Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A couple of years ago a small group of people began discus sing the possibility of running an advanced summer school in the area of polymer blends. There had been a number of recent advan ces in this field, and given the considerable interest in these new polymeric materials, we thought such a meeting would be well received both by industry and academia. We wanted it to contain a wide range of background science and technology and also up to date recent advances in the field. It became clear as the discus sion progressed that the experts in the field were scattered over the length and breadth of Europe and North America and thus the cost of bringing them together for a summer school would necessi tate a high registration fee which would deter many of the research workers we wished to attract. The NATO Advanced Study Institute programme enables a subject to be covered in depth and by giving generous funds to cover lecturers' costs ensures that a wide spectrum of research workers can attend. We decided to apply to NATO and this book contains the results of our request. The ASI was funded under the 'Double-Jump' Programme which is not a new Olympic event but a way of supporting courses on sub jects of direct industrial interest. The Institute was also backed by donations from several companies and approximately half those attending were from industrial organisations.

Book Polymer Blends

Download or read book Polymer Blends written by Ezio Martuscelli and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multicomponent polymeric systems, or polymeric blends, have recently created considerable interest and they represent a new and important challenge for research. These systems have already become technologically important, but the prospects for their applications have by no means been exhausted. For thermodynamic reasons polymer blends do not usually form homogeneous mixtures but exhibit micro or macrophase separation. This incompatibility has some inherent advantages as varying the composition and the processing conditions, materials with different structures and morphologies can be obtained whose properties may be superior to those of one of the components e. g. high impact resistant plastics. Investigations of multicomponent polymer systems constitute a new branch of macromolecular science which now claims as much interest as the behaviour of dilute solutions, crystallization, statistics of chain~~ tacticity, and single crystal formation did a few years ago. The complexity of the problems related to control led preparation and properties studies of mUlticomponent polymer systems is such that it is often more practicable to conduct them on an international basis. The aim of the first Joint Italian-Polish Seminar on Multicomponent Polymer Systems was to discuss recent results obtained in that field in both countries. As the range of topics to be covered was fairly wide, we thought it advisable to invite scientists from other countries to share with us some aspects of their own studies.

Book Homogenizing Properties of Diblock Polymers in Blends of Corresponding Homopolymers

Download or read book Homogenizing Properties of Diblock Polymers in Blends of Corresponding Homopolymers written by Mark A. Hartney and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A series of blends was prepared form homopolymers and diblock coploymers of 1,2-polybutadiene and 1,4-polybutadiene. Samples were studied by dynamic mechanical analysis and transmission electron microscopy to determine whether a homogeneous or heterogeneous morphology existed. Although blends of the homopolymers exhibit phase separation, inclusion of an appropriate amount of a diblock polymer can lead to a homogeneous morphology. The materials examined covered a wide range of molecular weight, composition, and diblock copolymer fraction in the blend, enabling an experimental phase diagram to be determined. These findings are compared with current theories of phase behavior for blends of diblock copolymers and homopolymers. (Author).

Book Homogeneous and Heterogeneous Blends of Polybutadiene Polyisoprene and Corresponding Diblock Copolymers

Download or read book Homogeneous and Heterogeneous Blends of Polybutadiene Polyisoprene and Corresponding Diblock Copolymers written by R. E. Cohen and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The miscibility of homogeneous diblock copolymers of 1-4-polybutadiene and cis-1-4 polyisoprene with either or both of the corresponding linear homopolymers was found to depend upon the relative lengths of the block segments and upon the coordinates of the binary or ternary mixture on the appropriate triangular composition diagram. Evidence from a variety of experiments was used to draw overall conclusions regarding the location of the diblock in these blends and its influence on physical properties.

Book Characterization of Polymer Blends

Download or read book Characterization of Polymer Blends written by Sabu Thomas and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2015-02-09 with total page 972 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Filling the gap for a reference dedicated to the characterization of polymer blends and their micro and nano morphologies, this book provides comprehensive, systematic coverage in a one-stop, two-volume resource for all those working in the field. Leading researchers from industry and academia, as well as from government and private research institutions around the world summarize recent technical advances in chapters devoted to their individual contributions. In so doing, they examine a wide range of modern characterization techniques, from microscopy and spectroscopy to diffraction, thermal analysis, rheology, mechanical measurements and chromatography. These methods are compared with each other to assist in determining the best solution for both fundamental and applied problems, paying attention to the characterization of nanoscale miscibility and interfaces, both in blends involving copolymers and in immiscible blends. The thermodynamics, miscibility, phase separation, morphology and interfaces in polymer blends are also discussed in light of new insights involving the nanoscopic scale. Finally, the authors detail the processing-morphology-property relationships of polymer blends, as well as the influence of processing on the generation of micro and nano morphologies, and the dependence of these morphologies on the properties of blends. Hot topics such as compatibilization through nanoparticles, miscibility of new biopolymers and nanoscale investigations of interfaces in blends are also addressed. With its application-oriented approach, handpicked selection of topics and expert contributors, this is an outstanding survey for anyone involved in the field of polymer blends for advanced technologies.
