Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The tragic death of Walpole's cat and the Thomas Gray poem written in her honor: the true story of what happened, and a look at the lively social and cultural scene in the eighteenth century. This delightful compendium focuses on one of the best-loved poems in the English language, but in the process it takes the reader on an engaging romp through the literary, intellectual, and cultural world of the eighteenth century. It brings alive a host of engaging characters: Horace Walpole himself (one of the great letter writers of all time, wit, raconteur; the curmudgeonly Dr. Johnson (who nevertheless had “a very fine cat indeed”) and his sometimes recalcitrant biographer James Boswell; and a cast of “handsome cats,” including Selima and Zama. In February 1747, Selima the tabby fell into a Chinese blue and white porcelain tub in Walpole’s house in London’s Mayfair and never returned to dry land. The poem by Thomas Gray, “Ode on the Death of a Favourite Cat, Drowned in a Tub of Gold-fishes,” was written as her mock epitaph. Here is the true history of the event, and a look at the sparkling social and cultural life of the period. It is beautifully illustrated with Richard Bentley’s original series of designs for the poem, William Blake’s wonderful watercolors of some fifty years later, and the unpublished color illustrations produced in the 1940s by the noted children’s book illustrator Kathleen Hale, of Orlando the Marmalade Cat fame.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Helen Golay and Olga Rutterschmidt looked like two normal elderly women who would attend services at the First Presbyterian Church in Hollywood. They would also volunteer and help the homeless, eager to give any of the down and out men a hello or an encouraging word. They went so far as to take two of them into one of the many apartments Helen Golay owned. They would house, feed and clothe them. But there was an ulterior motive to their benevolence. They would apply for numerous life insurances for the vagrants, sometimes up to a one million dollars. Then they would list themselves as the beneficiaries. After two years, the insurance company would be forced to pay out as the elderly women knew that was the time when the policy became uncontestable according to California law. Helen and Olga would sign the homeless men up for the life insurance and count the days after the policies became official. They would then ply the men with drugs and lay their unconscious bodies in a side alley, late at night. Then they would run over them with their car. Knowing that hit-and-run were not part of the connect the dot murder scenarios by law enforcement, the savvy senior citizens had gotten away with their crimes for years. Until they made one mistake...

Book Generic Enrichment in Vergil and Horace

Download or read book Generic Enrichment in Vergil and Horace written by S. J. Harrison and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2011-03-31 with total page 995 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: S. J. Harrison sets out to sketch one answer to a key question in Latin literary history: why did the period c.39-19 BC in Rome produce such a rich range of complex poetical texts, above all in the work of the famous poets Vergil and Horace? Harrison argues that one central aspect of this literary flourishing was the way in which different poetic genres or kinds (pastoral, epic, tragedy, etc.) interacted with each other and that that interaction itself was a prominent literary subject. He explores this issue closely through detailed analysis of passages of the two poets' works between these dates. Harrison opens with an outline of generic theory ancient and modern as a basis for his argument, suggesting how different poetic genres and their partial presence in each other can be detected in the Latin poetry of the first century BC.
