse–human relationship in EFP with female veterans to elucidate how the horse–human relationship may assist in reducing impacts of PTSD. The research question was, "What is the lived experience of EFP in female veterans with PTSD?" The research was designed as an exploratory qualitative inquiry study that utilized semi-structured interviews with 10 female veterans. The findings from this study included six theme groupings with a total of thirty-three themes found. The most significant themes common to five or more participants included: Emotional discomfort with the horse, Spiritual experience with the horse, Experience of safety with the horse, Visual contact with the horse, Emotional connection with the horse, Beneficial impact of therapy, Increased connection with others, Reduced anxiety, Reduced withdrawal, EFP advocacy for others, and Delayed awareness of PTSD. Through exploring the nature of the human–animal bond in EFP, this research revealed invaluable insights into the potential healing power of horses and alternative mental health treatment options and served to honor women's experiences in the military. In addition, this qualitative study provided an opportunity to gather rich detail and general information as to the effects of EFP for sufferers of PTSD.

However, researcher, professor, and horsewoman, Dr. Ellen Kaye Gehrke has created an extraordinary, non-pharmaceutical program to help minimize even the most debilitating PTSD symptoms: through heart-centered connection with horses. Based on her evidence-based research, Gehrke developed an equine therapy program, called HEART OF HORSEMANSHIP(c), at her ranch in Ramona, California, where veterans work with horses and learn how to - Reestablish trust - Stay present - Communicate with confidence - Find aliveness - Work as a team - Feel whole in their heartShe shares that program with you in Ride It Out, which details the course progression from meeting the horse for the first time, to making and building an authentic connection. The outcome leads participants to designing and confidently leading a more wholehearted life. Book Beyond Words the Healing Power of Horses

Download or read book Beyond Words the Healing Power of Horses written by Alita H. Buzel, PhD and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2016-05-06 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpts from Beyond Words: The Healing Power of Horses The space between words is where we live with horses. In the silence we are truly heard. ******* So much of our sadness, our discontent, our addictions and compulsions are driven by the emptiness we experience when, without being aware of it, we detach from our emotional selves. We often mistake this emptiness as boredom, anxiety, hunger, and/or loneliness. Horses, in their honesty and compassion, help us to reconnect to ourselves, to our humanness. ******* What I have come to believe is that no matter what orientation you bring to psychotherapy, or what equine certification you achieve, the one variable that has been shown to be critically important is the trusting, respectful, and compassionate relationship that develops between therapist and client; whether the therapist has two or four legs is irrelevant! ********** The goal of Beyond Words: The Healing Power of Horses is to connect the advances made in the treatment and understanding of mental health issues with the knowledge we have accrued through the years about the nature of horses. The key is to integrate the two professional worlds of equine specialists and psychotherapists, so that each can appreciate, communicate, and work together to further enhance the practice of Equine Experiential Psychotherapy.

After returning home from combat, however, his physical wounds and crippling post-traumatic stress disorder began to take their toll. He wondered if he would ever recover. Then Luis met Tuesday, a sensitive golden retriever trained to assist people with disabilities. Tuesday had lived among prisoners and at a home for troubled boys, and he found it difficult to trust in or connect with a human being–until Luis. Until Tuesday is the story of how two wounded warriors, who had given so much and suffered the consequences, found salvation in each other. It is a story about war and peace, injury and recovery, psychological wounds and spiritual restoration. But more than that, it is a story about the love between a man and dog, and how, together, they healed each other’s souls.

Book On the Back of a Horse

Download or read book On the Back of a Horse written by Claire Dorotik Ma and published by . This book was released on 2011-02 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Claire Dorotik grew up riding, training, and loving horses, and in many ways understood horses before she understood people. While at the time her equine companions provided her tremendous solace, it was not until she entered her graduate program for psychology, and suffered her own intense personal trauma that the amazing way in which horses heal people was actually realized. ON THE BACK OF A HORSE: Harnessing The Healing Power Of The Human Equine Bond is an entrance into the spiritual world of horses, the devastation of raw human trauma, and the equine facilitated psychotherapy that can help heal it. Using narrative interviews and case studies of equine experts and psychology researchers, the reader is given entrance into the world of equine facilitated psychotherapy, and in doing so, taken on an epic journey to discover how it is that these magical creatures understand so much more about human trauma than we ourselves do. Using dramatic scenes, ON THE BACK OF A HORSE, gives the reader an understanding of just how people experience trauma, and why. What also emerges is an understanding of what horses do that, in many ways, prevents them from experiencing trauma as people do. While human fallacies illuminate themselves, and the debilitating effects of trauma become evident, the reader is bolstered by examples of equine communication, bonding and emotional expression, providing a beautiful example of just how these amazing creatures can help people overcome trauma.
