Book excerpt: The second volume of "Horse Conformation: Principles of Form and Function", a definitive yet highly readable textbook and reference work. This volume covers detailed points of conformation located along the spine or axis of the body from head to tail:1. The loin coupling -- the most crucial area of the body in terms of weightbearing capability and the capacity for collection.2. The saddle-adapted back -- skeletal and muscular anatomy of the back, variations in conformation, and how to select and fit a saddle3. Raising the base of the neck -- The solution to the last great unsolved mystery of classical riding, one of the keys to complete collection, and the means by which the horse bridles properly and goes onto the bit. Conformation variations and biomechanical functioning of the lower part of the equine neck.4. The throatlatch and turnover -- conformation variations and biomechanical functioning of the upper part of the equine neck.5. The head -- skull structure that underpins head conformation; problems with "extreme" heads; conformation variations and biomechanical functioning of the horse's head.6. The teeth -- How good or bad teeth affect a horse's value, rideability and trainability; form and development of teeth; how teeth age and how to "age" a horse by looking at its teeth; teeth in foals and very old horses. This volume gives the reader the information necessary to assess athletic capability and select horses suitable to different riding or competitive disciplines. Numerous longstanding errors in the literature on horse conformation are debunked and replaced with correct information. Hundreds of examples featuring the world's largest collection of photographs of good horses owned by people of ordinary means. Detailed information of use to riders, trainers, farriers, equine dentists, massage practitioners, breeders, and veterinarians interested in lameness assessment and podiatry. Contains practice exercises, blank measurement forms, extensive bibliography and index. Author is longtime conformation analyst for EQUUS Magazine, formerly with the U.S. National Museum/Smithsonian Institution, and currently Research Associate at the University of Kansas Museum of Natural History.

Book Examining Evolutionary Trends in Equus and its Close Relatives from Five Continents

Download or read book Examining Evolutionary Trends in Equus and its Close Relatives from Five Continents written by Raymond Louis Bernor and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2020-03-12 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evolution of the horse has been an often-cited primary example of evolution, as well as one of the classic and important stories in paleontology for over a century and a half, due to their rich fossil record across 5 continents: North America, South America, Europe, Asia and Africa. The recent horse has served a profound role in human ancestry, including agriculture, commerce, sport, transport, warfare, and in prehistory, for the subsistence of humans. Many studies have examined the evolution of the Equidae and chronicled the striking changes in skulls, dentition, limbs, and body size which have long been perceived to be a response to environmental shifts through time. Most comprehensive studies heretofore have: (1) focused on the “Great Transformation”- changes that occurred in the early Miocene, (2) involved tracking long-term diversity or paleoecological trends on a single continent or within a geographical locality, or (3) concentrated on the 3-toed hipparions. The Plio–Pleistocene evolutionary stage of horse evolution is punctuated by the great climatic fluctuations of the Quaternary beginning 2.6 Ma which influenced Equus evolution, biogeographic dispersion and adaptation on a nearly global scale. The evolutionary biology of Equus evolution across its entire range remains relatively poorly understood and often highly controversial. Some of this lack of understanding is due to assumptions that have arisen because of the relatively derived craniodental and postcranial anatomy of Equus and its close relatives which has seemed to imply that that these forms occupied relatively homogenous and narrow dietary and locomotor niches - notions that have not been adequately addressed and rigorously tested. Other challenges have revolved around teasing apart environmentally-driven adaptation versus phylogenetically defined morphological change. Geochronologic age control of localities, geographic provinces and continents has improved, but in no way is absolute and can be reexamined in our proposed volume. Temporal resolution for paleodietary, paleohabitat and paleoecological interpretations are also challenging for understanding the evolution of Equus. Our proposed volume attempts to assemble a group of experts who will address multiple dimensions of Equus’ evolution in time and space.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Teeth of Mammalian Vertebrates presents a comprehensive survey of mammalian dentitions that is based on material gathered from museums and research workers from around the world. The teeth are major factors in the success of mammals, and knowledge of tooth form and function is essential in mammalian biology. Illustrated with high-quality color photographs of skulls and dentitions, together with X-rays, CT images and histology, this book reveals the tremendous variety of tooth form and structure in mammals. Written by two internationally-recognized experts in dental anatomy, the book provides an up-to-date account of how teeth are adapted to acquiring and processing food. With its companion volume, this book provides a complete survey of the teeth of vertebrates. It is the ideal resource for students and researchers in zoology, biology, anthropology, archaeology and dentistry. Provides a comprehensive account of mammalian dentitions, together with helpful reading lists Illustrated by 900 high-quality photographs, X-rays, CT scans and histological images from leading researchers and world class museum collection Depicts lateral and occlusal views of the skull and dentition, which conveys a much greater level of morphological detail than line drawings Contains clear-and-concise, up-to-date reviews of the structure and properties of dental tissues, especially the enamel and tooth support system, both of which play vital roles in the functioning of the mammalian dentition
