Book Horse keeping for Amateurs

Download or read book Horse keeping for Amateurs written by Fox Russell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Horse-Keeping for Amateurs: A Practical Manual on the of Horses, for the Guidance of Those Who Keep Them for Their Personal Use The remarks contained in the chapter devoted to the sub ject of feeding must naturally be read by the light of each horse's individual temperament, the old adage of Where one would starve, the other grows fat, applying with peculiar force here. With some, the apparently trifling circumstance of their having a piece of rock-salt to lick will make all the difference between a healthy appetite and an utter dis inclination to feed. Horses are peculiarly dainty feeders, and I have known a horse suffer very severely from thirst before he would touch water offered him in a pail which had been fouled by a dog drinking out of it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Horse-Keeping for Amateurs: A Practical Manual on the of Horses, for the Guidance of Those Who Keep Them for Their Personal Use In the little volume now submitted to the public, I have endeavoured, without attempting to interfere with the legitimate functions of the veterinary surgeon - to whom recourse must always be had in serious cases - to indicate the course of treatment to be pursued in most of the ordinary ailments that horseflesh is heir to, and to offer such suggestions as may save the amateur horse-keeper the expense of a "doctor's bill" when the trouble which afflicts his charge is one of a common-place, or, at all events, of a not unusual description. I can, at least, claim that what I have written emanates strictly from a twenty years' practical - not theoretical - experience amongst all classes of horses, and especially with hunters and steeplechasers, which, by reason of their several vocations, are peculiarly liable to accident, if not to disease. In treatment of every description, it cannot be too strongly borne in mind that Nature's tendency is invariably to heal, and it is very often sufficient for man to prepare the conditions under which she can most favourably act. In the third chapter I have ventured to deprecate any non-professional interference in the case of fractures and dislocations, and this should be very earnestly insisted on. Book The Absolute Horse Care Manual

Download or read book The Absolute Horse Care Manual written by Dr John Tyler and published by . This book was released on 2020-02-21 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding and patience that you require for having the pony as a pet is not the end of caring about horses. Undivided heed and understanding the nature of the animal to provide it with its natural herd environment is the call of the hour to raise your animal properly. To the horse, the instinct is always instant action because for them action is survival. In a herd, the horses regularly take turns sleeping and warn the group during a predator attack where they take flight. From the very first day in the life of a foal, it starts with its learning journey imbibing all the qualities from its immediate environment. Very extensive knowledge about the animal is required to give it proper growth and development. Maintaining a subdued profile around the animal is essential. As it is in the wild, their survival depends on the early detection of that approaching predator the horses simply do not like undue attention and unnecessary blare. It is quite common that the mount can get disturbed by any unnecessary blast and cause injury to the people around it. A reassuring quiet voice is required while talking to your horse. While keeping a horse as a pet one should always remember that the animal will normally not relate to a human being but as is the case with most domestic animals an alliance often a very strong bond grows between the animal and its alternate provider given there is trust, fondness for compliance and a crave to desire and obey.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Horse Buying and Management: A Handbook for the Use of Amateurs The unsatisfactory condition which obtains in most cases where the purchase of a horse is contemplated - viz., the necessity of relying upon the advice of one's coachman or groom, or upon that of some other person, very possibly incompetent, and frequently not disinterested - suggests that a work which aims at enabling the amateur to buy his own horse, by instructing him what to look out for and what to avoid, would be really acceptable to a very wide public, and save many a man the annoyance of paying a long price for an inferior animal. The usual defects and weaknesses that horseflesh is heir to are carefully enumerated in this little book, and the reader is clearly taught where to look for them and how to detect them. In addition to this negative protection, the intending purchaser is shown what points he should particularly look for, according to the use to which the horse is to be put; and general directions are given for his guidance in deciding whether to buy or reject an animal that may appear to be a suitable one for his purposes. Practical hints and instruction on the proper management of the horse, in order to keep him in good health and working condition, complete a work which should prove of great assistance to the amateur horse - owner in the difficulties with which he has to contend. It is not within the scheme of this book to deal with diseases, but if such information be required, it will be found in Dalziel's "Diseases of Horses: Their Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment" (ls.), issued by the publisher of this little work.
