Book Homotopy Theory with Bornological Coarse Spaces

Download or read book Homotopy Theory with Bornological Coarse Spaces written by Ulrich Bunke and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-09-03 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Providing a new approach to assembly maps, this book develops the foundations of coarse homotopy using the language of infinity categories. It introduces the category of bornological coarse spaces and the notion of a coarse homology theory, and further constructs the universal coarse homology theory. Hybrid structures are introduced as a tool to connect large-scale with small-scale geometry, and are then employed to describe the coarse motives of bornological coarse spaces of finite asymptotic dimension. The remainder of the book is devoted to the construction of examples of coarse homology theories, including an account of the coarsification of locally finite homology theories and of coarse K-theory. Thereby it develops background material about locally finite homology theories and C*-categories. The book is intended for advanced graduate students and researchers who want to learn about the homotopy-theoretical aspects of large scale geometry via the theory of infinity categories.

Book A Course in Simple Homotopy Theory

Download or read book A Course in Simple Homotopy Theory written by M.M. Cohen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book grew out of courses which I taught at Cornell University and the University of Warwick during 1969 and 1970. I wrote it because of a strong belief that there should be readily available a semi-historical and geo metrically motivated exposition of J. H. C. Whitehead's beautiful theory of simple-homotopy types; that the best way to understand this theory is to know how and why it was built. This belief is buttressed by the fact that the major uses of, and advances in, the theory in recent times-for example, the s-cobordism theorem (discussed in §25), the use of the theory in surgery, its extension to non-compact complexes (discussed at the end of §6) and the proof of topological invariance (given in the Appendix)-have come from just such an understanding. A second reason for writing the book is pedagogical. This is an excellent subject for a topology student to "grow up" on. The interplay between geometry and algebra in topology, each enriching the other, is beautifully illustrated in simple-homotopy theory. The subject is accessible (as in the courses mentioned at the outset) to students who have had a good one semester course in algebraic topology. I have tried to write proofs which meet the needs of such students. (When a proof was omitted and left as an exercise, it was done with the welfare of the student in mind. He should do such exercises zealously.

Book Lectures on Homotopy Theory

Download or read book Lectures on Homotopy Theory written by R.A. Piccinini and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1992-01-21 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The central idea of the lecture course which gave birth to this book was to define the homotopy groups of a space and then give all the machinery needed to prove in detail that the nth homotopy group of the sphere Sn, for n greater than or equal to 1 is isomorphic to the group of the integers, that the lower homotopy groups of Sn are trivial and that the third homotopy group of S2 is also isomorphic to the group of the integers. All this was achieved by discussing H-spaces and CoH-spaces, fibrations and cofibrations (rather thoroughly), simplicial structures and the homotopy groups of maps.Later, the book was expanded to introduce CW-complexes and their homotopy groups, to construct a special class of CW-complexes (the Eilenberg-Mac Lane spaces) and to include a chapter devoted to the study of the action of the fundamental group on the higher homotopy groups and the study of fibrations in the context of a category in which the fibres are forced to live; the final material of that chapter is a comparison of various kinds of universal fibrations. Completing the book are two appendices on compactly generated spaces and the theory of colimits. The book does not require any prior knowledge of Algebraic Topology and only rudimentary concepts of Category Theory are necessary; however, the student is supposed to be well at ease with the main general theorems of Topology and have a reasonable mathematical maturity.

Book Homotopy Theory of Function Spaces and Related Topics

Download or read book Homotopy Theory of Function Spaces and Related Topics written by Yves Félix and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2010 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the Workshop on Homotopy Theory of Function Spaces and Related Topics, which was held at the Mathematisches Forschungsinstitut Oberwolfach, in Germany, from April 5-11, 2009. This volume contains fourteen original research articles covering a broad range of topics that include: localization and rational homotopy theory, evaluation subgroups, free loop spaces, Whitehead products, spaces of algebraic maps, gauge groups, loop groups, operads, and string topology. In addition to reporting on various topics in the area, this volume is supposed to facilitate the exchange of ideas within Homotopy Theory of Function Spaces, and promote cross-fertilization between Homotopy Theory of Function Spaces and other areas. With these latter aims in mind, this volume includes a survey article which, with its extensive bibliography, should help bring researchers and graduate students up to speed on activity in this field as well as a problems list, which is an expanded and edited version of problems discussed in sessions held at the conference. The problems list is intended to suggest directions for future work.

