Book excerpt: The present publication is a continuation of two earlier series of chronicles, Philosophy in the Mid-Century (Firenze 1958/59) and Contemporary Philosophy (Firenze 1968), edited by Raymond KJibansky. As with the earlier series the present chronicles purport to give a survey of significant trends in contemporary philosophi cal discussion. The time space covered by the present series is (approximately) 1966-1978. The need for such surveys has, I believe, increased rather than decreased over the last years. The philosophical scene appears, for various reasons, more complex than ever before. The continuing process of specialization in most branches, the emergence of new schools of thought, particularly in philosophical logic and the philosophy of language, the convergence of interest (though not necessarily of opinion) of different traditions upon certain prob lems, and the increasing attention being paid to the history of philosophy in discussions of contemporary problems are the most important contributory factors. Surveys of the present kind are a valuable source of knowledge of this complexity and may as such be an assistance in renewing the understanding of one's own philosophical problems. The surveys, it is to be hoped, may also help to strengthen the Socratic element of modem philosophy, the dialogue or Kommu nikationsgemeinschajt. So far, four volumes have been prepared for the new series. Book excerpt: This book develops a morphodynamical approach to linguistic and sign structures as an integrated response to multilevel and interrelated problems in semiolinguistic research. More broadly, the content is linked to the realities of living speech through a connection (via the concept of diacriticity) with the Merleau-Pontian phenomenology, and beyond the formal determinations of a semiolinguistic system and its calculus. Such problems are mainly epistemological (concerning the nature and legitimate scope of semiolinguistic knowledge), empirical (concerning the observational device and the data’s composition), and theoretical (regarding the choice of a conceptual and formalized explicative frame). With regard to theory, the book introduces a morphodynamical architecture of linguistic signs and operations as a suitable mathematization of Saussurean theory. The Husserlian phenomenological signification of this formal apparatus is then established, and, from an empirical standpoint, its compatibility with neurobiological experimental results is discussed.

It might have appeared puzzling to the followers of our Analecta Husserliana why within the original horizon encircled by the research work of our International Society of Phenomenology and Literatur- whose research work is devised in a diametrically opposed direction to that of Roman Ingarden - there is steadfastly running through our discussions a line of Ingardenian reflection. The reason, as I have pointed out in the introduction to Ingardeniana II, expertly edited by Hans Rudnik, is clear: Ingarden's analysis of the intentional structures of works of art offers in its distinct and clear-cut forms an 'objective' correlate - as well as a point of reference - to the vast conundrum of issues concerning the creative endeavor of the writer, poet, artist in their struggle to endow life with its specifically human significance; a conundrum that in our research we are trying to disentangl- elucidating its mysterious ramifications, their sources and dynamic virtualities. As a matter of fact, Ingarden's thought, newly interpreted and originally expanded, occupies a legitimate place in the present collec tion. We find here, in the first place, an original expansion of Ingarden's aesthetic theory in the monograph of ladwiga Smith followed by the essays of Wadaw Osadnik, Yushiro Takei and Charles Rzepka.

La maniere dont Marsanes reprend ces traditions mythologiques permet de le situer au terme de l'evolution litteraire attestee par ces textes. Marsanes est l'un des plus mal preserves des cinquante-quatre traites de la bibliotheque de Nag Hammadi. L'intention du traite est d'etablir l'autorite de Marsanes comme prophete, voyant et chef spirituel de sa communaute, et de presenter un enseignement detaille sur les principes premiers de la theologie sethienne, notamment sur la nature et la destinee de l'ame. Ce qui est particulier a Marsanes, c'est son souci de reveler les 'appellations' correctes des anges et des dieux, ainsi que des puissances planetaires et cosmiques qui controlent la destinee de l'ame, d'ou un interet tres grand pour les categories grammaticales et astrologiques. D'autre part, le traite est parseme d'exhortations qui montrent bien la relation etablie par l'auteur entre la connaissance qu'il communique a ses auditeurs et leur acces au salut. Le traite Marsanes presente une dette tres grande envers la tradition grecque, qu'il s'agisse des theories grammaticales, des speculations astrologiques et arithmologiques ou de la philosophie. Sur ce dernier plan, Marsanes se revele etonnament proche de philosophes neoplatoniciens comme Jamblique et Theodore d'Asinee. Le present volume offre une introduction developpee au traite Marsanes, un texte copte nouvellement etabli, une traduction francaise, le premier commentaire a etre consacre a cet ouvrage, ainsi qu'un 'index verborum' complet.

Book excerpt: In today’s world, the boundaries within which Christian theologians operate are becoming ever more permeable, and Christian theology is increasingly influenced and challenged by multiple “outside” factors. In Western Europe, two such factors stand out in particular: the so-called “turn to religion” in continental philosophy and religious diversity. Theologians working with contemporary continental philosophers and theologians engaging the multireligious world tend to work quite separately from one another. The aim of the present book is therefore to initiate a conversation between these two groups of theologians. The question of truth was chosen because it is both a key issue in contemporary-philosophical debates (in the continental and analytic traditions) and one that arises in complex and problematic ways in the praxis of, and theoretical reflection on, interreligious dialogue. Some of the pressing questions that are addressed by the contributors to this volume are: What is truth? What is theological truth? How does the issue of truth arise from interreligious encounter? To what extent can or should the nature of truth be discussed explicitly during interreligious dialogue? Or should the question of truth be rather postponed in the interest of successful interreligious encounter? Is there a hermeneutical concept of truth and, if so, how can it be of help for theological reflection on the question of truth and on the role and place of truth in the context of dialogue between religions?
