Book excerpt: Excerpt from Horse Raising in Colonial New England Horses were used on the sugar plantations to turn the rollers of the cane-crushing mills, to haul the cane from the fields, and to transport sugar and supplies. They were in demand for saddle purposes also. As far as New England was concerned, there is ample evidence that the exportation of horses to supply this need of the sugar islands formed a very important part of the commerce which was carried on between the two groups of British colonies in the New World, and that it was equally important in the trade which grew up between New England and the French West Indies when these islands also began the cultiva tion of sugar. The observations of contemporary writers, the reports of the various colonial governors to the Board of Trade in London, port records and various commercial statistics of the period which have been made available by modern research, and many other scattered sources of information, indicate that this was the case. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Horses and Horse Breeding Should I attempt to narrate one-half of what has been told me by such venerable horsemen, or to produce one - quarter of my correspondence with such persons, that matter would of itself make a book double the size of this; consequently, I con fine myself to the facts gathered as being of more importance to'my readers than to oblige them to wade through the waters that I have passed through in order to gather them. As to the illustrations contained herein, I have endeavored to give the true likeness of a few of the most noted horses mentioned, and that of myself, the author, thinking that these may be both interesting and instructive to my readers; but have refrained from filling up the book with illustrations for aign to the object of the work for the sake of making an unnecessarily large and high-priced book. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Horse in America: A Practical Treatise on the Various Types Common in the United States, With Something of Their History and Varying Characteristics There have been so many books written about horses that in offering a new one I feel that an ex planation, if not an apology, is due. And I am embarrassed as to how to frame the explanation without seeming to reflect on the books previous ly given to the public. Nothing could be further from my desire. Most of these previous books have been devoted to special kinds or types of horses without any effort to cover avery broad field. Some others have been frankly partizan with the avowed purpose of proving that this type or that was the only one that was worth serious con sideration. All these are interesting, but valuable chiefly to the careful student bent on going into the subject of horse breeding and horse training in all of its branches. To do this an ordinary reader. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gleason's Horse Book: The Only Authorized Work by America's King of Horse Tamers; Comprising, History, Breeding, Training, Breaking, Buying, Feeding, Grooming, Shoeing, Doctoring, Telling Age, and General Care of the Horse It is certain that at no period in the history Of this country has the horse stood so high in general estimation, or by the dis play of his various powers rendered himself an Object more worthy of our consideration. As greater attention is now paid to the breeding of horses, for the different purposes of the turf and the road, so should our anxiety for their education increase. The Object of this publication is to render as plain and familiar as possible a subject that has for a length of time remained in Obscurity. The want of a work advancing practical facts and illustrations has long been severely felt and acknowledged. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on Stable Management: In India and the Colonies The following notes on Stable Management were originally delivered in a lecture to the Officers, Non Commissioned Officers, and Troopers of the Punjab Light Horse, and as they were considered by the members of the corps to be useful, at their request I have put them on paper. There is no attempt at anything beyond the most elementary rudiments of horse-keeping in India, and all they are intended for is to give volunteers of mounted corps, who have not previously owned horses, some slight idea as to What should be done for the care of their chargers, and not leave them entirely in the hands of native syces and horse-keepers.