Book Differential Function Spectra the Differential Becker Gottlieb Transfer and Applications to Differential Algebraic K Theory

Download or read book Differential Function Spectra the Differential Becker Gottlieb Transfer and Applications to Differential Algebraic K Theory written by Ulrich Bunke and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2021-06-21 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We develop differential algebraic K-theory for rings of integers in number fields and we construct a cycle map from geometrized bundles of modules over such a ring to the differential algebraic K-theory. We also treat some of the foundational aspects of differential cohomology, including differential function spectra and the differential Becker-Gottlieb transfer. We then state a transfer index conjecture about the equality of the Becker-Gottlieb transfer and the analytic transfer defined by Lott. In support of this conjecture, we derive some non-trivial consequences which are provable by independent means.

Download or read book Infinite Homotopy Theory written by H-J. Baues and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2001-06-30 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with algebraic topology, homotopy theory and simple homotopy theory of infinite CW-complexes with ends. Contrary to most other works on these subjects, the current volume does not use inverse systems to treat these topics. Here, the homotopy theory is approached without the rather sophisticated notion of pro-category. Spaces with ends are studied only by using appropriate constructions such as spherical objects of CW-complexes in the category of spaces with ends, and all arguments refer directly to this category. In this way, infinite homotopy theory is presented as a natural extension of classical homotopy theory. In particular, this book introduces the construction of the proper groupoid of a space with ends and then the cohomology with local coefficients is defined by the enveloping ringoid of the proper fundamental groupoid. This volume will be of interest to researchers whose work involves algebraic topology, category theory, homological algebra, general topology, manifolds, and cell complexes.

Book Geometric Group Theory

Download or read book Geometric Group Theory written by Clara Löh and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-12-19 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inspired by classical geometry, geometric group theory has in turn provided a variety of applications to geometry, topology, group theory, number theory and graph theory. This carefully written textbook provides a rigorous introduction to this rapidly evolving field whose methods have proven to be powerful tools in neighbouring fields such as geometric topology. Geometric group theory is the study of finitely generated groups via the geometry of their associated Cayley graphs. It turns out that the essence of the geometry of such groups is captured in the key notion of quasi-isometry, a large-scale version of isometry whose invariants include growth types, curvature conditions, boundary constructions, and amenability. This book covers the foundations of quasi-geometry of groups at an advanced undergraduate level. The subject is illustrated by many elementary examples, outlooks on applications, as well as an extensive collection of exercises.

Book Simplicial Homotopy Theory

Download or read book Simplicial Homotopy Theory written by Paul G. Goerss and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the beginning of the modern era of algebraic topology, simplicial methods have been used systematically and effectively for both computation and basic theory. With the development of Quillen's concept of a closed model category and, in particular, a simplicial model category, this collection of methods has become the primary way to describe non-abelian homological algebra and to address homotopy-theoretical issues in a variety of fields, including algebraic K-theory. This book supplies a modern exposition of these ideas, emphasizing model category theoretical techniques. Discussed here are the homotopy theory of simplicial sets, and other basic topics such as simplicial groups, Postnikov towers, and bisimplicial sets. The more advanced material includes homotopy limits and colimits, localization with respect to a map and with respect to a homology theory, cosimplicial spaces, and homotopy coherence. Interspersed throughout are many results and ideas well-known to experts, but uncollected in the literature. Intended for second-year graduate students and beyond, this book introduces many of the basic tools of modern homotopy theory. An extensive background in topology is not assumed.

Book Homotopy Theory and Models

Download or read book Homotopy Theory and Models written by Marc Aubry and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In keeping with the general aim of the "D.M.V.-Seminar" series, this book is princi pally a report on a group of lectures held at Blaubeuren by Professors H. J. Baues, S. Halperin and J.-M. Lemaire, from October 30 to November 7, 1988. These lec tures were devoted to providing an introduction to the theory of models in algebraic homotopy. The three lecturers acted in concert to produce a coherent exposition of the theory. Commencing from a common starting point, each of them then proceeded naturally to his own subject of research. The reader who is already familiar with their scientific work will certainly give the lecturers their due. Having been asked by the speakers to take on the responsibility of writing down the notes, it seemed to me that the material elucidated in the short span of fifteen hours was too dense to appear, unedited, in book form. Some amplification was necessary. Of course I submitted to them the final version of this book, which received their approval. I thank them for this token of confidence. I am also grateful to all three for their help and advice in writing this book. I am particularly indebted to J.-M. Lemaire who was indeed very often consulted. For basic notions (in particular those concerning homotopy groups, CW complexes, (co)homology and homological algebra) the reader is advised to refer to the fundamental books written by E. H. Spanier [47], R. M. Switzer [49] and G. Whitehead [52].
