Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Horse Judging You learn only by thinking. Therefore, read your lesson slowly enough to think about what you read and try not to think of anything else. You cannot learn about a subject while thinking about other things. Think of the meaning of every word and every group of words. Sometimes you may need to read the text slowly several times in order to understand it and to remember the thought in it. This is what is meant by study. Begin with the first line on page 1 and study every part of the lesson in its regular order. Do not skip anything. If you come to a part that you cannot understand after careful study, mark it in some way and come back to it after you have studied parts beyond it. If it still seems puzzling, write to us about it on one of our Information Blanks and tell us just what you do not understand. Pay attention to words or groups of words printed in black-face type. They are important. Be sure that you know what they mean and that you understand what is said about them well enough to explain them to others. Rules are printed in italics; they, too, are important; you should learn to repeat them without looking at the hook. With rules are usually given Examples for Practice. Work all of these examples according to the rules, but do not send us your work if you are able to get the right answers. If you cannot get the correct answer to an example, send us all of your work on it so that we can find your mistakes. Use one of our Information Blanks. After you have finished studying part of a lesson, review that part; that is, study it again. Then go on with the next part. When you have finished studying an Instruction Paper, review all of it. Then answer the Examination Questions at the end of the Paper. It is not well to look at these questions until you have finished studying and reviewing the whole Paper. Answer the Examination Questions in the same order as they are given and number your answers to agree with the question numbers. Do not write the questions. If you cannot answer a question, write us about it on an Information Blank before you send in any of your answers. Remember that we are interested in your progress and that we will give you by correspondence all the special instruction on your Course that you may need to complete it. Remember, too, that you will get more good from your Course if you learn all that you can without asking for help. Why, then, it may be asked, illustrate it with portraits of horses and ponies of a class which must be beyond the means of the majority of readers. My answer is this: These pictures are object lessons, just as the prize-winner at the show is intended to be an object lesson to breeders. To train the eye to judge of horses none but the very best models should be set before it. The reader who will examine the illustrations will be able to see for himself what are the best models approved by experienced judges, and having educated his eye to these, be better quali fied to judge of what he wants when he comes to buy for himself. These pictures will also enable us to distinguish between mere prettiness and useful points. Then they will serve to bring before us the different types that are useful for the varying work to which a horse may be put, and this will steady our judgment when buying. If we wish for a general purpose horse, one that we can ride or. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. At the Pavilion he found the man he wanted to see, - a teacher in the Department, who was a horse specialist, and with whom he had become quite well acquainted during his winter's stay as a student. Introductions over, Jim explained the purpose of their trip. He wanted his people to see some first-class horses, especially drafty ones, and hoped that the instructor could show them some of the University stock. He also suggested that the differences in horses and in values be explained. This naturally re quired a trip to the stables and lots near by. A few students gathered around the party at the barn. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Points on Buying a Horse: Showing the Means by Which Unsoundness and Faults May Be Discovered; Also the Tricks and Methods Frequently Used to Effect Sales The horse is a noble and useful animal, yet very little is known about him, as regards good and bad points, by the average person. In consequence, when buying for the first time, the buyer must either enlist the services of a friend who is a judge of a horse, employ a veterinary surgeon, or blindly bid in a horse at auction on general appearances and trust to luck that he will turn out satisfactorily. Such persons seem to forget or entire ly disregard the fact that horses when offered for sale, especially by dealers, are brought to the best possible condition, perhaps having been doctored for weeks prior to sale, and possibly when they pass into their owners' hands will steadily decline and be almost useless. Acquired a fair amount of infor mation, on What has always been to me a favourite subject, I naturally wished to put it into practice. As I knew, judging, from my former ignorance, how much men in India stood in need Of in struction in horse-breaking, I determined to return to that country with the Object of teaching this art; so as to acquire the ex perience I needed, and to pay my expenses at the same time. I am glad to say that I was successful in both respects. During a two years' tour, I held classes at all the principal stations of the Empire - from Tricinopoly to Peshawur, and from Quetta to Mandalay - and, having met a very large number of vicious animals and fine horsemen, I obtained experience, and greatly added to my stock Of knowledge, which I shall now try to utilise for the benefit of my readers. As I proceeded through India, I felt the necessity of rejecting some methods I had formerly prized. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
