Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Higher education in the twenty-first century should bring together freedom and knowledge with courage and hope. Why these four concepts? As Goodson argues in Strength of Mind, higher education in the twenty-first century offers preparation for ordinary life. Freedom and knowledge serve as the conditions for cultivating courage and hope within one’s ordinary life. More specifically, courage and hope ought to be understood as the virtues required for enjoying ordinary life. If college-educated citizens wish to hold onto the concepts of courage and hope, however, then both courage and hope need to be understood as intellectual virtues. As a moral virtue, courage has become outdated. As a theological virtue, hope violates the logic of the golden mean. Focusing on intellectual virtues also requires shifting from moral perfectionism to rational perfectionism. Rational perfectionism involves keeping impossible demands in view for oneself while constantly and continually striving for one’s “unattained but attainable self.” Goodson defends these arguments by learning from the bits of wisdom found within American Transcendentalism (Emerson, Cavell), German Idealism (Kant, Hegel), Jewish philosophy (Maimonides, Spinoza, Putnam), neo-pragmatism (Putnam, Rorty, West), post-modern theories about pedagogy (Nietzsche, Foucault, Rorty), and secular accounts of perfectionism (Murdoch, Cavell).

In epistolary form, its articles were written during the special time of her first year of training to become a general practitioner/family physician, including making the tough decision to give up hospital specialist training, "withdrawing" from fast-paced hospital work, transitioning to working from a metropolitan hospital to a rural community clinic, witnessing and getting used to a younger sibling's growing up, and being independent from a close and loving family. Some also feature a promotion of the author's new academic career at the start of the COVID 19 pandemic and how it was perceived. "If men like us don't pray, where will emerging generations get a window into the soul of a good man, an image of the kind of man they can aspire to be--or be with--when they grow up? If men don't pray, who will model for them the practices of soul care--of gratitude, confession, compassion, humility, petition, repentance, grief, faith, hope and love? If men don't pray, what will men become, and what will become of our world and our future?" --from the Introduction by Brian D. McLaren This collection celebrates the profound variety of ways men around the world have called out to the Divine--with words of joy, praise, gratitude, wonder, petition and even anger--from the ancient world up to our own day. The prayers come from a broad spectrum of spiritual traditions--both East and West--including Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism and more. Together they provide an eloquent expression of men's inner lives, and of the practical, mysterious, painful and joyous endeavor that prayer is. Men Pray will challenge your preconceived ideas about prayer. It will inspire you to explore new ways of prayerful expression and new possibilities for your own spiritual journey. Book The Courage to Hope

Download or read book The Courage to Hope written by Shirley Sherrod and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2012 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the summer of 2010, Shirley Sherrod was catapulted into a media storm that blew apart her life and her job doing what she'd done for decades: helping poor, hardworking people live the American dream. She was a lifelong activist who served as Georgia's first black director of rural development. A right-wing blogger, the now late Andrew Breitbart, disseminated a video clip of a speech Sherrod had given to the Georgia NAACP, intending to make her an example of "reverse racism." The right-wing media ramped up the outrage, and before Sherrod had a chance to defend herself, the Obama administration demanded her resignation. Then, after hearing from Sherrod herself and learning the entire truth of what she said in that speech, the administration tried to backtrack. As public officials and media professionals admitted to being duped and apologized for their rush to judgment, Sherrod found herself the subject of a teachable moment. The Courage to Hope addresses this regret-table episode in American politics, but it also tells Sherrod's own story of growing up on a farm in southwest Georgia during the final violent years of Jim Crow. As a child she dreamed of leaving the South, but when her father was murdered by a white neighbor who was never brought to justice, Sherrod made a vow to stay in Georgia and commit herself to the cause of truth and racial healing. With her husband, Charles, a legend in the civil rights movement, she has devoted her life to empowering poor people and rural communities--Americans who are most in need. The incident that brought Sherrod into the spotlight does not define her life and work, but it strengthens her commitment to stand against the politics of fear and have the courage to hope.

