Download or read book The Honolulu Marathon written by Mark Hazard Osmun and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2006-05-01 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Honolulu Marathon. The third-largest marathon in the world. Over 30,000 runners in a single year. Over $100,000 paid to leading racers. But it didn't start out that way.In The Honolulu Marathon, Mark Hazard Osmun, recounts the origins of this amazing event and the motivations of the people who made it happen. From recording the promotional showmanship of the zealous Dr. Jack Scaff, to kidnapping world-class runners, to running in the race itself, Osmun became the principal chronicler of the marathon--an event that became the bellwether for the nation's subsequent "Running Boom."Originally published in 1979, and told in a fast-paced, engaging, and sometimes irreverent style, The Honolulu Marathon placed the event on the international stage and now gives us perspective on the colossus it has become. Now with new material, an author preface, and an annually updated Race Statistics section, The Honolulu Marathon is a must-read for everyone who has--or will--run the race.

Book The People s Race Inc

Download or read book The People s Race Inc written by Michael S. K. N. Tsai and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2016-11-30 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Honolulu Marathon debuted in 1973 as the shared vision of a maverick cardiologist bent on proving the benefit of long-distance running for cardiac patients and an impetuous mayor eager to prove Honolulu the equal of the top cities in the country. Over a span of forty-plus years, the race matured into one of the largest marathons in the world, a $100 million economic engine for its home state, and a launch pad for some of the most dominant long-distance runners in modern history. From its modest start as a community event for local amateurs, the race now regularly attracts 30,000 entrants—more than half from Japan—and boasts elite fields led by Kenyan and Ethiopian professional runners, each hoping to earn a share of a $150,000 prize purse. The People’s Race Inc. captures the personalities, politics, and power plays behind the burgeoning growth of the Honolulu Marathon and provides a unique lens for understanding the complex history of the sport itself. Drawn from revealing interviews with those closest to the event, as well as exhaustive research, journalist Michael Tsai presents an insider’s account of how organizers forged lucrative partnerships with foreign investors, helped initiate the age of African dominance of the marathon, and weathered some of the most bizarre challenges imaginable. The book also exposes the ways in which the marathon's expansive growth mirrored the explosive, at times bewildering, development of post-statehood Hawai‘i.

This book tells the story of the one hundred races in his first eighteen years of marathoning: his training, injuries, triumphs, and failures. He also includes running tips on everything from strength training to race recovery for those who want to start or are already running. This memoir is not just for runners, but for anyone who appreciates any grueling experience that transforms the body and mind. Book Distance Memories

Download or read book Distance Memories written by Scott Ludwig and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2013-04-30 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ive been around the block a few times. Over half a million times, actually. Assuming a block is approximately 100 yards long and 100 yards wide, running just over 130,000 lifetime miles equates to a few more than 500,000 times around the block. So yeah, Ive been around the block a few times. Ive had my share of ups and downs. The Boston Marathon, the Badwater Ultramarathon and having whatever it takes to run every single day since November 30, 1978 would fall into the former; an aging body, injuries, andwell, to be totally honest falling down while running much too often these days would fall into the latter. But its been a good, long run and I wouldnt have wanted it any other way. My wife Cindy believes the 2003 Badwater Ultramarathon signaled the beginning of my declining health and running ability. I beg to differ: I believe it was my (last place, and darn proud of it) finish in the 2006 Western States Endurance Run that catapulted me into the downside of my running career. However, I have no regrets. As I said earlier its been a good, long run and I wouldnt have wanted it any other way. Besides, if it had been any other way I wouldnt have had the many tales you will find in this book that you, quite frankly, could not possibly find anywhere else. These are my stories frommy experiencesand my perspectives on running as well as life. Theyre all absolutely true. Theyre all brutally honest. Theyre all from the heart. Most of all, theyre all mine. Scott Ludwig, 2013

Download or read book Someday Rich written by Timothy Noonan and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-12-06 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To truly be successful, today’s financial advisor must strike the right balance between effectively engaging with his or her clients and finding meaningful ways to maintain their financial security. By framing your mission in this way, you can help your clients clarify their vision, build a plan to achieve it, and manage that plan so they stay on track. Nobody understands this better than authors Timothy Noonan and Matt Smith—two seasoned financial professionals with over five decades of combined experience working in the asset management business. And now, in Someday Rich, they show financial advisors with clients who are rich, or have the opportunity to become rich, how to sustain a client’s desired lifestyle to, and through, retirement. Engaging and informative, Someday Rich provides the context, description, and implementation suggestions for the Personal Asset Liability Model—a process that will allow you to determine a client’s funded status relative to their future spending needs as well as develop and monitor their investment plan accordingly. While the methods in the Personal Asset Liability Model may not have been practically accessible to past advisors with a large number of clients, this model now brings together the technical methods to answer important client questions in a way that is feasible and includes the communication strategies that can make the delivery of the advice model more effective. Along the way, this reliable resource discusses the business of giving good advice and addresses how to incorporate these steps into a client engagement road map. Insights on various other issues associated with this discipline are also included, such as how to develop client trust and deliver personalized service when you have so many clients, and contingency risks—life, health, disability, and long-term care—that need to be considered in the financial planning process. And in later chapters, single-topic essays, contributed by experts in the financial planning field, cover issues ranging from target date funds and the investment aspects of longevity risk to modern portfolio decumulation. Building more valuable relationships with your clients is a difficult endeavor. But with Someday Rich, you’ll discover what it takes to achieve this goal as you put them on a path to a sustainable financial future.
