Book Journey into the Heart of God

Download or read book Journey into the Heart of God written by Philip H. Pfatteicher and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2013-09-23 with total page 1193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Journey into the Heart of God is a captivating exploration of the history and evolution of the Church Year: the cycle of seasons in the Christian tradition that begins with Advent and culminates with Easter and is marked by the celebrations of saints, feast days, and the reading of Scripture as appointed by the Church. Primarily through deft examination of the Western Church, Philip H. Pfatteicher reveals how the liturgical calendar has been transformed over thousands of years. It is a work of art--the collaborative achievement of generations of hands and minds. He shows how the church year dramatizes and grounds the strange complexity of the human experience and how it encourages honesty, humility, growth, and maturity in those who live by it. Pfatteicher also offers insight into the liturgical texts of the Eucharist, the less familiar Daily Office, and the people's theology voiced in hymns from a broad spectrum of ancient and modern traditions. It will be an indispensable resource for both clergy and laity in the liturgical denominations, including Catholicism, Lutheranism, and Anglicanism.

Book Revival The Liturgy of Funerary Offerings 1909

Download or read book Revival The Liturgy of Funerary Offerings 1909 written by E. A. WALLIS BUDGE and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-05-08 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book has text and analysis of a key Egyptian ritual which was performed when preparing the corpse of a pharaoh for mummification. This is known as the "Book of the Opening of the Mouth". The ritual consisted of offering a long sequence of foodstuffs, beverages, cosmetics and other consumables, along with a litany recited by the priests. This text was also painted on the walls of the royal tomb. This recitation may be tedious and repetitous, but there is a reason that I've gone to the trouble of creating an etext of this book. Although Budge doesn't emphasize this, this text comprises an important part of the 'Pyramid Texts', of which only portions are available in public domain English translation.

Download or read book The Liturgy of Creation written by Michael LeFebvre and published by InterVarsity Press. This book was released on 2019-08-06 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How were holidays chosen and taught in biblical Israel, and what did they have to do with the creation narrative? Michael LeFebvre considers the calendars of the Pentateuch, arguing that dates were added to Old Testament narratives not as journalistic details but to teach sacred rhythms of labor and worship. LeFebvre then applies this insight to the creation week, finding that the days of creation also serve a liturgical purpose.

Book Between Folk and Liturgy

Download or read book Between Folk and Liturgy written by Alan J. Fletcher and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 1997 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between Folk and Liturgy, the title of this collection, should not be understood to refer to some fixed point, some stable place between the two extremes of an illiterate and a literate culture. Rather, the title flags the wide and colourful spectrum of medieval dramatic possibility. Perhaps except one, none of the ten essays published here deal with a drama existing purely at either end of this scale. They add to our impression of the teaming fecundity and hybridism of early European drama, an impression that grows apace once we start to consider dramas situated Between Folk and Liturgy. The geographical terrain that the essays traverse ranges from the British Isles in the west to Poland in the east. The suppleness of the approaches taken here is the minimum critical requirement of anyone wanting to do justice to so complex and multifold a phenomenon as is early European drama.

Book Bible Missals and the Medieval Dominican Liturgy

Download or read book Bible Missals and the Medieval Dominican Liturgy written by Innocent Smith and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2023-11-06 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bible Missals are manuscripts that integrate liturgical prayers for the Mass with the scriptural texts of the Latin Vulgate. Long overlooked by scholars, Bible Missals offer important evidence for the development of the medieval liturgy and the liturgical use of scripture by medieval Christians. This monograph is the first comprehensive analysis of the codicology and contents of Bible Missals. Mostly produced in the first half of the 13th century by professional book makers in centers like Paris and Oxford, these hybrid manuscripts were customized for secular, monastic, and mendicant patrons. This monograph focuses on Dominican Bible Missals, the largest group within the repertoire, providing detailed codicological descriptions of each manuscript and analyzing their texts for the Order of Mass and selected liturgical formularies, including prayers for the feast of St. Dominic. For medieval Christians, the words and events of scripture were continually called to mind and reenacted in the sacramental rites of the Mass. Bible Missals provide important material evidence for this interplay between word and sacrament.