Book excerpt: Pillars of Life is inspired by the dynamism of my personal experiences of life and how every level of my engagement and interaction in my upbringing has been a building block for sustainable personal growth and development. It reflects an appreciation of the past and encourages the cultivation of wholesome relationships that lend support to your individual drives and aspirations. It outlines how every level of an individual's up bringing can be a positive factor and stepping-stones to future endeavors and accomplishment. It is a motivational literary work, backed by biblical truths and personal testimonies that identifies four life-involving areas that can be sources of strength and support as you make transitions through life; support you can depend on when 'the going gets tough, and the tough get going'. The four areas of support as prescribed in this book are Family, Community, Friends and Faith. Each brings specific sets of values that an individual can rely on and use to their advantage. The goal of this book for you is to learn the dynamics of balancing your life as best as you can on the pillar or pillars that provide the most support system for you. For those who have elements of each working in your favor, you are blessed, and I suggest you harness those elements so that you continue to experience the benefits of their support. For those who will experience defects in any one or more pillars, I encourage you keep hope alive; do not give up, but look to the other pillars and identify the one that offers the most opportunity for your growth. It is often said, "it is not how a man starts that matters, but rather how he ends." In other words, our destiny can not automatically be determined by where we begin but rather, making use and taking advantage of every opportunity to make the most of your time is such a way that after a while, we can look back and feel good about our past and path. It is written for all audiences - youth, young adults and adults alike. It cuts into your current situation no matter where you are in your life, and provides options for identifying and strengthening the basic support systems that works best for you.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Darkness will not last forever. Together we can climb toward the light. They were as troubled as we, our ancestors, those who came before us, and all for the very same reasons: fear of illness, a broken heart, fights in the family, the threat of another war. Corrupt politicians walked their stage, and natural disasters appeared without warning. And yet they came through, carrying us within them, through the grief and struggle, through the personal pain and the public chaos, finding their way with love and faith, not giving in to despair but walking upright until their last step was taken. My culture does not honor the ancestors as a quaint spirituality of the past but as a living source of strength for the present. They did it and so will we. In the same voice that has comforted and challenged countless readers through his daily social media posts, Choctaw elder and Episcopal priest Steven Charleston offers words of hard-won hope, rooted in daily conversations with the Spirit and steeped in Indigenous wisdom. Every day Charleston spends time in prayer. Every day he writes down what he hears from the Spirit. In Ladder to the Light he shares what he has heard with the rest of us and adds thoughtful reflection to help guide us to the light Native America knows something about cultivating resilience and resisting darkness. For all who yearn for hope, Ladder to the Light is a book of comfort, truth, and challenge in a time of anguish and fear.

Book Faith Courage Wisdom Strength and Hop

Download or read book Faith Courage Wisdom Strength and Hop written by Stacey Chillemi and published by Publishamerica Incorporated. This book was released on 2005-10 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We must view life as if each day is the first day of the rest of our lives. We should keep an outlook in our minds about life, as each day is the opportunity for a new start. We must learn to live each day to the fullest, and we can do that only if we learn to accept that we cannot change the past. We cannot stop a tragedy from entering our lives. We have to accept what has happened, accept the new person we have become by the tragedy that has entered our life and love ourselves no matter what. No one is perfect. The present is now, and we hold the key to the future. It is time to create the new you. Happiness and success come with persistence and hard work. You must have a goal and work hard. Follow your hearts to true happiness. You must have a destination, a goal and a plan. You are special. You can be anything you want to be. It is your turn to love yourself. The poems in this book will give you the faith, hope, courage and strength to be happy and love life. If you cannot find happiness in the present, you will never find it in the future. Those who find true happiness pursue the goal of achieving as much success and finding as much happiness as possible every day of their lives. Many people think that happiness lies in how much material wealth you accumulate. Nevertheless, we must find happiness within ourselves? not in the external world. Happiness comes from within and from making others happy. Each day, we have a new opportunity to find happiness; and unless we are able to learn to be happy on a day-to-day basis, we will probably never find true happiness. There are situations, when we find ourselves trapped, full of anger, not knowing where to turn or what to do. The anger of losing control of our lives. You may feel like life is meaningless, and happiness is no longer an option. My poems will show you otherwise. I will show you through my poetry that there is no reason to be angry. Love yourself as your loved ones love you. Life is meaningless unless you can love, be happy and bring your happiness to others. As you read my poetry, you will see a completely new meaning of life. In addition, faith will once again be a part of your life.
