Book Voices of Our Veterans

Download or read book Voices of Our Veterans written by Mr. Walter Raynes’s Eleventh Grade Language Arts Students and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2010-01-19 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Voices of Our Veterans captures the memories of twenty-seven war veterans from Mason County, West Virginia, as told to high school students, preserving their stories of heroism, perseverance, and sacrifice for the ages. This compilation of biographies was authored by Walter Rayness eleventh grade Language Arts students at Wahama High School during the spring semester of 2009. Wahama, a small rural school with an enrollment of approximately 430 students in grades seven through twelve, rests along the Ohio River in the area of Mason County known as the "Big Bend." Through their efforts and participation in this project, these twenty-four first-time published writers not only honed their skills in the areas of writing, technology, oral communication, and critical thinking, but they also gained a greater awareness and appreciation of the contributions and sacrifices of all veterans. During their interviews, these servicemen related their fears, their hardships, and their triumphs--some for the first time. Along the way, they shared a plethora of emotions as they led the students through their military journeys. We hope you enjoy reading about these everyday men who we consider our local heroes. Mr. Walter Raynes Now more than ever, stories like these must be toldand lessons learned lest we forget, lest we forget. What some of the youth of Wahama High School accomplished was they kept the library of knowledge of twenty-seven veterans from being lost to future generations. Medal of Honor winner Woody Williams

Download or read book Uncommon Valor written by Dwight Jon Zimmerman and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2010-09-14 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Uncommon Valor from Dwight Jon Zimmerman and John D. Gresham presents a fascinating look at six of our bravest soldiers and the highest military decoration awarded in this country. Since the Vietnam War ended in 1973, the Medal of Honor, our nation's highest award for valor, has been presented to only eight men for their actions "above and beyond the call of duty." Six of the eight were young men who had fought in the current war in Iraq, Afghanistan, or both. All of these medals were awarded posthumously, as all had made the choice to give their lives so that their comrades might live. Uncommon Valor answers the searing question of who these six young soldiers were, and dramatically details how they found themselves in life-or-death situations, and why they responded as they did. For the first time, this book also provides a comprehensive history of the Medal of Honor itself—one marred by controversies, scandals, and theft. Using an extraordinary range of sources, including interviews with family members and friends, teammates and superiors in the military, personal letters, blogs posted within hours of events, personal and official videos and newly declassified documents, Uncommon Valor is a compelling and important work that recounts incredible acts of heroism and lays bare the ultimate sacrifice of our bravest soldiers.

Book Testaments of Honour

Download or read book Testaments of Honour written by Blake Heathcote and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the tradition of Tom Brokaw's "The Greatest Generation" and the bestselling "Flags of Our Fathers," Blake Heathcote brings together stirring and fascinating first-hand accounts from the Canadian military personnel who fought in the Second World War. Each interview in "Testaments of Honour: Personal Histories of Canada's War Veterans" begins with the question: "Why did you go?" In answering this question, history comes alive in the words and memorabilia of the veterans themselves, and through then-and-now photographs. These stories are undeniably powerful: a bomber relives the terror of his night-blind raids and the controversy of some of his attacks; one prisoner of war describes the unlikely friendship that developed between a German soldier and two of his Canadian prisoners. In every case, veterans detail their war years not to entertain or remember, but to understand themselves and be understood by others. In the words of our veterans -- their memories and their unspoken courage -- we see a mirror of who we are as a nation. ""Canadian Veterans understand that life is a gift. They know this because they were given the chance to marry, to raise families, and build careers, when those who stood next to them in battle had these possibilities denied them. Our vets know what their lives cost and that to be Canadian means to have been given the boon of selfless determination. They also know that each of us is living on mortgaged time, because the men and women of their generation left their own lives to put their community and country first. We owe our veterans a debt. As you read these stories, look up from your own life and remember those who made it possible." -- From the Introduction to" Testaments of Honour

Book Un American

Download or read book Un American written by Erik Edstrom and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2020-05-19 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Eloquent, devastating . . . packed with gimlet-eyed analysis - cultural, economic, historical - of how American life came to look the way it does . . . Edstrom's keen observational powers encompass both the physical world and social nuance." -Los Angeles Review of Books A manifesto about America's unchallenged war machine, from an Afghanistan veteran and new kind of military hero. Before engaging in war, Erik Edstrom asks us to imagine three, rarely imagined scenarios: First, imagine your own death. Second, imagine war from “the other side.” Third: Imagine what might have been if the war had never been fought. Pursuing these realities through his own combat experience, Erik reaches the unavoidable conclusion about America at war. But that realization came too late-the damage had been done. Erik Edstrom grew up in suburban Massachusetts with an idealistic desire to make an impact, ultimately leading him to the gates of West Point. Five years later, he was deployed to Afghanistan as an infantry lieutenant. Throughout his military career, he confronted atrocities, buried his friends, wrestled with depression, and struggled with an understanding that the war he fought in, and the youth he traded to prepare for it, was in contribution to a bitter truth: The War on Terror is not just a tragedy, but a crime. The deeper tragedy is that our country lacks the courage and conviction to say so. Un-American is a hybrid of social commentary and memoir that exposes how blind support for war exacerbates the problems it's intended to resolve, devastates the people allegedly being helped, and diverts assets from far larger threats like climate change. Un-American is a revolutionary act, offering a blueprint for redressing America's relationship with patriotism, the military, and military spending.
