Book Horizontal Scale Variations in Satellite Estimates of Weather Erosion Parameters for Reentry Systems

Download or read book Horizontal Scale Variations in Satellite Estimates of Weather Erosion Parameters for Reentry Systems written by James T. Bunting and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A weather erosion parameter known as the Environmental Severity Index (ESI) has been estimated using infrared and visible data from satellites. Cloud sampling requirements limited the original prediction equations to satellite data averaged over a horizontal scale of 70 km. Further experiments have demonstrated great utility for satellite estimates on a scale of 10 km and also revealed some systematic differences between the coarse and the fine scale estimates. The ESI averages 1 percent to 10 percent higher for the fine scale estimates and high values of ESI are observed more frequently. (Author).

Book Estimates from Satellites of Weather Erosion Parameters for Reentry Systems

Download or read book Estimates from Satellites of Weather Erosion Parameters for Reentry Systems written by John H. Conover and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Techniques to estimate reentry vehicle weather erosion parameters from satellite measurements are described. The techniques were developed over a period of three years. An empirical approach was followed with simultaneous measurements of clouds by aircraft and satellite sensors in a series of 41 cases covering a great range of cloud conditions. For each case the aircraft measurements of clouds supplemented by surface weather reports and radar pictures were converted to profiles of hydrometeor densities vs altitude. The erosion parameters predict the amount of material eroded from a nosetip and the range error of the reentry system due to erosion by ice and water particles in the atmosphere. The erosion parameters were related to infrared and visible satellite imagery data from NOAA ITOS satellites by means of non-linear equations. Equations were also developed to estimate total cloud mass and thickness from the same satellite data. Extensive applications and tests were made of the equations to estimate erosion parameters from satellite data.

Download or read book Solar and Space Physics written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2014-09-25 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2010, NASA and the National Science Foundation asked the National Research Council to assemble a committee of experts to develop an integrated national strategy that would guide agency investments in solar and space physics for the years 2013-2022. That strategy, the result of nearly 2 years of effort by the survey committee, which worked with more than 100 scientists and engineers on eight supporting study panels, is presented in the 2013 publication, Solar and Space Physics: A Science for a Technological Society. This booklet, designed to be accessible to a broader audience of policymakers and the interested public, summarizes the content of that report.

Book The Atmospheric Sciences

    Book Details:
  • Author : Board on Atmospheric Sciences and Climate
  • Publisher : National Academies Press

  • Pages : 424 pages

Download or read book The Atmospheric Sciences written by Board on Atmospheric Sciences and Climate and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1998-11-05 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Technology has propelled the atmospheric sciences from a fledgling discipline to a global enterprise. Findings in this field shape a broad spectrum of decisions--what to wear outdoors, whether aircraft should fly, how to deal with the issue of climate change, and more. This book presents a comprehensive assessment of the atmospheric sciences and offers a vision for the future and a range of recommendations for federal authorities, the scientific community, and education administrators. How does atmospheric science contribute to national well-being? In the context of this question, the panel identifies imperatives in scientific observation, recommends directions for modeling and forecasting research, and examines management issues, including the growing problem of weather data availability. Five subdisciplines--physics, chemistry, dynamics and weather forecasting, upper atmosphere and near-earth space physics, climate and climate change--and their status as the science enters the twenty-first century are examined in detail, including recommendations for research. This readable book will be of interest to public-sector policy framers and private-sector decisionmakers as well as researchers, educators, and students in the atmospheric sciences.

Book AU 18 Space Primer

  • ISBN : 9781478393559
  • Pages : 354 pages

Download or read book AU 18 Space Primer written by Air Command Staff College and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2012-08-01 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The US National Space Policy released by the president in 2006 states that the US government should "develop space professionals." As an integral part of that endeavor, "AU-18, Space Primer", provides to the joint war fighter an unclassified resource for understanding the capabilities, organizations, and operations of space forces. This primer is a useful tool both for individuals who are not "space aware"-unacquainted with space capabilities, organizations, and operations-and for those who are "space aware," especially individuals associated with the space community, but not familiar with space capabilities, organizations, and operations outside their particular areas of expertise. It is your guide and your invitation to all the excitement and opportunity of space. Last published in 1993, this updated version of the Space Primer has been made possible by combined efforts of the Air Command and Staff College's academic year 2008 "Jointspacemindedness" and "Operational Space" research seminars, as well as select members of the academic year 2009 "Advanced Space" research seminar. Book The International Space Station

Download or read book The International Space Station written by Robert C. Dempsey and published by Government Printing Office. This book was released on 2017 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Looks at the operations of the International Space Station from the perspective of the Houston flight control team, under the leadership of NASA's flight directors, who authored the book. The book provides insight into the vast amount of time and energy that these teams devote to the development, planning and integration of a mission before it is executed. The passion and attention to detail of the flight control team members, who are always ready to step up when things do not go well, is a hallmark of NASA human spaceflight operations. With tremendous support from the ISS program office and engineering community, the flight control team has made the International Space Station and the programs before it a success.

Book Where the Weather Meets the Road

Download or read book Where the Weather Meets the Road written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2004-03-31 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Weather has broad and significant effects on the roadway environment. Snow, rain, fog, ice, freezing rain, and other weather conditions can impair the ability of drivers to operate their vehicles safely, significantly reduce roadway capacity, and dramatically increase travel times. Multiple roadway activities, from roadway maintenance and construction to shipping, transit, and police operations, are directly affected by inclement weather. Some road weather information is available to users currently, however a disconnect remains between current research and operations, and additional research could yield important safety and economic improvements for roadway users. Meteorology, roadway technology, and vehicle systems have evolved to the point where users could be provided with better road weather information through modern information technologies. The combination of these technologies has the potential to significantly increase the efficiency of roadway operations, road capacity, and road safety. Where the Weather Meets the Road provides a roadmap for moving these concepts to reality.
