Book Horror and Mystery Photoplay Editions and Magazine Fictionizations

Download or read book Horror and Mystery Photoplay Editions and Magazine Fictionizations written by Thomas Mann and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2004-03-12 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Photplay editions, sometimes called movie editions, were inexpensive hardcover reprints of novels that had just been made into movies, and were illustrated with photographs of scenes from the movies. Although in most cases the movies were based on prior novels, occasionally the movies came first and the novels were created from scripts. This book is an annotated catalog of a large collection of over 500 horror and mystery photoplay editions and magazine fictionalizations that the author assembled over four decades. Photoplay editions and magazine fictionalizations that are not strictly in the horror or mystery genres are included if they are linked to films made by such stars as Lon Chaney, Boris Karloff, Bela Lugosi, and other genres performers. Mysteries are included if they feature a detective as the central character rather than simply involving crime as a plot element, and adventure, fantasy and science fiction works are included if they have an outre element. Some film noir books, and some associated with Alfred Hitchcock films, are also included. Most photoplay editions and magazine fictionalizations were published from the 1910s through the 1940s, and even though they are still published today, the cut-off date for inclusion in this book is 1970.

Thomas Ince: Hollywood's Independent Pioneer chronicles Ince's life from the stage to his sudden death as he was about to join forces with media tycoon William Randolph Hearst. Author Brian Taves explores Ince's impact on Hollywood's production system, the Western, his creation of the first American movies starring Asian performers, and his cinematic exploration of the status of women in society. Book Silent Film and the Formations of U S Literary Culture

Download or read book Silent Film and the Formations of U S Literary Culture written by Sarah Gleeson-White and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2024-04-30 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Silent Film and the Formations of U.S. Literary Culture: Literature in Motion argues that the emergence of motion pictures constituted a defining moment in U.S. literary history. Author Sarah Gleeson-White discovers what happened to literary culture-both popular and higher-brow—when inserted into the spectacular world of motion pictures during the early decades of the twentieth century. How did literary culture respond to, and how was it altered by, the development of motion pictures, literature's exemplar and rival in narrative realism and enthrallment? Gleeson-White draws on extensive archival film and literary materials, and unearths a range of collaborative, cross-media expressive and industrial practices to reveal the manifold ways in which early-twentieth-century literary culture sought both to harness and temper the reach of motion pictures.

Her male counterpart, however, has received much less critical attention despite his popularity in the wider culture. This collection of 11 essays examines the boy detective and his genre from a number of critical perspectives, addressing the issues of these young characters, heirs to the patriarchy yet still concerned with first crushes and soda shop romances. Series explored include the Hardy Boys, Tow Swift, the Three Investigators, Christopher Cool and Tim Murphy, as well as works by Astrid Lindgren, Mark Haddon and Joe Meno.
